Puerto Vallarta is literally my favorite place on earth. I’ve been coming here for years, and every time I land, I get that same “YESSS I’M BACK” feeling.
I’m Jeff, the owner of The PVkid, and this post is a casual, friend-to-friend guide to the vibe in Zona Romantica (aka Old Town) and Amapas.
If you want to feel like you’re in Puerto Vallarta (not just visiting it), this is the area.
And I’m still going to say it every time: Amapas is hands down the best place to rent. You get the views and the calmer hillside feel, but you’re still right next to all the action in Zona Romantica.

What “local vibes” actually feels like here
We start most mornings slow.
Coffee first.
Then we’re out the door in sandals, walking down toward the beach like it’s no big deal… because in this neighborhood, it isn’t.
That’s the magic of staying here: you’re not planning your whole day around taxis or hotel schedules.
You just… go.
Walking to the beach is the whole point
From Amapas/Zona Romantica, the beach is a walk.
Not a “get in a car and deal with parking” situation.
A real walk where you pass little cafes, people opening up shops, and you can smell breakfast cooking before you even see the ocean.
Los Muertos Beach is right there, and the energy is always good.
If you’re a morning beach person, you’ll LOVE how easy it is to pop down early, grab a spot, and watch the day start.
Food is everywhere (and it’s SOOO good)
This area is food heaven.
Some nights we keep it simple with taco stands.
Other nights we sit down for seafood or a casual spot with great people-watching.
The best part is you can eat whatever you’re craving without turning dinner into a big mission.
Walk, eat, stroll, repeat.
And if you’re traveling with friends (or even if you’re a solo traveler), it’s an easy place to meet people because everyone is out walking around.
Why I’d pick a condo over a hotel here (every single time)
Hotels are fine.
But staying in a condo in this area just feels better.
It feels like you actually live here for a few days.
We love having a kitchen for simple stuff like coffee, fruit, leftovers, and cold drinks.
We love having a living room to spread out.
And we LOVE not feeling boxed into one room like a typical hotel stay.

Also, coming back after a beach day and having space to shower, reset, and chill before going out again is the best of all.
Quick picks if you want to stay in the middle of it
If you want a place that puts you right in the Zona Romantica vibe, I’d start here: zona romantica puerto vallarta rentals.
If you’re looking for another great Old Town option, check this one out: puerto vallarta rentals old town.
(Just a heads up: I’m keeping property names simple in this post, but both of those links go to solid condo rental options.)
Two quick reads before you book

My honest recommendation
If you want the true Puerto Vallarta experience—walkable beach days, amazing food, and a neighborhood that feels alive—stay in Zona Romantica/Old Town, and best of all, rent in Amapas for the views and vibe.
It’s highly recommended.
