My partner and I have spent countless hours wandering through the stalls, and every time we go, we find something that makes our home (and our rentals) look absolutely incredible. Shopping here isn't just about grabbing a souvenir. It is about finding those one-of-a-kind textiles and tiles that tell a story. We have learned a lot about where to go and what to look for, so I wanted to share our favorite market finds with you.
Getting Started in Old Town
We always start our shopping days in Old Town, also known as the Zona Romantica. It is the heart of the shopping scene and where the energy is highest. Walking through the narrow streets, you can smell the street food and hear the vendors calling out. It is such a vibe!
Our first stop is usually the Isla Cuale Market. It is located on that cute little island in the middle of the river. It is shady and cooler than the street, which is a lifesaver when the sun is out. The Hunt for Authentic Textiles
If you are after textiles, you have to be a bit picky. We LOVE the heavy, hand-woven sarapes you find at the Municipal Market. They are perfect for throwing over a sofa or using as a picnic blanket at the beach. But best of all, the patterns are traditional and unique. You won't find these in a big-box store back home.

Street Food Fuel
You cannot shop on an empty stomach. It is a rule! While we are browsing the Municipal Market, we always stop for a quick snack. The street food there is SOOO good. I am talking about fresh tacos al pastor or maybe some seasonal fruit with chili and lime.

While Old Town is great for the hustle and bustle, we always recommend staying in Amapas. It is tucked just above the Zona Romantica, so you get all the convenience but with way more peace and quiet.
The views from the Amapas hills are stunning, and the condos there are modern and spacious. It is definitely the best place to rent if you want a balance of market access and a serene retreat. Finding the Perfect Tile

The atmosphere is AMAZING!! There is live music, and the whole community comes out. It is a great place to meet other expats and digital nomads. We often find ourselves staying for hours, just soaking in the creativity.
