I have worked remotely from Puerto Vallarta, and I have learned that a rainy day does not have to interrupt a good trip. In Amapas, the hills, green views, colorful streets, and nearby cafés make it easy to enjoy a calm workcation with your partner, even when the rain arrives.
This plan is for two adults who want focused work time, good food, and a little local culture without rushing from one activity to another.
Amapas is my favorite place to rent in Puerto Vallarta because it gives us a quieter home base while keeping Old Town and Zona Romantica close by. Old Town and Zona Romantica are the same area, so you can reach the cafés, galleries, restaurants, and covered walkways downhill from Amapas.
Set Up a Comfortable Work Base
The best rainy-day workcation starts with the right condo. We need reliable Wi-Fi, air conditioning, comfortable seating, a useful kitchen, and enough space for two people to work without feeling crowded.
A condo such as Hummingbird works well for this style of trip. The open layout gives us room to move between work, meals, and rest. A dedicated desk is especially helpful when one person needs to join a video call while the other answers emails at the dining table.

Before starting work, we usually prepare the space in a few simple steps:
- Charge both laptops, phones, and headphones.
- Test the Wi-Fi before an important meeting.
- Keep a backup hotspot or mobile data option available.
- Fill water bottles and make coffee before the first call.
- Agree on quiet hours for meetings.
- Use headphones if one person is listening to a presentation or recording.
- Keep towels near the entrance for wet shoes and umbrellas.
The condo’s large windows also make a difference. Even when the rain is heavy, we still get natural light and views of the green hillside. That feels much better than working in a dark room.
A Simple Two-Person Work Schedule
We like to divide the day into clear blocks. This keeps work manageable and leaves room for Puerto Vallarta between calls.
8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.: Coffee and Planning
Start slowly with coffee, fruit, or something easy from the kitchen. We review our calendars and decide which work must happen at home and which tasks can wait until we go out.
This is also a good time to check the weather radar. Rain in Puerto Vallarta can arrive quickly, so knowing when the heaviest showers are expected helps us plan walks and errands.
9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.: Focused Work
Use the first work block for meetings, writing, deadlines, and tasks that need concentration. Keep the background simple and avoid planning a long walk during this period.
If both people have calls, take turns using the quietest part of the condo. A bedroom, desk, or separate corner can work well for one person while the other works at the dining table.

12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.: Lunch at Home
A rainy day is a great time to use the kitchen. We keep lunch simple: tortillas, eggs, avocado, fresh fruit, rice, or vegetables from a nearby shop.
Cooking together gives us a real break from our screens. It also means we do not have to leave the condo during the heaviest part of the rain.
Open the windows only when the weather allows it, and keep electronics away from any area where water may blow inside. A few small habits help protect laptops and keep the work area comfortable.
1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.: Second Work Block
This is a good period for lighter tasks such as email, planning, editing, and administrative work. If one of us finishes early, that person can read, prepare dinner, or organize photos without interrupting the other.
We also set a clear end time. Without one, a workcation can turn into a regular workweek in a different location.
Take a Covered Break in Zona Romantica
When the rain softens, walk downhill from Amapas toward Zona Romantica. Wear shoes with good grip because the cobblestones and steps can become slippery.
For heavier rain, use a taxi or rideshare instead of walking the steep sections. Water can move quickly down the hillside, and it is better to arrive dry and comfortable.
Once you reach the lower streets, look for a café with indoor seating, power outlets, and enough space for two people. We usually order coffee or a snack, stay for a short break, and avoid taking over a table during the busiest period.
A covered café gives us a change of scenery without requiring a long outing. It is also a good place to read, plan the next day, or have a quiet conversation away from our screens.
Choose an Indoor Culture Plan
A rainy afternoon is perfect for exploring Puerto Vallarta’s creative side. Instead of trying to cover the whole city, choose one small area and stay flexible.
An indoor art walk through Zona Romantica and Centro is a strong option. Galleries near Basilio Badillo and the surrounding streets make it easy to step inside whenever the rain becomes heavier.
You can also browse covered artisan stalls near Isla Río Cuale, visit a museum, or stop at a chocolate workshop. A cooking class or tasting is another good choice for couples because it gives you something active to do together while staying indoors.

If you want a more independent plan, choose two or three galleries, add a long lunch, and keep the rest of the afternoon open. We enjoy this pace because it leaves room for unexpected discoveries without making the day feel like a checklist.
For a personal art route, use our guide to the hidden Old Town art walk. It explains how to look beyond the main streets and notice murals, tiled details, and local artwork tucked into quieter corners.
Return to Amapas for a Calm Evening
After exploring, head back to Amapas before the streets become too wet. The trip uphill is easier by taxi or rideshare, especially if the rain is still falling.
Back at the condo, change into dry clothes and make something warm in the kitchen. We like to keep the evening simple with music, a movie, or a shared meal at the dining table.
The best part of staying in Amapas is the contrast. We can reach the food and culture of Zona Romantica quickly, then return to a greener and quieter hillside setting. That balance helps us feel like we are actually on vacation, even when we spend part of the day working.
Practical Rainy-Day Tips for Two
A few details make this plan much easier:
- Pack a compact umbrella and quick-drying clothes.
- Bring shoes with firm tread rather than smooth soles.
- Keep a waterproof pouch for phones and charging cables.
- Download important work files before leaving home.
- Carry a small towel for wet bags and seats.
- Check whether a café has outlets before settling in.
- Group activities by neighborhood so you spend less time traveling in the rain.
- Keep your schedule flexible because showers can change quickly.
- Use taxis or rideshare for steep hills and longer trips.
- Tell your partner when you need uninterrupted focus time.
We also recommend confirming Wi-Fi and workspace details before arrival. A beautiful view is wonderful, but a practical desk and dependable connection matter more when work is part of the trip.
Why Amapas Works So Well for a Workcation
Amapas gives couples a useful mix of privacy, views, local character, and access to Old Town. We can work in a comfortable condo, walk downhill for coffee or art, and return to a peaceful space when the rain starts again.
That rhythm feels natural. We do not need to choose between being productive and enjoying Puerto Vallarta. We simply build the day around shorter work blocks, easy meals, covered activities, and a comfortable home base.
If you want more neighborhood context before booking, read our guide to the Amapas hillside and its location. It covers the hills, nearby streets, walking routes, and the relaxed feeling that makes this area special.
