I have been living and breathing the Puerto Vallarta life for a long time now.
If there is one thing I know better than anyone else, it is where to find the absolute best food in this city!
When you stay in our puerto vallarta rentals old town, you are literally steps away from a taco paradise.
Old Town, which everyone also calls the Zona Romantica, is the heart of the culinary scene here.
I LOVE walking out of a condo in the evening and smelling that smoky, savory aroma of al pastor meat wafting through the air!
It is truly the best part of being here.
If you are looking for the perfect home base for your food adventures, I always tell people that Amapas is the best place to rent.
It is just a tiny bit uphill, giving you amazing views, but it is still so close to all these taco stands we are about to talk about.
So, grab a napkin and let’s dive into the local secrets of Old Town street tacos.
The Legendary Pancho's Takos
You cannot talk about tacos in this neighborhood without mentioning Pancho’s Takos.
It is probably the most famous spot in the whole city, and for a very good reason!
They are located on Basilio Badillo, and you will almost always see a line of people waiting.
But don’t let the line scare you away!!
The wait is part of the experience, and I promise you it moves faster than you think.
Their al pastor is AMAZING.
They have this massive trompo (the vertical spit of meat) right at the front, and watching the chefs slice the meat with precision is like watching a dance.
They flick a piece of pineapple from the top of the spit and catch it right in the taco every single time!
The meat is juicy, smoky, and has that perfect touch of sweetness from the pineapple.
I highly recommend ordering at least three al pastor tacos to start.

Tacos El Cuñado: A Neighborhood Staple
If you want something that feels a bit more "local" and less "touristy," you have to go to Tacos El Cuñado.
They have been around since the late 80s, and they are located right near the pier on Francisca Rodriguez.
We always stop here after a long day at the beach.
It is a simple, honest taco stand that has been trusted by locals for decades.
They specialize in carne asada, and it is SOOO good.
The beef is grilled perfectly and served on fresh tortillas.
But best of all, they have a salsa bar that is out of this world!
You can load up your tacos with onions, cilantro, and various spicy salsas to your heart's content.
It is a great spot if you are a solo traveler because you can just grab a couple of tacos and stand on the sidewalk chatting with others.
If you are planning your next getaway, you should definitely check out the best zona romantica puerto vallarta rentals to be near all this action.
Seafood Delights at Mariscos Cisneros
Sometimes you want something a bit lighter, or maybe you just LOVE seafood.
That is when you head over to Mariscos Cisneros on Aguacate street.
While they have a sit-down restaurant, their street stand right outside is where the magic happens.
They make these incredible shrimp and octopus tacos that will change your life!
The shrimp are plump and fresh, usually sautéed with a bit of cheese: which we call a "quesataco."
The combination of melted cheese and fresh seafood is something you have to try to believe.
It is fresh, vibrant, and exactly what you want on a warm Puerto Vallarta afternoon.
They usually close up around 8:00 PM, so this is more of a lunch or early dinner spot.

The Morning Ritual: Taquería el Moreno
Now, if you are an early riser, you need to know about Taquería el Moreno.
They are located on the corner of Madero and Constitución.
They specialize in birria, which is a spicy, slow-cooked stewed meat.
In many parts of Mexico, birria is a breakfast food, and there is nothing better for a hangover or just a big day of exploring!
Their tortillas are a bit thicker than the usual ones, which helps hold all that delicious juice from the meat.
It is savory, rich, and incredibly satisfying.
Adding a little bit of lime and some of their spicy salsa really makes the flavors pop!
This is one of those best Saturday rituals that we always suggest to our guests.
Exploring the Streets of Old Town
Walking around Old Town and the Zona Romantica is an adventure in itself.
You never know what little hidden gem you might stumble upon.
There are so many vacation rentals for your 2026 trip that put you right in the middle of these cobblestone streets.
I love the feeling of the warm breeze and the sound of music coming from the nearby bars while I eat my tacos.
It is a very social atmosphere.
You will see families, couples, and groups of friends all gathered around these small metal carts.
It really brings the community together.

Why Amapas is My Favorite
I mentioned it before, but I really have to emphasize that Amapas is the place to be.
When we stay there, we feel like we have the best of both worlds.
You get the peace and quiet of a residential hillside area, but you are only a five-minute walk from the taco stands in Old Town.
The views of Banderas Bay from an Amapas balcony are simply unbeatable.
Imagine coming home after a taco crawl, sitting on your balcony with a cold drink, and watching the lights of the city.
It is pure magic!
Our condo rentals in that area are designed to make you feel right at home.
The interiors are bright and modern, usually with large windows to let in all that beautiful Mexican sunlight.

Tacos Sonorita Olas Altas
Another spot that has quickly become a favorite is Tacos Sonorita on Pino Suárez.
You will usually smell them before you see them!
The aroma of their al pastor cooking is enough to make anyone hungry.
They have a really cool, casual vibe and the service is always super friendly.
I am always so grateful for the hard-working staff at these stands who make such incredible food for us day and night.
They really take pride in what they do, and you can taste it in every bite.
Make sure to try their "volcanes" too: it’s like a taco but on a crispy, toasted tortilla with lots of melted cheese.
It is SOOO crunchy and delicious!
Tips for the Best Taco Experience
If you are new to the street food scene, here are a few tips to help you out.
First, don't be afraid of the salsas, but maybe start with a little bit to test the heat!
The green salsa is often made with avocado (tomatillo), and it’s usually milder, but sometimes it can surprise you.
Second, always carry some small pesos.
While some bigger places might take cards, most of these local street stands are cash only.
Third, look for where the locals are eating!
If a stand is busy with residents, you know the food is fresh and the quality is high.
Finally, just have fun with it!
Part of the joy of being on vacation is trying new things and stepping out of your comfort zone.
