I have been coming to Puerto Vallarta for years, and every single time I step onto the cobblestones of Old Town, my heart just does a little happy dance.
There is something so special about this part of the city.
You might hear people call it Zona Romantica, but just so you know, they are talking about the exact same place!
It’s the soul of PV, and if you want to experience the real Mexico, this is where you need to be.

Getting Lost in the Best Way Possible
One of my absolute favorite things to do is just start walking with no real destination.
The streets in Old Town are narrow and winding, and they are filled with so much color it’s almost overwhelming in the best way!
I love looking at the rustic wooden doors and the way the terracotta roofs glow when the sun starts to set.
It feels like you’ve stepped back in time.
If you want to discover the real Puerto Vallarta, this is exactly the kind of walk that makes Old Town so memorable.
But if you really want to find the "secrets," you have to look a little closer at the details.
The Magic of the Mosaics
You have to check out Lázaro Cárdenas Park.
It used to be just a regular concrete square, but over the last few years, it has been transformed into this incredible explosion of art.
Local artists and volunteers have covered the benches, columns, and even the planters in these stunning, vibrantly patterned mosaic tiles.
Every time I sit there, I find a new detail in the tiles that I didn't see before.
It is the perfect spot to grab a taco from a nearby stand and just people-watch for an hour.
If you are a solo traveler, this is also a great place to meet locals and other travelers because everyone is so friendly and relaxed.
I SOOO LOVE the energy there on Saturday mornings when the market is in full swing!
Exploring the Heights of Gringo Gulch
If you are up for a little bit of a walk uphill, you have to find Gringo Gulch.
It’s tucked away just above the main part of the city and it is absolutely STUNNING.
The streets are even more narrow here, and the white walls of the houses are draped in the most AMAZING pink bougainvillea you have ever seen.
It feels so private and quiet compared to the busy beach area.
We spent an afternoon just wandering through these alleys, and the views of the red tile roofs stretching down to the ocean are just the best.
It really shows you the historic side of PV that a lot of tourists miss.
The Green Heart: Rio Cuale
Right in the middle of Old Town is the Cuale River, and there is an island in the middle of it that is like a little jungle oasis.
It’s much cooler under the big trees, and there are these rustic market stalls selling everything from hand-painted pottery to woven blankets.
We found some of our favorite souvenirs here last year!
There are also tiny little cafes where you can sit right by the water and listen to the river flow by.
It’s a great break from the heat of the afternoon sun.
But best of all, it connects Old Town to the rest of the city in such a beautiful, natural way.
Why Amapas is My Number One Choice
While we love exploring every inch of Old Town, I have to tell you that when it comes to actually staying here, Amapas is the best place to rent.
It’s right on the edge of the Romantic Zone, so you get all the action and the food, but it’s tucked just far enough away to be peaceful.
The architecture in Amapas is so charming: lots of stone work and traditional Mexican motifs.
Whenever friends ask me where to look for puerto vallarta rentals old town, I always point them toward Amapas and specifically suggest checking out Hummingbird.
Staying in Amapas really is a total game-changer for your vacation.
It feels more like a neighborhood and less like a tourist trap.
Authentic Vibes and Local Flavors
One of the secrets to having a great time in Old Town is to venture a few blocks away from the beach.
The closer you get to the mountains, the more authentic the food gets.
We found this tiny little taco stand on a corner three blocks up from the Malecon that had the best al pastor I’ve ever tasted in my life!

The family running it was so sweet, and we ended up going back three nights in a row.
That is the kind of experience you get when you stay in local neighborhoods.

Puerto Vallarta is such a welcoming place, but Old Town is where the magic really happens.
Don't be afraid to walk down that tiny alley or try the food at the stand with the long line of locals.
That’s where you find the real gems!
And remember, if you want the perfect balance of convenience and local charm, Amapas is absolutely the way to go.
