We have spent so many years exploring the corners of Puerto Vallarta, but there is something about the Amapas neighborhood that keeps pulling us back.
It is my absolute favorite place to stay when I want to feel connected to the ocean without the noise of the main tourist strips.

One of the best things we discovered recently is a series of hidden trails that connect Amapas to the stunning coves of Conchas Chinas.
It is not a long hike, but it feels like a total adventure that most visitors completely miss.
Starting at El Púlpito
Our journey always begins at the very south end of the beach in the Old Town area.
You will see a massive rock formation called El Púlpito sticking out into the water.
It looks like you can’t go any further, but if you look closely, there is a set of stone stairs built right into the cliff.
Climbing these stairs is the "gateway" to the more private side of the coast.
I LOVE the view from the top of the stairs because you can see the entire bay stretching out behind you.
The stairs can be a little steep, so take your time and enjoy the breeze.
Once you reach the top and come down the other side, you find yourself on Playa Amapas.
The Quiet Beauty of Playa Amapas
Playa Amapas is much quieter than the main beaches.
We often see couples just sitting on the sand here because it feels so much more secluded.
There are no loud beach clubs or rows of umbrellas here.
It is just the sound of the waves and the lush green jungle hanging over the sand.

Finding the Coastal Path
At the far south end of Playa Amapas, the real "hidden" part of the trail begins.
There is a narrow path made of concrete and natural rock that hugs the shoreline.
It is AMAZING how the path winds around the boulders and through the trees.
One minute you are under the shade of massive palms, and the next you are looking down into tide pools filled with tiny fish.
It feels very intimate and romantic walking single file through the jungle bits.
We always feel like we are the only people in the world when we are on this stretch of the trail.
Reaching the Conchas Chinas Coves
After about fifteen minutes of walking, the trail opens up into the first of many small coves known as Conchas Chinas.
This is my favorite part of the whole walk.
The sand is whiter here, and the water is so clear it looks like a swimming pool.
Each cove is separated by rocky points, so you can easily find a private spot to sit together.
We like to bring a small bag with water and some fruit because there are no shops once you get past the main beach.
It is just you and the ocean.

Practical Tips for Your Hike
If you are planning to do this walk, here are a few things we have learned.
First, wear sandals that have a strap or light sneakers.
Flip-flops are okay, but some of the rocks on the path can be a little slippery if they get wet from the waves.
Second, bring plenty of water!
The humidity in the jungle parts can make you thirsty pretty fast.
Third, try to go in the middle of the day if you want the most vibrant colors in the water.
The turquoise really pops when the sun is directly overhead.
After a long morning of hiking and swimming, we usually head back toward town for a big meal.

This coastal trail is truly one of the hidden gems of Puerto Vallarta.
It doesn't cost anything, it's not crowded, and it gives you a perspective of the coast that you can't get from a car or a boat.
