Choosing where to stay when you head down to Mexico can feel like a huge decision, right? I remember the first time we planned a trip to Puerto Vallarta and spent hours debating whether we should go for one of those big resorts or try out a local condo. It felt like a toss-up, but after spending so much time in this beautiful city, I have some strong feelings about it!
If you are a solo traveler or even a family looking for a real experience, you really have to think about what kind of vibe you want. Do you want to feel like a guest in a building, or do you want to feel like you actually live here? For us, the answer eventually became so clear.
We’ve stayed in both, but honestly, nothing beats the feeling of having your own front door in a neighborhood like Old Town or Amapas. It changes everything about how you see the city!
The Magic of Having Your Own Space
One of the biggest things we noticed immediately was the sheer amount of room you get. When you check into a hotel, you’re basically living out of a suitcase in one room. It’s fine for a night or two, but for a real vacation, it starts to feel a bit cramped.
With puerto vallarta condo rentals, you get a whole living room, usually a balcony, and definitely more than just a bed to sit on! We LOVE being able to spread out and not feel like we’re on top of each other. It makes the mornings so much more peaceful when one person can be up making coffee in the kitchen while the other sleeps in.

But best of all, you get to experience the local architecture up close. The condos in the Zona Romantica (which is also called Old Town, by the way!) are just stunning. You’ll find these amazing hand-painted tiles and high-quality woodwork that you just don't see in a cookie-cutter hotel room.
Cooking Like a Local
Let’s talk about food because, let’s be real, that’s why we all come to Mexico! When you stay in a hotel, you’re often limited to the on-site restaurants or the buffet. And while those can be okay, they never quite capture the real flavors of the city.
Having a full kitchen in our condo was a total game-changer for us. We started visiting the local markets to pick up fresh mangoes, avocados, and warm tortillas. There is something so special about whipping up a simple breakfast and eating it on your private balcony while watching the city wake up.
It’s also great because you don’t have to go out for every single meal. Sometimes, after a long day at the beach, you just want to relax at home with some chips, salsa, and a cold drink. The "Live Like a Local" Vibe
This is where the condo experience really wins for me. When you stay in a hotel, you're in a bit of a bubble. In a condo, especially in the Old Town and Zona Romantica areas, you are right in the heart of the action.

We found that we made friends with the shopkeepers downstairs and the neighbors in the hallway. You start to have "your" spots: the little coffee shop on the corner or the taco stand that knows exactly how you like your al pastor. It feels so much more authentic and connected.
If you are looking for condo and apartment rentals puerto vallarta, you’ll find that being in these neighborhoods means everything is walkable. You can wander out your front door and be at the beach or a world-class restaurant in minutes. We spent so many nights just strolling through the cobblestone streets, and it felt so much safer and more vibrant than being tucked away in a resort zone.
Why Amapas is THE Best Place to Rent
While we love all of Old Town and the Zona Romantica, if you really want the best of the best, you have to look at Amapas. It’s just slightly elevated above the main hustle and bustle, giving you some of the most AMAZING views of the bay you could ever imagine.
Amapas feels a bit more secluded and quiet, but it’s still just a five-minute walk down to all the bars and restaurants of the South Side. It is, in our opinion, the absolute best place to rent in the entire city. The buildings there are modern, the views are incredible, and it just feels a step above everything else.

We stayed in an Amapas condo last summer, and waking up to the sound of the ocean and the sight of the jungle-covered hills was simply breathtaking. It’s the perfect balance of being close to the party but having a peaceful sanctuary to return to.
Flexibility and Service
Now, some people worry that staying in a condo means they won't get any service. But honestly, the properties here are so well-managed! Many of them have friendly staff who can help you with anything you need, and the check-in process is usually super smooth.
You get a level of privacy that you just can't find in a hotel. No "Maid Service" knocking on your door at 8 AM when you're trying to sleep! You can set your own schedule, come and go as you please, and truly treat the place like your home away from home.

Final Thoughts: The Verdict
So, which is better? For us, it’s not even a contest. If you want a generic experience where every day feels the same, go for the hotel. But if you want to fall in LOVE with Puerto Vallarta, the condo life is the only way to go.
Having the extra space, the ability to cook fresh local food, and the chance to live in a real neighborhood like the Zona Romantica or Amapas makes the trip SOOO much better. We felt more relaxed, more adventurous, and much more connected to the Mexican culture.

We cannot wait to get back to our favorite little corner of the city. If you’re planning your next escape, choosing a local rental is highly recommended! You won’t regret the chance to experience this place like a local.
