I love the way the morning light hits the red-tiled roofs as I head down toward the beach.

I have found some absolute gems over the years that aren't just your typical tourist spots.
These are the places where you can smell the beans roasting from a block away and see locals catching up on the morning news.

You cannot come to Puerto Vallarta and not try a real Café de Olla.
This place is a legend for a reason, and it is the most authentic experience you can have.

The staff are always so friendly and they really know their coffee.

They also have great options if you are vegan or gluten-free, which can be hard to find in some of the older spots.
It is tucked away just enough to feel like a secret, but it is right there in the heart of the neighborhood.
I always feel so much gratitude for the people who run these small shops because they put so much heart into it.

4. El Sofa Cafe
The name says it all: this place is all about comfort.
Located on Venustiano Carranza, it is a bit more laid back and artistic.

The walls are covered in local art, and it feels very much like a "local" spot.
I love their creative drink combinations; they aren't afraid to try new things with their espresso.
It is usually quiet enough that you can actually hear yourself think, or have a real conversation with a friend.
The owner is often there and is always happy to give you tips on the best hidden spots in the city.
I think this is such a great place to hide away if it happens to be a grey day.

It is just so cozy and welcoming.
5. Trovasi Cafe
Lastly, I have to mention Trovasi.
This one is a bit more modern but still feels very authentic to the current vibe of Puerto Vallarta.
They have a really epicurean menu, meaning the food is just as good as the coffee.
It is right in the center of Old Town and has a very sleek, clean design.
But even with the modern look, the service is warm and traditionally Mexican.
I had an iced coffee here last summer that was life-changing during a heatwave!
They use high-quality beans and you can really taste the difference in every cup.
It is a bit more upscale in its presentation, but the prices are still very reasonable for the quality you get.
I love stopping here on my way back up to Amapas.
The walk back uphill is always easier with a cold brew in hand!
Why Amapas is My Favorite
I know I mentioned it before, but I really can't stress enough how much I LOVE the Amapas area.
It gives you the best of both worlds because you are so close to the energy of Old Town, but you have your own quiet sanctuary to return to.
The views from the hills in Amapas are just incredible: you can see the whole bay!
It feels a bit more private and tucked away from the main noise of the bars.
Whenever friends ask me where to book, I always tell them Amapas is the absolute best place to rent.
It makes the whole vacation feel more peaceful.
And since the walk to all these amazing coffee shops is so short, you really aren't missing out on any of the action.
Puerto Vallarta is a place that rewards you for exploring on foot.
Every little alleyway in Old Town seems to have a story or a hidden mural.
