Why These Beaches Are Different
Most visitors stick to the main beaches in town. Playa de los Muertos gets packed. The hotel zones are wall-to-wall umbrellas.
But head south by boat and everything changes.
These three hidden gems, Yelapa, Majahuitas, and Las Animas, feel like stepping into a completely different world. No cars. No high-rises. Just jungle, sand, and crystal-clear water.
The only way to reach them is by boat from either Boca de Tomatlán or Los Muertos Pier. This keeps things local and authentic.
And honestly? That's exactly what makes them so special.
Getting There: The Boat Ride
Here's the deal. You'll need to take a water taxi.
The most popular departure point is Boca de Tomatlán. It's a small fishing village about 20 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta by car or bus.
From there, water taxis run regularly throughout the day.
My recommendation? Get there early. Like, before 10 AM early.
The morning light on the water is absolutely gorgeous. Plus you'll beat the day-trippers and have more beach to yourself.

The beach is beautiful. Golden sand, calm waters, and a row of beachfront restaurants ready to serve you.
I always head straight to Los Conos Restaurant. The seafood there is incredible. Fresh fish, cold drinks, toes in the sand. What more could you want?
Las Animas has a nice energy. It's relaxed but not deserted. You'll see local families, other travelers, and plenty of friendly faces.
Pro tip: This beach is usually the first stop on the water taxi route heading to Yelapa. So you can easily hop off here, enjoy a few hours, and catch another boat to continue your adventure.
Beach #2: Majahuitas
Okay, this one is my personal favorite. I'm not even going to pretend to be objective here.
Majahuitas is the SMALLEST and most secluded of the three beaches.
If you're looking for peace and quiet, this is your spot.
The cove is protected by jungle on all sides. There's a reef in the water that makes it incredible for snorkeling. I've seen colorful fish, sea stars, and even the occasional sea turtle.
Bring your own snorkel gear if you have it. Kayaking here is also amazing.
Because Majahuitas is harder to reach and less developed, fewer people make the trip. On my last visit, we had an entire stretch of beach practically to ourselves for hours.
It felt like finding a secret.
The vibe here is completely chill. No loud music. No vendors walking by every five minutes. Just waves, birds, and that incredible jungle backdrop.
If you want a truly quiet tropical escape, Majahuitas is it. Highly recommended for couples or anyone who just needs to decompress.
Beach #3: Yelapa
Yelapa is the most famous of these hidden beaches. But don't let that scare you off.
It's still way more authentic than anything you'll find in the hotel zone.
This small fishing village sits in a beautiful cove about 30-40 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta by boat. The setting is stunning, lush jungle mountains surrounding a crescent of sand and sea.
There are no roads in Yelapa. No cars. People get around by boat or on foot.
That alone makes it feel like another world.
The beach has locally owned restaurants right on the sand. Pull up a chair, order some freshly caught fish, and watch the pelicans dive for their lunch. The seafood here is sooo good.
But best of all? There's a waterfall.
It's called Cola de Caballo (Horsetail Falls), and it's about a 20-minute hike from the beach. The trail winds through the jungle and ends at a gorgeous swimming hole.
I cannot emphasize this enough, go early if you want to avoid crowds. Weekend afternoons get busy at the waterfall.
Morning visits are pure magic. Cool water, green jungle, and that feeling of discovery.
Yelapa has a special energy. Part beach town, part jungle retreat, all incredible.
Planning Your Day Trip
Here's how I usually plan my hidden beach adventures.
Morning: Catch an early water taxi from Boca de Tomatlán. Head to Yelapa first and hike to the waterfall while it's still cool.
Midday: Return to the beach for lunch and swimming. Those beachfront restaurants are waiting.
Afternoon: Catch a water taxi back and stop at Las Animas or Majahuitas on the way. Snorkel, relax, repeat.
Evening: Head back to your condo in time for sunset drinks on your balcony.
