If you haven't stood on a busy street corner at midnight with a plastic plate and a napkin that’s basically a piece of wax paper, have you even been to Puerto Vallarta?
I’m serious.
There is a specific kind of magic that happens when the sun goes down and the carts roll out.
The smell of charred pork, fresh lime, and sizzling onions starts to drift through the air, and suddenly, you aren't even thinking about that fancy dinner reservation you made.
We have spent countless nights wandering through Old Town: which some people call Zona Romantica, but we just call it home: hunting for the absolute best tacos and hidden gems.
It’s our favorite thing to do.
Honestly, the food is the main reason we keep coming back to our favorite condo rentals in puerto vallarta year after year.
The First Rule of the Crawl
Before you head out, you need to know the vibes.
If a place has a giant menu in English and a host out front trying to pull you in, you are in the wrong place.
Look for the plastic stools.
Look for the crowd of locals standing around a cart.
And look for the guy with the machete who looks like he could slice a pineapple in his sleep.
That is where the gold is.
We always tell people that if you want the real experience, you have to be willing to get a little salsa on your shirt.
It’s part of the charm!
Stop 1: Mariscos Cisneros
We usually start our crawl in the late afternoon because you cannot miss the seafood.
Mariscos Cisneros is legendary for a reason.
Located on Aguacate between Cardenas and Carranza, this spot is a local institution.
They have a little seating area, but the real action is at the cart out front.
You MUST order the shrimp taco with cheese (taco de camarón con queso).
The shrimp is fresh, the cheese is perfectly melted and slightly crispy on the edges, and when you hit it with their house-made salsa?
OH MY GOD.
It is AMAZING!!
We also tried the ceviche tostadas, and they were so fresh they practically tasted like the ocean.
If you are a seafood lover, this is a non-negotiable stop.

Stop 2: The Pastor Powerhouse at Taqueria Hormiga
Once the sun actually sets, it’s time for the heavy hitters.
We headed over to the row of stands outside the Farmacia Guadalajara.
This area is like the Avengers of street food.
Every cart is a specialist.
Taqueria Hormiga is the second stand as you walk east from Insurgentes, and they are the masters of al pastor.
Watching the "pastorero" slice the meat and then flick a piece of pineapple from the top of the trompo into the taco is basically a performance art.
The meat is smoky, sweet, and savory all at once.
We usually order three or four just to be safe.
You can never have too many pastor tacos.
It’s also a great spot to see how much we love living like a local because the energy here is just so contagious.
Stop 3: Marisma Fish Tacos
If you still have room (and you better make room), you have to find Marisma Fish Tacos on Calle Naranja.
This is where you go for fried perfection.
Their fried fish tacos are probably the best we have ever eaten anywhere.
The batter is light and super crunchy, and the fish inside is flaky and hot.
They have a whole bar of toppings: cabbage, pico de gallo, different creams, and salsas: so you can build your dream taco.
I’m a big fan of the chipotle cream, but proceed with caution because it’s got a kick!
We found this place by accident one afternoon while exploring, and it’s been on our "must-visit" list ever since.

Stop 4: The Hidden Birria Gem
Most people think of tacos as a late-night thing, but birria is actually a breakfast and lunch staple.
Tacos de Birria “Chanfay” on Venustiano Carranza is a tiny, family-run spot that feels like a neighborhood secret.
The beef is stewed for hours until it just falls apart.
They serve it with a small cup of consommé (the broth), and you have to dip your taco into the broth.
It is SOOO juicy and rich.
It’s the best way to start your day, especially if you had one too many margaritas the night before.
We love these little local spots because they are so authentic and welcoming.
It really makes you feel like you are part of the community.
Even what to do when the weather isn't perfect usually involves finding a warm bowl of birria somewhere!
Stop 5: Dessert with Julio
You cannot finish a food crawl without something sweet.
Look for Julio’s Churros.
He usually sets up his cart around 6 pm, and you can smell the cinnamon and sugar from a block away.
The churros are made right in front of you: piping hot, crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside.
Do not even bother with other churro stands.
Julio is the king.
It’s the perfect ending to a night of exploring.
Why Amapas is the Place to Be
We have stayed all over the city, but we always come back to the same conclusion.
Amapas is the best place to rent, hands down.
It is tucked just slightly away from the noise of the main streets, so you get some peace and quiet, but you are only a five-minute walk from all these incredible food carts.
Plus, the views from the hills in Amapas are just stunning.
You get the best of both worlds: the traditional Mexican feel of Old Town and the modern comfort of the hills.
Whenever we are looking for puerto vallarta rental condos, we always check Amapas first.
It just makes sense.

Final Thoughts
Eating your way through Puerto Vallarta is an adventure.
It’s not just about the food; it’s about the people you meet and the stories you hear while standing in line.
Everyone is happy when there are tacos involved.
We highly recommend doing your own DIY crawl next time you are in town.
Don't be afraid to try the "hidden" carts that don't have a sign.
Those are usually the ones with the best recipes passed down through generations.
Puerto Vallarta is a foodie's paradise, and the street food is its soul.
We are so grateful for the amazing vendors who work so hard to share their culture with us every night.
We LOVE this city and we LOVE these tacos!
