I have worked from Puerto Vallarta and planned Amapas stays for couples, so I know the biggest challenge: making room for real work without letting work take over the trip.

We can start the day in a quiet condo, walk downhill into Old Town for coffee, and return to a more peaceful hillside setting when we need to concentrate. The area also has beautiful greenery, colorful architecture, and views that make a normal workday feel much less ordinary.
The hill is part of the experience. Walking down is enjoyable, but coming back up can be tiring during the warmer part of the day. We usually walk when the weather feels comfortable and use a taxi or rideshare when we have bags, laptops, or a late dinner reservation.
That small bit of planning makes a big difference.
Choose a condo that can handle work and downtime
For a couple, I look for more than a pretty view. The condo needs to work as a temporary office, kitchen, bedroom, and place to recharge.

Amapas is close to several work-friendly cafés in Old Town. Café Vayan is a useful option when we want a table, coffee, and a little energy around us. Puerto Cafe has a more intimate feel and is better for focused work when we do not need a large setup.
Mi Cafe works well for a relaxed breakfast and a shorter work session. Its local atmosphere makes it easy to combine food with a little browsing after we close the laptops.
For lighter afternoon tasks, Monzon Brewing offers a more social setting. I would not choose it for a confidential video meeting, but it can be a fun place to finish emails or plan the next day.
For important presentations or long calls, a coworking space such as Joint Coworking is a better choice. We can use a professional workspace when we need dependable connectivity, then return to Amapas when the work is finished.
Before settling into any café, we check the opening hours, ask whether laptops are welcome, and order something rather than treating the table like a free office. A little courtesy goes a long way.
Plan a workcation week with breathing room
A relaxed workcation needs structure, but it should not feel like a business trip.
On arrival day, we settle in, test the Wi-Fi, unpack the work equipment, and find the easiest route down to Old Town. We also pick up water and a few breakfast items so the first work morning feels simple.
For the first full workday, we keep the schedule familiar. We work from the condo in the morning, take a proper lunch break, and use the afternoon for lighter tasks. After logging off, we walk through Old Town and choose dinner nearby.
The next day can be a café day. We work away from the condo for a few hours, then visit a gallery or stroll through the neighborhood before returning uphill.
For a heavier meeting day, we stay home or use coworking. This is when a dedicated backup plan matters most. We do not want to spend an important call searching for a quiet table.
The final workday is a good time for a market visit, a longer lunch, or a simple meal prepared at home. Keeping one evening open is also smart. Some of our favorite moments in Amapas happen when we have no reservation and nowhere else to be.
Shop like locals between work blocks
Rio Cuale Market is convenient for browsing handmade crafts, jewelry, clothing, and local goods. It is open daily according to current visitor information, generally from morning into the evening, but I still recommend confirming the hours during your stay.
The market works well as a short afternoon outing. We can walk through the stalls, choose a small handmade item, and continue toward Old Town for coffee or dinner.
The Olas Altas Farmers Market is another good option when it is operating during its seasonal period. It usually runs on Saturdays during the busier November-to-April season, with fresh produce and artisan products.
For a workcation couple, markets are useful beyond shopping. We can pick up fruit, snacks, tortillas, or ingredients for an easy meal. Cooking one or two nights keeps the schedule relaxed and gives us a reason to enjoy the condo instead of rushing back out.
Protect the couple time
The easiest way for work to take over a trip is to let the workday end without a plan.
We like having one small ritual after logging off. It might be a walk downhill, a swim at the beach, a cold drink, or ten quiet minutes on the terrace. The activity does not need to be impressive. It simply marks the end of work.
Old Town and Zona Romantica are the same lively area, so we can choose from restaurants, cafés, galleries, and local shops without arranging a complicated outing.
On a lighter evening, we walk through the colorful streets and stop wherever the atmosphere feels inviting. On a busy week, we prepare dinner in the condo and spend time on the balcony instead.
A private terrace is especially helpful for this. It gives us a place to talk, read, or enjoy a meal while staying close to home.
Small details that make the stay easier
I recommend packing light, breathable clothes, comfortable walking shoes, and a small day bag for the hill. A reusable water bottle is useful, especially when we are moving between the condo, cafés, and the market.
We also keep important work items in one place. Our passports, chargers, headphones, and backup data device stay together rather than scattered around the apartment.
Learning a few Spanish phrases helps too. “Hola,” “gracias,” and “por favor” are simple, but using them makes everyday interactions warmer.
Most importantly, we do not try to work from every café, visit every attraction, and eat at a different restaurant every night. Amapas is at its best when we slow down enough to enjoy the quiet.
