I have spent so much time walking the cobblestone streets of Puerto Vallarta. After many trips, I feel like I finally know where the real magic happens.
Most people stay right on the main boardwalk, the Malecón. It is beautiful, but there is so much more to see if you are willing to walk a little further.
I want to share my favorite hidden gems with you. These are the spots that make me fall in love with this city every single time I visit.
If you are looking for a real adventure, you have come to the right place!
The Tiny Cove of Colomitos
My absolute favorite "secret" beach is Colomitos. It is often called the smallest beach in Mexico, and it really feels like it.
To get there, you have to take a bus or a taxi south to a small fishing village called Boca de Tomatlán. From there, the real fun begins.
We usually hike the jungle trail that starts at the edge of the village. It is about a 30 to 40-minute walk through lush green trees and over small wooden bridges.
The hike is not too hard, but you will definitely sweat! The reward is AMAZING.

When you turn the last corner, you see this tiny emerald-green cove. The water is so clear that you can see fish swimming near the rocks.
I love to bring a small snorkel mask and just float around. It is peaceful and feels a world away from the busy city.
If you don't feel like hiking back, you can always catch a panga (water taxi) back to town. It is a great way to see the coastline from the water!
A View Worth the Climb: Cerro de la Cruz
If you want the BEST view of Banderas Bay, you have to climb to the Mirador Cerro de la Cruz. It is a steep walk, but I promise it is worth every step.
I usually start my walk from the streets behind the main church in the center of town. You will find a set of stairs that lead straight up the mountain.
It can be a bit of a workout, especially in the afternoon heat. I highly recommend going just before sunset.

Once you reach the top, the whole city opens up below you. You can see the red-tile roofs, the blue ocean, and the mountains stretching out into the distance.
I love sitting up there and watching the sun dip below the horizon. The colors of the sky are always SOOO beautiful.
It is a great spot for photos, and it is completely free to visit!
Walking Through History in Gringo Gulch
Many people skip the hills behind the church, but that is where you find the historic neighborhood of Gringo Gulch.
This area is famous because it is where Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton lived. Their houses are still there, connected by a famous pink bridge.
I love wandering through these quiet streets. The houses are covered in bright flowers and have beautiful wooden doors.
It feels very old-school and romantic. You can learn more about how to find spots like this in our guide on local secrets exploring the real puerto vallarta.
It is much quieter than the beach, and you can really feel the history of the city here.
Why Amapas is My Favorite Neighborhood
When it comes to staying in Puerto Vallarta, I always tell my friends to look at Amapas. It is the area right next to the Zona Romantica.
In my opinion, Amapas is the best place to rent a condo. It is close enough to walk to all the restaurants and bars, but it is much quieter and feels more private.
The hills in Amapas give you incredible views of the ocean. Most of the condos here are modern and very comfortable.

If you are looking for a great place to stay, you should check out these puerto vallarta rentals old town.
They are in a perfect location for exploring all the hidden gems I am talking about. We LOVE the vibe of this neighborhood!
The streets are safe, the neighbors are friendly, and you are just a short walk away from the beach. It really is the best of both worlds.
Tasting the Real Vallarta at Local Markets
If you want to eat like a local, you have to leave the tourist restaurants and head to the markets.
The Mercado Municipal near the Río Cuale is a great place to start. On the second floor, there are many small food stalls called "fondas."
They serve simple, delicious Mexican food like stews, fresh fish, and handmade tortillas. It is very affordable and the flavors are incredible!

I also love visiting the neighborhood of Versalles. It is a bit inland, but it has become a huge foodie spot for locals.
You can find everything from fancy bistros to tiny taco stands. If you see a place with a long line of locals, that is where you should eat!

The Quiet Coves of Conchas Chinas
Just south of the main beach in town is an area called Conchas Chinas. It is often called the "Beverly Hills" of Puerto Vallarta.
The beaches here are different because they have many rock formations. At low tide, these rocks create natural tide pools.
I love sitting in the calm water of these pools. It is like having your own natural bathtub right on the edge of the ocean!
It is very romantic and usually much less crowded than the main beach. If you want a peaceful afternoon, this is the place to go.
If you want to stay in this beautiful area, you can find some amazing zona romantica puerto vallarta rentals nearby.
The views from the condos in this part of town are absolutely breathtaking.
My Best Tips for Your Visit
Puerto Vallarta is a very safe and welcoming city, but a few tips can make your trip even better.
First, don't be afraid to use the local buses. They are very cheap and go almost everywhere. It is a fun way to see the city like a local!
Second, always carry a little bit of cash (pesos). While many places take cards, the small taco stands and markets usually only take cash.
Third, learn a few basic phrases in Spanish. Even a simple "Gracias" or "Por favor" goes a long way with the locals. They really appreciate the effort!
Lastly, be sure to walk as much as you can. You find the best secrets when you are just wandering with no plan.
Final Thoughts
Puerto Vallarta is so much more than just a beach destination. It is a city full of heart, history, and hidden treasures.
Whether you are hiking to a secret beach or eating tacos on a street corner, I know you will have an AMAZING time here.
I highly recommend visiting these spots on your next trip. You won't regret it!
