I have spent so much time wandering the cobblestone streets of Puerto Vallarta that I sometimes forget what it’s like to be a tourist.
When you first arrive, it is so easy to get swept up in the main attractions, and don't get me wrong, I LOVE the energy of the Malecon!
But there is a whole other side to this city that most people never get to see.
If you really want to experience the magic of this place, you have to step away from the crowds and find the spots where we actually hang out.
It is about finding those quiet corners, the best street food, and the neighborhoods that feel like home the second you step out of your door.
Finding Peace at Isla del Rio Cuale
One of my absolute favorite places to escape the midday heat is Isla del Rio Cuale.
It is a literal island right in the middle of the city, tucked between Centro and the southern side of town.

Walking across the small hanging bridges feels like entering a different world.
The air is always cooler here because of the river and the massive, ancient trees that provide so much shade.
I love just sitting on a bench and watching the local artists work or browsing the market stalls for handmade crafts that you won't find in the big souvenir shops.
It is such a peaceful reprieve from the hustle and bustle, and it’s one of those puerto vallarta old town condo rentals secrets that makes living here so special.
If you take the time to walk all the way to the tip of the island where the river meets the sea, you’ll find a quiet spot that is perfect for reflecting on your trip.
The Best Way to Stay: Why Amapas is Everything
When people ask me where they should stay, I always tell them the same thing: Amapas is the absolute BEST.
I know everyone talks about Old Town and Zona Romantica, which are actually the same beautiful area, but Amapas is that hidden jewel right next door.
Amapas sits just a tiny bit higher up the hill, which means the views are UNBELIEVABLE.

You get all the convenience of being a two-minute walk from the best restaurants and bars, but you get to sleep in a neighborhood that is quiet and residential.
It feels more private and exclusive without being disconnected from the local vibe.
I find that staying in Amapas allows you to see the "real" Puerto Vallarta while still having easy access to all the zona romantica puerto vallarta rentals you could ever want.
The streets are lined with lush jungle greenery and beautiful traditional architecture.
It is honestly so much more relaxing to come home to a quiet street in Amapas after a long day of exploring.
I highly recommend checking out some of the condo rentals in this area if you want a truly local feel.
Seeking Out Secluded Sands at Colomitos
If you are a solo traveler or even a couple looking for adventure, you have to find Colomitos.
Most people stick to the main beaches like Los Muertos, and while they are great for people-watching, they can get BUSY.

Colomitos is a tiny, tiny beach cove that feels like your own private paradise.
To get there, you can take a water taxi from Boca de Tomatlan, or you can do what I do and hike the jungle trail.
The hike is AMAZING and takes you through some of the most beautiful coastal scenery you will ever see.
When you finally reach that little patch of golden sand and turquoise water, it feels like you've discovered a secret world.
It is the perfect place to swim and just soak in the natural beauty of the bay.
Eating Like a Local: The Taco Stand Tradition
You cannot say you've experienced PV until you've eaten at a local taco stand at midnight.
Forget the fancy sit-down places for a night and look for the spots with the plastic stools and the long lines of locals.

The best food in the city isn't found in a dining room; it’s found on a street corner under a yellow light.
I LOVE grabbing a few tacos al pastor with extra pineapple and sitting on a curb chatting with whoever is nearby.
It is where the real community happens.
I've written before about some of the hidden taco stands that you absolutely have to try during your stay.
You will find that the flavors are so much more intense and authentic than anything you'll get at a tourist-heavy restaurant.
Beyond the Guidebooks
There are so many other little spots that make this city special.
Have you ever visited the hot springs at Nuevo Ixtlan?
It’s about an hour away, but it is sooo worth the drive to soak in natural stone pools in the middle of the jungle.
Or the mountain village of San Sebastián del Oeste, where the air is crisp and the history is literally built into the walls.
These are the places where the locals actually go when we want a break from the coastal heat.
Puerto Vallarta is so much more than just a beach destination.
It is a place with a soul, and that soul is found in the small details.
It's the sound of the river at Rio Cuale, the smell of fresh tortillas in the morning, and the friendly "Buenos dias" from your neighbors in Amapas.
My Personal Recommendation
If you are planning your next trip, don't just book any place.
Think about how you want to FEEL when you wake up.
Do you want to be in the middle of the noise, or do you want to wake up to the sound of birds and a view of the bay in a quiet neighborhood?
I cannot stress enough how much I prefer the Amapas area for a stay that feels authentic and peaceful.
It is the best balance of everything this city has to offer.
For a great place to start your search, you should definitely take a look at the options available at Vizcarra 1 or check out the full list of condos on the main rental site.
Living like a local is about making choices that prioritize the experience over the convenience of a big hotel.
It’s about exploring the side streets, trying the street food, and finding your own secret spots.
I hope you find yours!
I am so grateful to call this place home, and I know you will fall in love with it just as much as I have.
