I have spent plenty of time exploring Puerto Vallarta as a couple, and one of my favorite date ideas is simple: shop for fresh ingredients, cook together, and enjoy dinner in our Amapas condo.
Amapas is my favorite place to rent for this kind of trip. You are close to Old Town, also called Zona Romantica, but the hillside setting gives the evening a calmer, more private feeling.
The best part is that the date starts before you ever turn on the stove.
Start at Mercado Municipal Emiliano Zapata
For a true market-to-kitchen experience, we usually begin at Mercado Municipal Emiliano Zapata in the Old Town area.
From Amapas, the walk downhill takes around 10 to 15 minutes, depending on your exact location and how often you stop to look around. The return trip is uphill, so we keep our shopping list manageable or use a short taxi ride when our bags get heavy.
The market is a great place to find fresh produce, tortillas, herbs, eggs, cheese, seafood, chicken, spices, and salsas. I love starting with the ingredients we recognize and then adding one or two things we have not cooked before.
A good couples’ shopping list includes:
- Fresh shrimp or fish
- Corn tortillas
- Mangoes or pineapple
- Tomatoes
- Red onion
- Cilantro
- Limes
- Serrano peppers
- Avocado
- Cabbage
- Mexican oregano or dried chiles
We usually go earlier in the day for the best selection, especially if seafood is part of the plan. Bring a reusable tote and small Mexican peso bills because individual market stalls may not accept cards.

Add one special ingredient from Mercado Ollin
After the traditional market, we like to stop at Mercado Ollin for one or two extras.
This smaller specialty market is useful when we want good bread, cheese, olives, pasta, wine, or an ingredient that is harder to find at the municipal market. We do not need to buy everything there. It works best as a final stop for the item that makes the meal feel a little more special.
For example, we might buy shrimp and fresh limes at the municipal market, then pick up cheese and a bottle of wine at Mercado Ollin.
That combination keeps the meal connected to the local market while giving us a few familiar touches for the condo kitchen.
If you visit the Olas Altas Farmers Market during its seasonal Saturday schedule, you may also find fresh bread, handmade pasta, local honey, cheeses, pastries, and small artisan foods. It is an enjoyable late-morning date, but market schedules can change, so check locally before planning your entire day around it.
Decide on the meal before you shop
The easiest mistake is buying too many ingredients without deciding what you will make.
For a relaxed date night, we like meals that use one pan, one cutting board, and very little complicated preparation. Fresh shrimp tacos are one of our favorites because the ingredients are colorful, quick to prepare, and easy to adjust.
For two people, we usually buy:
- About 12 to 16 cleaned shrimp
- Eight to 10 corn tortillas
- One mango
- Half a red onion
- One bunch of cilantro
- One small cabbage
- Three or four limes
- One avocado
- One or two serrano peppers
- Garlic
- Mexican oregano, cumin, or paprika
Ask the seafood vendor to help you choose shrimp that look firm and fresh. Keep seafood chilled during the trip back to the condo and cook it the same day.
If seafood is not your favorite, make the same meal with mushrooms, grilled vegetables, or chicken. The market-to-kitchen idea works with whatever sounds good to both of you.
Make the kitchen part of the date
One reason I enjoy staying in Amapas is that many condos have open kitchens with enough counter space for two people to work comfortably.
Before we begin, we unpack everything and rinse the produce. Then we divide the jobs.
One of us chops the mango, onion, cilantro, and serrano pepper for the salsa. The other prepares the shrimp and mixes the seasoning. We keep a bowl nearby for scraps and place everything we need within easy reach.

For the shrimp, combine minced garlic, lime juice, cumin, paprika, Mexican oregano, and a little salt. Let the mixture rest for about 20 minutes while you prepare the salsa.
For the mango salsa, dice one ripe mango and mix it with red onion, cilantro, lime juice, serrano pepper, and salt. Taste it before serving. If it is too sweet, add more lime. If you want more heat, add a little more serrano.
Warm the tortillas in a dry skillet or pan. Cook the shrimp in a hot pan until they turn pink and opaque, usually just a few minutes. Avoid overcooking them because they become firm quickly.
Set out the shrimp, salsa, cabbage, avocado, lime wedges, and tortillas so you can build your tacos at the table.
Make the terrace feel personal
We do not need a complicated setup to make dinner feel memorable.
A small table, two comfortable chairs, colorful napkins, handmade plates, and a few market flowers are enough. Mexican ceramics and woven textiles add color without making the table feel crowded.
I also like serving the salsa in a small bowl and putting the limes on a simple ceramic plate. Those little details make the meal feel connected to the shopping trip.
Choose music before cooking so neither of you has to keep checking a phone. Pour your drinks, put the market bags away, and give yourselves time to enjoy the meal instead of rushing through it.

The terrace is especially useful because it gives you a separate place to eat after the kitchen is clean. We often leave the dishes for a few minutes, sit down with the tacos, and talk about our favorite market discovery.
That conversation is part of the experience. Maybe one of you loved the fruit stall while the other found an interesting spice. Maybe you tried ordering in Spanish or asked a vendor how to prepare an unfamiliar ingredient.
A few practical condo tips
Before shopping, check the kitchen setup in your rental. Look for a sharp knife, cutting board, skillet, cooking utensils, plates, glasses, and enough refrigerator space.
It is also worth checking whether the condo has basics such as salt, oil, coffee, and drinking water. If you are unsure, plan to bring or buy them during your market stop.
Keep the meal simple if this is your first night. A full seafood dinner can be enjoyable, but it is not the best plan if you arrive tired after traveling.
For a shorter stay, buy only what you will use that day. Fresh herbs and fruit are easy to enjoy the next morning, but large quantities of seafood or produce may go unused.
If you are a solo traveller, the same plan works on a smaller scale. Buy one portion of fish or shrimp, make a simple salsa, and enjoy a quiet meal in your condo. But for couples, dividing the shopping and cooking makes the whole outing feel more connected.
Why Amapas works so well for this experience
Amapas is my first choice for a market-to-kitchen date night because it gives us both convenience and a sense of place.
We can walk downhill to the markets, return to a modern kitchen, and spend the rest of the day cooking without needing another reservation. The neighborhood also feels peaceful when we want a break from the busier streets below.
Old Town and Zona Romantica are close enough for another meal, coffee, or a walk whenever we want to go out. Still, Amapas remains the best place to rent when we want a condo that feels like our own base.
The combination of local ingredients, colorful Mexican design, and time together makes this one of my favorite Puerto Vallarta date ideas. It feels personal, flexible, and much more memorable than simply following a standard dinner itinerary.
I highly recommend planning an Amapas market-to-kitchen date night for your next couples’ vacation. Pick a market, choose one easy meal, share the cooking, and enjoy the results on your terrace.
