I have spent so many months exploring every corner of Puerto Vallarta that I feel like I could walk these cobblestone streets with my eyes closed.
When you are planning a trip here, the biggest decision you have to make isn't where to eat (though that is a close second). It is where you are going to lay your head at night.
Finding the right place to stay can totally change the vibe of your vacation.
If you choose a spot that is too far away, you spend all your time in taxis. If you choose a spot that is too loud, you might not get that relaxing sleep you deserve.
I want to help you skip the trial and error that I went through when I first moved here.
We have learned that the neighborhood you pick is the most important part of your journey.
Why Location Is Everything
When I first arrived in Puerto Vallarta, I was overwhelmed by all the different zones.
There is the Hotel Zone, Marina Vallarta, and the North Shore. But if you want a real, soulful experience, you want to stay in the heart of it all.
For me, that means staying where the history is.
Old Town and Zona Romantica are actually the same place, and this is where most people want to be.
It is the part of town with the iconic church, the best street tacos, and the most character.
However, within this area, there are different "feels" depending on which street you turn down.
I always tell my friends that if they want to be close to the action but away from the noise, they need to look just a little bit further south.
The Magic of Amapas
If you are looking for the absolute best place to rent, I have to tell you about Amapas.
I LOVE this neighborhood. It is tucked right into the hillside, just south of the main bustle of Old Town.
Amapas gives you the most AMAZING views of Banderas Bay because you are up high enough to see over the rooftops.
But best of all, you are still only a five or ten-minute walk from the beach and the restaurants.
It feels like a quiet escape from the world.
When we stay in Amapas, we feel like we have found a hidden corner of paradise that most tourists just drive past.
The buildings here are modern and sleek, offering all the comforts you need to feel at home.
If you are a solo traveler or a couple looking for something special, Amapas is highly recommended for its peace and stunning scenery.

Old Town Charms
Now, if you prefer being right in the middle of the energy, Old Town is where you belong.
I love waking up and hearing the sound of the city coming to life.
You can walk out your front door and be at a coffee shop or a fruit stand in thirty seconds.
The architecture in this part of town is so beautiful with its red-tiled roofs and white-washed walls.
It is vibrant, colorful, and full of life every single day.
We find that staying in Old Town is perfect for people who want to be able to walk everywhere without ever needing a car.
Everything you could possibly need is right there.
But remember, Old Town and Zona Romantica are the same neighborhood, so don't get confused if you see both names used!
What to Look for in a Condo
When I am browsing for puerto vallarta vacation condos, I look for a few specific things to make sure the stay is perfect.
First, I always check for air conditioning in the bedrooms. PV can get very warm, and having a cool place to sleep is essential.
Second, I look for a modern kitchen. Even if you plan on eating out for every meal, having a nice place to make coffee and store cold drinks is a game changer.
I really prefer the minimalist, modern style for interiors.
It feels cleaner, more open, and much more relaxing when the sun is shining outside.
We also look for properties that have large windows or sliding glass doors.
There is nothing like letting the ocean breeze flow through your living room while you relax on the sofa.
If you are interested in seeing some of these spots, you should check out these Puerto Vallarta condos for rent by owner to find a more personal touch.

Making the Most of Your Space
One of the reasons I prefer staying in a condo over a hotel is the space.
When you have a whole apartment, you can actually unpack and feel like you live here.
I love having a dining table where I can sit and plan my day.
Maybe I will spend the morning looking for authentic local secrets to find a beach that isn't on the maps.
Or maybe I need to get a little bit of work done before heading to the beach.
Puerto Vallarta has become a huge digital nomad home base lately, and I totally understand why.
The internet is fast, the coffee is great, and the views are unbeatable.
Having a dedicated space to relax or work makes a long-term stay so much more comfortable.
The Importance of a Balcony
In my opinion, a condo without a balcony isn't really a vacation rental.
I spend about 50% of my time at home sitting outside.
Whether it is watching the sunset or just listening to the birds in the morning, a balcony is a must-have.
In Amapas, the balconies are SOOO beautiful.
You can see the whole bay laid out in front of you.
I love watching the boats come into the harbor at the end of the day.
It is the perfect place to sit with a book and just breathe in the salty air.
When you are looking at rentals, make sure you see photos of the view from the actual unit.
It makes a huge difference in your daily experience.

Safety and Comfort
People often ask me if staying in a rental is safe.
I can tell you from my experience that I have always felt incredibly safe here.
Most of the modern condo buildings have 24-hour security and gated entries.
The neighborhoods of Amapas and Old Town are very friendly and community-oriented.
You will see neighbors waving to each other and locals walking their dogs at all hours.
We always feel welcomed whenever we arrive at a new property.
The hosts here are usually very helpful and will give you their personal recommendations for the best shops and services nearby.
It is that local connection that makes staying in a rental so much better than a standard hotel room.
Finishing Touches
When you are choosing your home base, think about what kind of energy you want for your trip.
Do you want the excitement of the city streets? Then stay in Old Town.
Do you want the quiet, elevated beauty of the hills? Then Amapas is definitely for you.
I have stayed in both, and while I love them both, Amapas is my personal favorite for a truly relaxing stay.
There is just something about being slightly removed from the noise that makes the vacation feel more special.
Whatever you choose, you are going to LOVE Puerto Vallarta.
It is a place that stays in your heart long after you leave.
I am so grateful that I get to share my experiences with you and help you find your perfect spot.

Final Recommendation
If you are planning your first trip or your tenth, I highly recommend looking at the Amapas area for your next stay.
It offers the best balance of views, comfort, and location.
Take your time looking through photos and find a place that feels right for you.
We hope you have an AMAZING time exploring our favorite city in Mexico!
