I absolutely LOVE the Puerto Vallarta Malecon.
It's one of the first places I take friends and family when they visit me here. And honestly? I never get tired of walking it myself.
If you're planning a trip to Puerto Vallarta, the Malecon needs to be at the top of your list. This oceanfront boardwalk is the heart and soul of the city.
Let me tell you everything you need to know.
What Exactly Is the Malecon?
The Malecon is a kilometer-long oceanfront boardwalk that runs right along the Pacific Ocean. It stretches about 11 blocks from Hotel Rosita on the north end all the way down to Lázaro Cárdenas Park in the Zona Romantica (which is the same thing as Old Town, by the way : locals use both names interchangeably).
The entire boardwalk is vehicle-free.
That's right. No cars. No motorcycles. Just people walking, biking, and soaking in the AMAZING ocean views.
It's completely safe for families, couples, and solo travelers. You can stroll at your own pace without worrying about traffic.

It's Free and Open 24/7
Here's something I love about the Malecon : visiting costs absolutely nothing.
Zero. Nada.
The boardwalk is open around the clock. You can walk it at sunrise, sunset, or even at 2 AM if you want.
Most restaurants close after 10 PM and bars wind down around 2 AM. But the boardwalk itself? Always accessible.
Street drinking is actually permitted along the Malecon, which makes it a fun spot to grab a cocktail and walk with friends as the sun goes down.
The Art Is Incredible
One of my favorite things about the Malecon is that it's basically an open-air art museum.
Sculptures line the entire walkway. Colorful murals pop up everywhere. Local artists display their work right along the ocean.
You'll see everything from bronze statues to sand sculptures to rock-balancing displays. The creativity here is AMAZING.
I always tell visitors to slow down and really look at the art. Take photos. Read the plaques. Each piece tells a story about Puerto Vallarta's culture and history.

Don't Miss the Danza de Los Voladores
This one is special.
The Danza de Los Voladores : or Dance of the Flyers : performs daily on the Malecon. You can catch them from 10 AM to 2 PM and again from 6 PM to 10 PM.
Four performers climb a tall pole, tie ropes around their waists, and spin down while playing music. It's an ancient Mesoamerican tradition that will absolutely take your breath away.
I've seen it dozens of times and it still gives me chills.
Make sure to tip the performers. They work incredibly hard to share this beautiful tradition with visitors.
Where to Eat and Drink
The Malecon has sooo many good food options.
La Bodeguita del Medio is a local favorite for mojitos and live salsa music. The energy in there is infectious. You'll probably end up dancing.
If you want something quieter, Bar La Playa has a more relaxed vibe with ocean views.
But honestly? My favorite thing is the street food.
Walk along the boardwalk and you'll find vendors selling nieve de garrafa (this amazing sorbet-style ice cream), fresh tacos, elote (corn), and all kinds of authentic Mexican dishes.
Bring cash though. Most street vendors don't take cards.

The Nightlife Is Legendary
After 10 or 11 PM, the Malecon transforms.
This is when the nightlife really kicks in. Clubs like Mandala, La Vaquita, Zoo, and Señor Frog's come alive with music, dancing, and energy.
If you're looking for a fun night out, this is the place to be.
I'm not as young as I used to be, but I still love walking the Malecon at night just to people-watch and soak in the atmosphere.
Best Time to Visit
My favorite time to walk the Malecon is late afternoon into sunset.
The temperatures cool down. The light turns this warm, orange-red color. Everything looks magical.
It's the perfect time for photos, especially near Los Arcos Amphitheater (The Arches). The sunset views from there are absolutely unforgettable.
This is also peak "romantic stroll" time. Couples walk hand-in-hand. Families enjoy the cooler weather. Street performers come out. It's beautiful.
If you want to avoid crowds, early morning is great too. You'll have the boardwalk mostly to yourself.
Shopping on the Malecon
You'll find plenty of shopping opportunities along the walk.
Plaza Malecón has shops and boutiques. The Isla del Río Cuale Flea Market is great for unique finds.
At the southern end, the Mercado Municipal Rio Cuale offers souvenirs and local products. Prices are negotiable here, so don't be afraid to haggle a little.
I always pick up small gifts for friends back home at these markets.

Practical Tips for Your Visit
Wear comfortable shoes. Seriously.
You'll be walking a lot, and the boardwalk can get warm during the day. Flip-flops are fine, but sneakers or walking sandals are better if you plan to explore the full length.
Bring sunscreen and a hat if you're visiting during the day. The sun is strong here.
Carry some cash for street food and vendors.
And don't forget to tip the street performers and artists. They make the Malecon so special.
Where to Stay Near the Malecon
If you want easy access to the Malecon, staying in Old Town (Zona Romantica) or Amapas is the way to go.
I always recommend Amapas to visitors. It's just south of the Zona Romantica, close to everything, but a little quieter and more residential. You get the best of both worlds.
There are some AMAZING condo rental in puerto vallarta mexico in the Amapas area. You can walk to the Malecon in minutes and still have a peaceful place to come home to.
If you prefer being right in the heart of the action, there are also great puerto vallarta rentals condo in Old Town. You'll be steps from the boardwalk, restaurants, and nightlife.
Either way, you really can't go wrong staying in this part of the city.
My Final Thoughts
The Puerto Vallarta Malecon is one of those places that just makes you happy.
The ocean breeze. The art. The music. The food. The people.
It captures everything I LOVE about this city.
Whether you're here for a week or a month, make sure you spend time on the Malecon. Walk it at sunset. Try the street tacos. Watch the Voladores. Take a million photos.
It's an experience you won't forget.
Highly recommended.
