I have been living the dream as a puerto vallarta digital nomad for quite some time now, and let me tell you, there is nothing like it. One of the biggest questions I get from other nomads planning to move here is about the day-to-day stuff. When I first arrived, I wasn't sure how I’d manage my weekly food runs without a car, especially living in the hilly, beautiful area of Amapas. But after a few weeks of exploring, I realized that getting groceries here is actually one of the highlights of my week. It is not just about ticking items off a list; it is about the smells, the colors, and the friendly faces you see every time you step out.
Why Amapas is My Base
Before we dive into the markets, I have to say that choosing to stay in Amapas was the best decision I ever made. I LOVE this neighborhood!! It sits just above the hustle and bustle, giving you a bit of peace and quiet while still being a short walk away from all the action in Old Town. People sometimes call it the Zona Romantica, and just so you know, they are talking about the exact same place!
Amapas is, in my opinion, the absolute best place to rent if you want that perfect balance of traditional charm and modern comfort. The views are incredible, and the vibe is just so much more relaxed than being right in the middle of the noise. Plus, the workout you get walking those hills means you can definitely justify that extra taco later!
The "Corner Store" Experience: Supermercado Amapas
My absolute lifesaver is Supermercado Amapas. If you are a solo traveller or a busy nomad, this place will be your best friend. It is tucked right in the heart of the neighborhood and has almost everything you need for a quick top-up. I go there for my morning coffee beans, eggs, and those little snacks that keep me going through a long Zoom call.
But best of all? They have a little spot inside called Tina’s Corner. They make these amazing prepared meals that are perfect when you have a deadline and zero energy to cook. I’ve grabbed many lunches there and eaten them on my balcony while looking out over the jungle. It is SOOO convenient!
The Social Hub: Olas Altas Farmers Market
If you are looking for that community feel, you have to hit the Olas Altas Farmers Market on Saturdays. It is just a quick walk down the hill into the main part of Old Town. This isn't just a grocery run; it is a social event! You’ll see plenty of other nomads and locals catching up over artisanal bread and fresh-pressed juices.
I always head there early to grab the best sourdough and some organic greens. They also have some unique local crafts, but for me, it is all about the food. The atmosphere is so vibrant and colorful: it really makes you feel like you are part of the PV community.
Going Local: Mercado Emiliano Zapata
For a more authentic experience, I highly recommend checking out the Mercado Emiliano Zapata. This is a traditional Mexican municipal market, and it is where I get my freshest produce and meat. The prices aren't listed on big fancy signs, and you might need a little bit of Spanish, but the quality is unbeatable.
The rows of bright tomatoes, huge bunches of cilantro, and exotic fruits I can’t even name yet are just STUNNING. I usually spend about an hour here just soaking it all in. The "Big Run" to Ley

I usually take a quick bus or a taxi back up to Amapas when I have heavy bags. Pro tip: always bring your own reusable bags! It is better for the environment, and they are much sturdier for the trek back to your condo.
My Nomad Shopping Tips
Living here has taught me a few things about the grocery game. First, don't try to do it all at once. I prefer doing smaller, more frequent trips to the local markets for fresh stuff and only doing the big supermarket run when I really need to. It keeps your food fresher and your walks lighter!

The local markets are more than just stores; they are the heartbeat of the neighborhood. The kindness of the vendors and the quality of the food make every meal feel special. I am so grateful to call this place home for now.
