I have spent so much time wandering the cobblestone streets of this beautiful city, and every single time I visit, I find something new. Most people stick to the main boardwalk or the most famous beaches, but there is an entire world of "secret" spots that most tourists never even hear about.
If you are a solo traveler or a couple looking for something a bit more authentic, you are going to LOVE these hidden gems. I want to share my personal favorites with you so you can experience the real magic of Vallarta.
We honestly believe that the best way to see the city is to live like a local. That starts with finding the right place to stay. While everyone talks about the Malecon, we think Amapas is actually the best place to rent. It is close enough to the action of Old Town but feels like a private jungle escape!
The Jungle Secret: Colomitos Beach
If you want to feel like you’ve discovered a private island, you have to go to Colomitos. It is tucked away in a tiny cove south of the city. Most people take a water taxi, but I highly recommend doing the hike from Boca de Tomatlan.
The trail takes you through the lush jungle and over rocky cliffs. When you finally round the corner and see that tiny strip of sand with crystal clear water, it is absolutely AMAZING!!! It’s the smallest beach in Mexico, and it feels like a total dream.
I usually pack a light lunch and some water because there are no big restaurants there, just one small spot that isn't always open. It is the perfect place to disconnect and just enjoy the sound of the waves.
If you are planning to spend a few weeks exploring spots like this, you should look to rent apartments in puerto vallarta so you have a comfortable home base to return to after a long day of hiking.
Authentic Living in Old Town
Old Town (which is the same place as Zona Romantica, by the way!) is full of hidden courtyards and tiny galleries. I love just getting lost in the backstreets away from the ocean.
You will find buildings painted in the most vibrant oranges and blues. I recently stayed in a place that featured authentic Mexican motifs like hand-painted tiles and carved wood furniture. It really makes a difference when your rental feels like a part of the culture.
Walking through these streets in the morning when the locals are opening their shops is one of my favorite things to do. The smell of fresh tortillas is everywhere!

The Best-Kept Relaxation Secret: Nuevo Ixtlan
Okay, this one is a bit of a drive, but it is SOOO worth it! About an hour and a half outside of the city center, hidden deep in the mountains, are the Nuevo Ixtlan hot springs.
Imagine 20 different stone pools filled with natural thermal water, all shaded by massive jungle trees. It is quiet, peaceful, and almost nobody goes there on weekdays. We went last month and had the entire place to ourselves for hours!
It is the ultimate way to reset your energy. Just you, the birds, and the warm water. It is honestly one of the best secrets I have ever discovered here.
Living the Nomad Life
I see more and more people moving here for a few months at a time. The puerto vallarta digital nomad lifestyle is so popular because you can work in the morning and be on a hidden beach by the afternoon.
Finding a condo that has a great kitchen and a nice view makes all the difference. I love having a modern space where I can cook local ingredients I find at the market.
When you have a kitchen like this, you start to appreciate the local produce so much more. The mangoes and avocados here are the BEST in the world!
Where to Eat Like a Local
Forget the fancy places on the main strip. If you want the real deal, head to the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood. It’s just north of downtown and it’s where the locals actually hang out.
Look for the small taco stands with the plastic chairs. If there is a line of locals, you know it’s good! I found a spot that serves the most incredible al pastor tacos I have ever had in my life.
The atmosphere is so casual and friendly. You might end up sharing a table with a local family and learning about even more secret spots! I am so grateful for the kindness people show here.
My Final Recommendation
If you are coming to PV, please step outside the tourist bubble. Go to the hot springs, hike to Colomitos, and definitely spend time in the Amapas area.
Amapas is my top choice for where to stay because you get those incredible views and a bit of peace and quiet, but you can walk down the hill and be in Old Town in five minutes. It’s the best of both worlds!
Exploring the hidden side of this city is what made me fall in LOVE with it. I hope you find your own secret favorite spot too.
