I have spent so much time exploring the winding cobblestone streets of Puerto Vallarta, and I still find something new every single time I step out of my door.
There is just something magical about this place that keeps me coming back for more.
If you are planning a trip, you probably already know about the famous Malecón and the big beaches, but there is so much more to see if you know where to look.
Most people stick to the main paths, but I want to share my personal favorites that are just a short walk from the best areas to stay.
When we talk about where to stay, I always tell my friends that Old Town and Zona Romantica are basically the same wonderful neighborhood, full of life and flavor.
But if you really want the absolute best experience, you have to look at the Amapas area.
Amapas is tucked away just slightly above the hustle and bustle, giving you the best views and a peaceful vibe while still being minutes away from the action.
It is, in my opinion, the best place to rent if you want a mix of quiet mornings and exciting nights.
1. Isla Cuale: The Jungle Heart of the City
My absolute favorite place to go when I need a break from the sun is Isla Cuale.
It is this tiny, lush island sitting right in the middle of the river that separates the downtown area from Old Town.
Walking onto the island feels like you have stepped into a secret tropical garden.
The canopy of trees is so thick that it stays much cooler here than on the beach, which is a total lifesaver on those hot afternoons.
I love wandering through the artisanal market stalls where local artists sell everything from hand-painted ceramics to intricate beadwork.
It is much more relaxed than the bigger markets, and I’ve found some of my favorite souvenirs here.
But best of all, if you keep walking toward the ocean end of the island, you’ll find quiet benches where you can just sit and watch the river meet the sea.

2. Conchas Chinas: The Secret Coves
If you are staying in Amapas, you are already halfway to one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico.
Most tourists crowd onto Los Muertos beach, but if you walk south just a little bit further, you hit Conchas Chinas.
It is a series of tiny, secluded coves with crystal-clear turquoise water and soft golden sand.
The rock formations create these natural tide pools that are just AMAZING for a quiet dip without the big waves.
I LOVE coming here in the early morning before anyone else arrives.
It feels like having your own private beach paradise.

But if you want to see the sunset like a local, you have to hike up to the Faro de Matamoros.
It is an old, defunct lighthouse tucked away on a steep street behind the main church.
It is a bit of a climb, but once you get to the top, the view of the entire Banderas Bay is simply breathtaking.
I usually bring a cold drink and just sit on the ledge watching the sky turn brilliant shades of pink and orange.
You can see the red-tiled roofs of Old Town stretching out below you and the mountains rising up behind.
It is a peaceful spot where you won't find huge crowds of tourists, just a few locals and savvy travelers.
If you get hungry after your hike, you can find the best places to eat right back down the hill in the heart of the neighborhood.
4. The Amapas Stairs: A Hidden Pathway
One of the coolest things about the Amapas area is the network of hidden stairs and pathways that cut through the jungle hillside.
There is a specific set of stairs that leads from the main road up into the higher parts of the neighborhood.
Walking these stairs feels like being in a botanical garden.
The locals take so much pride in their plants, and you’ll see massive ferns, blooming hibiscus, and vines that look like they belong in a movie.
I highly recommend taking a slow walk up here in the late afternoon.
You’ll catch glimpses of the ocean through the trees and see some of the most beautiful architecture in the city.

The streets are narrow, and the houses are built into the cliffs with incredible detail.
There is a famous pink bridge, the "Puente del Amor" (Bridge of Love), that connects two of the houses they owned.
It is such a romantic and quiet part of town that feels worlds away from the party scene.
I love just wandering these streets and looking at the intricate ironwork and old wooden doors.
It’s a great reminder of the old-world charm that Puerto Vallarta has managed to keep alive.
Why Amapas is the Best Choice
After exploring all these gems, it always comes back to where you rest your head at night.
While Old Town is great, Amapas is truly the BEST place to rent if you want that high-end, tropical feel.
You get the privacy, you get the elevation for the breezes, and you are still just a few minutes from the best tacos and bars.
I have stayed in many parts of the city, but the peace and beauty of the Amapas hillside are what I always miss the most.
If you are a solo traveler or a couple looking for something special, this is where you want to be.
The convenience of being able to walk down to the beach and then escape back up to your quiet sanctuary is something I highly recommend.
