I have spent so much time walking the cobblestone streets of Puerto Vallarta that I feel like I know every stone by name.
There is something so special about this place that keeps me coming back every single year.
Most people come for the beach and the big resorts, but we prefer the side of the city that feels real and lived-in.
If you are looking for the heart of the action, you probably already know about Old Town and the Zona Romantica.
Just so we are clear, these are actually the same place!
Locals and long-time visitors use the names interchangeably, so don’t get confused when you hear both.
It is the most vibrant part of the city, full of life, art, and amazing food.
But if you want my honest advice on where to actually stay, I have one word for you: Amapas.
Amapas is tucked away just above the main hustle and bustle, and it is hands down the best place to rent a condo.
You get the incredible views of the bay without all the noise of the late-night clubs.
It feels like a secret garden overlooking the ocean, and I absolutely LOVE the quiet mornings there.
When I look for puerto vallarta rentals old town, I always check the Amapas area first because the walk down to the beach is short and the walk back up helps burn off those tacos!
Finding the Best Views Without the Crowds
One of our favorite things to do is find the high points of the city.
The view from the top is always worth the climb, especially at sunset.
You have probably heard of the Cerro de la Cruz lookout, which is AMAZING, but it can get very crowded.
If you want a more local secret, head over to the Faro de Matamoros lighthouse.
It is an old lighthouse located on Matamoros street, just a few blocks up from the Malecon.
The view from the platform there is incredible, and often you will have it all to yourself.
We love going there just before the fireworks go off from the pirate ship in the bay.
It is a great spot to see the whole city light up without having to push through a crowd.
If you want to experience more of these quiet moments, you should check out our post on finding peace in the heart of the city.
It covers even more spots where you can escape the tourist tracks and just breathe.

The Magic of the Mosaic Park
If you find yourself wandering near the beach, you have to spend some time in Lázaro Cárdenas Park.
It isn't just a park; it is a massive work of art.
Over the last several years, an artist and a huge group of volunteers have been covering the benches and walls with vibrant tile mosaics.
It is called "Parque de los Azulejos," and it is stunning.
Every time I go, I see a new detail I missed before.
It is the perfect place to sit with a coffee and watch the world go by.
I highly recommend visiting on a Saturday when they often have a local market with handmade crafts and food.
It is such a great way to support the local artists and take home something truly unique.

Where to Eat Like a Local
Forget the flashy places on the main strip for a minute.
If you want the real taste of Puerto Vallarta, you need to head to the Rio Cuale Market.
The market has been around since the 1950s and it is a total maze of shops and stalls.
Upstairs, you will find small "fondas" or kitchens where the locals eat.
The food is simple, fresh, and so tasty.
I usually order whatever the daily special is, and it never fails to be the best meal of the trip.
Another great secret is the taco stands that pop up after dark.
There is one near the corner of Insurgentes and Basilio Badillo that is always packed with locals.
That is how you know it is good!
We always say that to truly experience the joy of living like a local, you have to eat where the locals eat.
It makes the whole trip feel so much more authentic.
Why We Always Recommend Amapas
As I mentioned before, Amapas is our top pick for rentals.
It offers a level of privacy that you just don't get right in the middle of the Zona Romantica.
When you stay in Amapas, you are surrounded by lush jungle and modern architecture.
The condos there are designed to make the most of the ocean breeze.
We stayed at a place called Sueño recently and the terrace was just incredible.
If you are looking for zona romantica puerto vallarta rentals, you really can't beat the balance of comfort and location that Amapas provides.
You get to wake up to the sound of tropical birds instead of delivery trucks.
But you are still only a five-minute walk away from all the best restaurants and the beach.
It is the best of both worlds, really.

Hidden Rooftop Terraces
While everyone is looking for pools, I prefer a hidden garden terrace.
There are several small restaurants and bars in Old Town that are tucked away on rooftops.
They don't always have big signs out front, so you have to keep your eyes open.
One of my favorites is a tiny wine bar that overlooks the church.
Sitting up there with a glass of wine while the church bells ring is a core memory for me.
It is quiet, romantic, and feels completely separate from the busy streets below.
These are the kinds of places that make Puerto Vallarta feel like a small town instead of a major tourist destination.
Final Tips for Your Trip
Puerto Vallarta is a city that rewards those who explore.
Don't be afraid to walk up those steep hills or turn down a side street that looks interesting.
Always carry a little bit of cash for the markets and taco stands.
And most importantly, take your time.
The pace of life here is slower, and that is the whole point of a vacation!
If you are planning your next trip, I highly recommend looking at the Amapas area for your stay.
It truly is the most beautiful and peaceful part of the city.
We have found some amazing spots there that we return to time and time again.
Whether you are a solo traveler or coming with family, you will find that the local hospitality here is second to none.
I am so grateful for every trip we get to take to this beautiful corner of Mexico.
I hope these little secrets help you have an AMAZING and unforgettable stay!
