I have spent a lot of time wandering the cobblestone streets of Old Town, and if there is one thing I have learned, it is that the best flavors usually come from a cart on a corner.
You do not need a fancy reservation or a white tablecloth to have the meal of your life here.
In fact, some of my favorite memories are standing on a sidewalk with a small plastic plate in my hand and a napkin that definitely was not big enough for the job.
If you are looking for the real soul of Puerto Vallarta, you have to look for the steam rising from a street stand.
Zona Romantica, or Old Town as we often call it, is packed with these hidden gems if you know where to look.
We always tell our friends that while the restaurants are great, the street food is where the magic happens.
The Legend of Taqueria El Cuñado
One of the first places I ever tried was Taqueria El Cuñado.
It is a tiny, family-run stand just a block or so away from the pier.
You can usually find it by the crowd of people standing around it at almost any hour of the night.
The family has been running this spot for decades, and you can really taste that history in every bite.
I LOVE their carne asada tacos because they have that perfect smoky char from the grill.
They also serve a killer al pastor, and watching them slice the pork right off the trompo is basically dinner and a show.
It is simple, it is fast, and it is SOOO delicious!
If you want a true local experience, grab a couple of tacos here and find a nearby bench to enjoy them.

The Magic of the Taqueria El Mereno Truck
If you find yourself near the corner of Madero and Constitución, you might see a bright taco truck parked there.
That is Taqueria El Mereno, and it is a absolute neighborhood favorite for a reason.
This is not a "hidden" spot in the sense that it is hard to find, but it is a place that tourists often walk right past on their way to more expensive spots.
That is a huge mistake!
The tacos here are some of the best I have ever had in the city.
I highly recommend trying the tripa if you are feeling adventurous, but their regular asada is just as AMAZING.
The best part about eating at a truck like this is the atmosphere.
You are right there in the middle of the action, surrounded by the sounds of the neighborhood.
It feels authentic because it is authentic.
Tacos Mi Esperanza: The Quiet Winner
Sometimes the best food stands are the ones that do not have a giant neon sign.
Tacos Mi Esperanza is a perfect example of this.
It is a bit more of an under-the-radar lunch stop, but the locals rave about it for good reason.
We found this place by following the delicious smell of grilled meat one afternoon.
The portions are generous and everything is made with so much care.
It is the kind of place where you feel like you are being fed by a friend.
If you are a solo traveller looking for a quick and friendly lunch, this is your spot.
We usually stop here after a morning of exploring the nearby markets.
If you want to know more about the local market scene, you should definitely check out our guide to the Emiliano Zapata market.
It is a great way to see where all these amazing ingredients come from!

Pancho’s Takos: The Famous Stand
Now, I know what you are thinking, Pancho’s Takos is not exactly "hidden."
It is probably the most famous taco stand in all of Puerto Vallarta.
But I had to include it because, despite the long lines, it really is that good.
They are known for their al pastor, which is marinated pork cooked on a vertical spit with a pineapple on top.
The flavor is a perfect balance of savory, sweet, and a little bit of spice.
Yes, you will likely have to wait in line, but the experience is part of the fun.
It is a great place to meet other travelers and chat about your favorite finds.
But if you want to skip the massive crowds and find more low-key options, we have a list of the best taco crawl in the neighborhood that you should see.
It covers some of the lesser-known spots that are just as tasty!
More Than Just Tacos
Street food in Zona Romantica is about more than just tacos, though they are certainly the stars.
As you wander around, keep an eye out for the smaller carts.
You can find delicious corn on the cob (elotes) or corn in a cup (esquites) covered in cream, cheese, and chili.
It is the ultimate salty snack for a walk through the neighborhood.
And you cannot forget the salsas!
Every stand has its own secret recipe, from the mild and creamy avocado salsa to the fiery habanero ones.

I always suggest trying a tiny bit before you pour it all over your food.
Some of them have a real kick!
But best of all is washing it all down with a fresh Agua Fresca.
Whether it is hibiscus (jamaica), tamarind, or horchata, these cold drinks are a lifesaver on a warm PV afternoon.
The horchata here is so creamy and full of cinnamon flavor: I LOVE it!

Finding Your Perfect Base
Exploring the food scene in Old Town is so much easier when you are staying right in the heart of the action.
While Zona Romantica is full of energy and great food, we always tell people that the best place to rent is actually in Amapas.
Amapas is just a short walk away, but it offers a bit more peace and quiet when you are ready to relax.
It has some of the most stunning views in the city and a really sophisticated vibe.
If you are looking for puerto vallarta condo rentals, Amapas is where you want to be.
The properties there, like Sueño or The Nest, are modern and beautiful.
They give you the perfect home base to explore all the street food stands in the area.
Plus, you can find some amazing condo and apartment rentals puerto vallarta that make your stay feel like a dream.
My Final Recommendation
Street food is not just about the meal; it is about the experience of being part of the city.
It is about the friendly "provecho" from a stranger and the smell of sizzling onions on the breeze.
I highly recommend taking at least one night of your trip to skip the sit-down restaurants.
Just wander through Old Town, look for where the locals are gathered, and try something new.
You might just find your new favorite meal at a stand you can’t even find on a map.
It is the best way to fall in love with the flavors of Mexico!
