I've been helping travelers find the perfect place to stay in Puerto Vallarta for years now. And honestly? This question comes up ALL the time.
Should you book a hotel or rent a condo?
The answer isn't always simple. But I'm going to break it down for you based on real experience.
Let's dive in.
The Hotel Experience in Puerto Vallarta
Hotels have their place. I get it.
You check in, someone carries your bags, and housekeeping shows up every day. There's a front desk ready to answer questions at any hour.
It's predictable. It's comfortable. It's what most people know.

Puerto Vallarta has some gorgeous hotels, especially along the coastline. Many offer restaurants, spas, and pools right on the property.
But here's the thing.
You're paying for all those services whether you use them or not. And you're sharing everything with hundreds of other guests.
That pool? Packed by 10 AM.
That restaurant? Hope you made a reservation.
Your room? Probably around 400 square feet if you're lucky.
Why Condo Rentals Are Different
Now let me tell you about the condo rental experience.
When you stay in a condo, you get an entire home to yourself. We're talking full kitchens, living rooms, multiple bedrooms, and private terraces with views that will make your jaw drop.
The space alone changes everything.
My family of four once tried to share a hotel room in Puerto Vallarta. Never again. The kids were climbing the walls by day two. There was nowhere to spread out, nowhere to have a quiet moment.
Compare that to a condo where everyone has their own space to decompress after a day at the beach.

You wake up on your own schedule. Make coffee in your kitchen. Sit on your private balcony and watch the sunrise over Banderas Bay.
No crowded breakfast buffets. No fighting for lounge chairs.
Just your space, your pace.
The Real Cost Comparison
Let's talk money for a second.
When you break down the actual value, condos almost always come out ahead. Especially for families, couples traveling together, or anyone staying longer than a few nights.
Here's what most people don't consider at first.
With a full kitchen, you can cook some meals at home. Hit up the local markets for fresh produce and seafood. Make breakfast before heading out for the day.
That alone saves a small fortune compared to eating every meal at resort restaurants.
Plus, you're getting WAY more square footage. A condo that sleeps four comfortably costs roughly the same as a single hotel room in a comparable area.
The math just makes sense.
Location Matters More Than You Think
This is where it gets interesting.
Hotels tend to cluster in certain zones. Many are in areas designed specifically for tourists, which can feel a bit removed from the real Puerto Vallarta experience.
When you rent a condo, you have options. Real neighborhoods. Actual communities where locals live and work.
And in my experience, the best areas for condo rentals are Old Town (also called Zona Romántica) and Amapas.
Old Town puts you right in the heart of everything. Restaurants, galleries, the famous Malecón boardwalk. You can walk everywhere and really feel like part of the neighborhood.

But if you want my honest recommendation? Amapas is where it's at.
Amapas sits just south of Old Town on the hillside. The views are INCREDIBLE. You're close enough to walk to all the action but removed enough to enjoy peace and quiet when you want it.
The sunsets from Amapas will absolutely ruin you for anywhere else. I'm not exaggerating.
Many of our favorite Old Town Puerto Vallarta condo rentals are located in this area for exactly this reason. Properties like Sueno and The Nest offer that perfect combination of location, comfort, and those stunning ocean views.
Privacy and Flexibility
Here's something people don't always think about until they're actually on vacation.
In a hotel, you're constantly around other guests. The elevator, the lobby, the pool, the hallways. There's always someone.
In a condo, you have complete privacy. It's just you and whoever you're traveling with.
Want to have a quiet morning in your pajamas? Go for it.
Feel like cooking a late dinner and eating on your terrace at midnight? Nobody's stopping you.
This kind of flexibility is a game-changer for how relaxed you actually feel on vacation.

You're not working around the hotel's schedule. The restaurant doesn't close at 10 PM. The pool isn't off-limits after sunset.
You make your own rules.
The Local Experience
This might be my favorite part.
Staying in a condo lets you live like a local, even if just for a week.
You discover the little coffee shop around the corner. The taco stand that only locals know about. The shortcut to the beach that tourists never find.
You become part of the neighborhood in a way that's simply impossible when you're staying at a big resort.
Puerto Vallarta vacation rentals in areas like Old Town and Amapas put you right in the middle of authentic Mexican culture. Not the sanitized, tourist-friendly version. The real thing.
Morning yoga on the beach. Fresh fruit vendors walking by. The sounds of the neighborhood waking up.
It's a completely different experience than watching it all from behind a resort wall.
When Hotels Make Sense
Look, I'm being honest here. Hotels aren't always the wrong choice.
If you're only in town for one night, a hotel might be easier logistically.
If you need very specific accessibility accommodations, some hotels are better equipped.
If you genuinely want someone else handling everything and money isn't a concern, the full-service hotel experience delivers.
But for most travelers? Especially families, groups, or anyone staying three nights or more?
A condo rental is the better choice. Period.
My Recommendation
After years of exploring Puerto Vallarta and helping countless visitors find their perfect stay, here's what I tell everyone.
If you want the real Puerto Vallarta experience, rent a condo.
Stay in Old Town or Amapas. Give yourself space to breathe. Wake up to ocean views and coffee on your own terrace.
You'll spend less money, have more space, and create memories that a generic hotel room simply can't deliver.
Highly recommended.
