When we first started looking for a place to stay in Puerto Vallarta, we were bombarded with images of modern glass towers and minimalist white boxes.
Honestly, if we wanted that, we could have just stayed in a downtown hotel in any big city.
We came here for the SOUL of Mexico!!
We wanted to wake up to the sight of hand-painted tiles and feel the cool, rustic texture of terracotta floors under our feet.
If you are a solo traveler or a couple looking for something that actually feels like you are IN Mexico, you have to look for Puerto Vallarta condos for rent by owner that prioritize charm over contemporary flash.
Trust me, there is a HUGE difference between a rental that is just a place to sleep and one that feels like a home.
Why Authentic Mexican Motifs Matter
When you walk into a condo that has those thick, dark wooden beams across the ceiling, it changes the whole vibe.
It feels grounded and sturdy.
We LOVE the way the light hits the rustic walls in the late afternoon.
In many of the places we recommend, you won't find those shiny, slippery marble floors that feel cold and impersonal.
Instead, you get the warmth of clay and the history that comes with traditional building materials.
It’s about those little details, like an arched doorway with a tiny cutout for a piece of local pottery.
These are the things that make your vacation photos look AMAZING and your stay feel memorable.

The Magic of Talavera Tiles
One of our favorite things to look for is a kitchen or bathroom covered in Talavera tiles.
Every single one of those tiles is a work of art, hand-painted with patterns in cobalt blue, sun-drenched yellow, and earthy greens.
It makes making your morning coffee feel like a special event!
We recently stayed in a place where the entire backsplash was a mosaic of these patterns.
It wasn’t perfect or "minimalist," and that’s exactly why it was so great.
It had character.
If you are looking for that same feeling, we highly recommend checking out some of the local Puerto Vallarta condo rentals that haven't been stripped of their personality by modern renovations.
Amapas: The Best Place to Stay
Now, let's talk about location.
A lot of people get confused between Old Town and the Zona Romantica.
Just so we are clear: they are the same place!
It’s the heart of the city where the cobblestones are the oldest and the restaurants are the best.
But if you want the absolute BEST experience, you have to look at Amapas.
Amapas is tucked just slightly up the hill from the main hustle of the Zona Romantica.
It’s quiet enough that you can hear the birds in the morning, but close enough that you can walk down to the beach in five minutes.
We think Amapas is the best place to rent because you get the views without the constant noise of the bars.

The architecture in Amapas is just STUNNING.
You’ll find winding cobblestone paths and villas with wrought iron balconies that look like they've been there for a hundred years.
It’s where you find the real rentals in Amapas that offer that authentic Mexican lifestyle we all crave.
Living Like a Local at Sueño
If you want a specific recommendation, we have to mention Sueño.
This place is a dream (hence the name!).
It is a one-bedroom apartment that actually lets you experience Puerto Vallarta like a local.
It’s tucked away in the hills, so you get these panoramic views of the bay and the mountains.
But best of all, it has that rustic charm we keep talking about.
Think tall glass windows that let the jungle air in, but with the solid, traditional feel of a real Mexican home.
It’s just 4 blocks from Los Muertos Beach, but it feels a world away from the tourists.

Finding Opportunity in the Hills
Another gem we found is called Opportunity.
What we LOVE about this place is the mural by Jose Baldi.
It’s not just a rental; it’s like staying inside a gallery.
It has these incredible views, and the bathroom even has two shower heads, talk about a nice touch!
It’s located on street level, which is super convenient, but it still maintains that quiet, hillside vibe.
We spent many mornings just sitting on the balcony with our coffee, listening to the sounds of the neighborhood.
Yes, you might hear a rooster or a dog barking occasionally, but that’s just part of the charm of living in a real neighborhood.
You can find more details about this apartments in Puerto Vallarta Old Town over at https://thepvgirl.com/opportunity/.
Avoiding the Modern Trap
It’s so easy to get sucked into booking a place because it has a "rooftop pool" or looks like a glass palace.
But after years of coming here, we’ve realized those places often lack soul.
They feel like they could be anywhere in the world.
When you choose a condo with terracotta floors and hand-crafted furniture, you are choosing an experience.
You are choosing to support the local aesthetic and the craftsmen who keep these traditions alive.
Look for the "Viarda style" homes.
These are the properties that use natural light, wooden beams, and artisan brickwork.
They don't need a modern facade to be beautiful.

Final Thoughts on Your Search
If you are planning your next trip, don't just look for the newest building on the block.
Look for the one with the most character.
Look for the owner who has kept the original Mexican motifs alive.
Whether you choose Sueño or Opportunity, or another one of the hidden gems in Amapas, make sure it feels authentic.
We SOOO recommend taking the time to look at the photos carefully.
Look for the textures.
Look for the colors.
Your vacation starts with the space you choose to call home for a week or two.
Make it count!
We are so grateful to the owners who keep these traditional styles alive for all of us to enjoy.
It makes such a huge difference in how you feel when you wake up in the morning.
