I have spent years exploring every corner of this beautiful city, and my absolute favorite way to spend a Saturday morning is wandering through the local markets.
There is something so special about finding a piece of art or a handmade textile that tells a story of the person who made it.

We always tell our guests that Amapas is the best place to rent because you get all the peace of the hillside while being just a short walk from the heart of the action.
The markets I’m about to share with you are all within easy reach of the Amapas area.
Whether you are looking for a vibrant serape for your living room or a hand-embroidered blouse, these weekend markets are where the magic happens.
The Olas Altas Farmers Market
The most famous spot for weekend shopping is definitely the Olas Altas Farmers Market.
It takes place every Saturday in Lázaro Cárdenas Park, which is right in the middle of the Zona Romántica (which is the same place as Old Town, just so you know!).
I LOVE the energy here!
The park is filled with white tents, and the smell of fresh food mixes with the sound of live music.
But the best part of all is the textiles.
You can find incredible table runners, pillowcases, and even full bedding sets that are hand-woven by local artisans.
I once bought a set of napkins here that were so intricate I almost didn't want to use them!
The vendors are usually the artists themselves, and they are so happy to tell you about the techniques they use.
If you are looking for something truly authentic, this is the first place you should go.
It usually starts around 9:30 AM and goes until early afternoon, but I recommend getting there early before the heat kicks in.
It is just a quick walk downhill from most of our Amapas rentals, making it a super easy morning trip.
Tianguis Cultural at Hidalgo Park
If you want something a little more low-key and artistic, you have to check out the Tianguis Cultural.
It is located near Hidalgo Park, which is just a bit north of the main tourist hub but still very walkable.
This market feels a bit more like a local art gallery on the street.
I have found some of the coolest jewelry and unique home decor pieces here.
The textiles here often lean more towards modern interpretations of traditional designs.
Think minimalist woven wall hangings or neutral-toned cotton rugs that look AMAZING in a contemporary home.

Exploring Isla Cuale
Even if you aren't here on a Saturday, the permanent market on Isla Cuale is a must-visit.
Isla Cuale is that lush, green island in the middle of the river that separates the North side from the Zona Romántica.
It is so peaceful to walk under the tall trees and listen to the river while you shop.
The stalls here are packed with everything from leather bags to silver jewelry.
But if you look closely at the textile stalls, you will find beautiful Otomí embroidery.
These are the white fabrics with colorful animal and flower patterns that everyone loves.
I always find myself wandering through these stalls even when I don't need anything.
The colors are just so bright and happy!
Plus, being surrounded by all those plants makes the whole shopping experience feel so much more relaxed.
If you are a solo traveler, this is a great place to spend an hour or two just soaking in the atmosphere.
It feels very safe and welcoming, and the vendors are usually quite measured and helpful.
Why Amapas is the Perfect Base
I honestly cannot emphasize enough how much we LOVE the Amapas area.

You are high enough up the hill to get incredible views of the ocean, but you are still so close to the markets.
Walking down the hill into the Zona Romántica for a morning of shopping is one of my favorite rituals.
The walk back up is a great little workout, but most people prefer a quick taxi or Uber after a long morning on their feet!
Staying in Amapas really lets you experience the city like a local rather than a tourist.

One of the best things about buying textiles in Puerto Vallarta is that they are so easy to pack!
You can fold up a beautiful woven rug or a stack of pillowcases and fit them right in your suitcase.
When you get home and put them out, it’s like a little piece of your vacation is still with you.

Most of the artisan vendors don't take cards, and while there are plenty of ATMs in the Zona Romántica, it is much easier to have pesos ready.
Second, don't be afraid to ask questions.
The people selling these items are often very proud of their work and love explaining the history behind the patterns.
Third, take your time.
The markets can be busy, but there is no rush.
Stop for a fresh coconut water or a taco while you browse.
It is all part of the experience!
