I still remember the first time I walked into one of the rental condos in puerto vallarta and felt my jaw drop. It wasn't just the view of the Pacific (though that was stunning!), but the explosion of color on the sofa.

I later learned these are called Otomí textiles, also known as Tenangos. If you have ever been to Mexico, you’ve probably seen them. They are those bright white cloths covered in fantastical animals and flowers stitched in every color of the rainbow.
I have spent a lot of time exploring the local markets in Old Town, and I can tell you that these pieces are more than just decor. They are literally stories told with a needle and thread.

What Exactly are Otomí Textiles?
The history behind these textiles is actually quite moving. The Otomí people come from the mountains of Hidalgo, specifically a place called Tenango de Doria.
Back in the 1960s, a terrible drought hit their region. People couldn't grow food, and the community was struggling to survive. To make ends meet, the local women took their traditional embroidery and started creating larger, more commercial pieces to sell.
But here is the coolest part: the designs aren't just random. Legend says the patterns are inspired by ancient cave paintings found in the nearby mountains.
When you look at a Tenango, you are looking at a "visual codex." It’s a map of their myths, their environment, and their spirits. I think that is just SOOO AMAZING!!!!

I used to just think the animals were cute, but then I started asking the local artisans in the Zona Romantica what they meant.

I LOVE how these pieces bring so much energy into a room. Even if the rest of the condo is very modern and minimalist, one Otomí wall hanging changes the whole vibe. It feels authentic. It feels like Mexico.

Puerto Vallarta has some of the most beautiful modern architecture I’ve ever seen. But sometimes, modern can feel a bit cold.
That is where these textiles come in. Most of the pieces use a very specific "herringbone" stitch that makes the colors pop against the white cotton background.
In our experience, the best way to use them is as an accent. Think:
- A long table runner on a heavy wooden dining table.
- A framed piece of embroidery as the main art in the living room.
- A few bright cushions tossed onto a neutral bed.

It’s just a tiny bit up the hill from the main hustle and bustle of Old Town (which is also known as the Zona Romantica). You get the most incredible views, but you are still just a short walk away from the beach and all the best taco stands.
The condos in Amapas tend to be very modern and spacious. Many of them are decorated with these beautiful local crafts, which I find so much more inviting than the cookie-cutter furniture you see in some other areas.
Staying in Amapas gives you that perfect balance of peace and proximity. You can spend your morning shopping for hand-stitched treasures in the market and your afternoon relaxing on your balcony with a view of the bay.
Shopping for Your Own Treasures
If you want to bring a piece of this magic home with you, you are in luck. Puerto Vallarta is full of amazing galleries and shops that support Indigenous artisans.
I always tell my friends to skip the cheap, machine-printed stuff you see at the airport. You want the real deal. You can tell it's authentic by looking at the back of the fabric, real hand-embroidery is very economical with the thread, so the back often looks almost like a mirror of the front, but with tiny knots.
Buying directly from the artisans or from reputable cooperatives ensures that the money goes back to the families who have been doing this for generations. It’s a way to say "thank you" for sharing their beautiful culture with us.
