I have spent years exploring Puerto Vallarta’s neighborhoods, markets, cafés, and beaches, and Amapas remains my favorite place for a date built around local flavor.
If you are a couple working remotely or planning a longer stay, Amapas gives you a peaceful hillside base close to the food, art, and everyday energy of Old Town, also known as Zona Romantica. The area has steep streets and stairs, but the walk down brings you quickly to some of our favorite places.
Here are the date ideas I return to whenever we want to enjoy Puerto Vallarta like locals.
1. Start With Coffee and a Slow Café Morning
One of my favorite Amapas dates begins with no strict schedule.
We walk downhill toward the cafés around Olas Altas and Basilio Badillo, choose a table with shade, and order strong coffee with something sweet. A concha, pan dulce, or a plate of chilaquiles makes an easy start to the day.
This is also a good routine if one or both of you work remotely. We bring our laptops for a short planning session, but we try not to turn the whole date into a workday. We answer important messages, close the screens, and spend the rest of the morning talking.
Look for cafés with visible Wi-Fi information, indoor air conditioning, and comfortable seating. Some sidewalk tables are perfect for people-watching, while indoor spaces work better when the heat rises.
The best part is that you can turn a normal coffee break into a real neighborhood walk. Amapas has colorful walls, Mexican tile details, small tiendas, and plenty of quiet corners to explore on the way back.
2. Make the Market Your Lunch Date
Markets are one of the easiest ways to connect with the real rhythm of Puerto Vallarta.
We like visiting the Mercado Municipal Emiliano Zapata for fresh fruit, tortillas, cheese, seafood, and prepared food. It feels practical and lively, not staged for visitors. You can walk through the aisles together, choose ingredients, and stop at a simple food counter when you want a quick meal.
Bring a reusable cloth bag and wear comfortable shoes. You will probably buy more than you planned, especially when the mangoes, limes, avocados, and handmade goods start competing for your attention.
The Rio Cuale Market is another fun option. It has artisan goods, clothing, ceramics, woven pieces, and food stalls. We enjoy giving each other a small challenge, such as finding one useful handmade item or choosing a ceramic piece for our condo.
For a seasonal Saturday outing, check whether the Olas Altas Farmers Market is operating during your visit. It usually runs during the busier November-to-April season and is a great place to browse local breads, cheeses, honey, salsas, chocolates, and prepared snacks.
Market dates and vendor hours can change, so we always check current information before making a special trip.
3. Plan a Ceviche and Aguachile Tasting
For couples who love seafood, the Tuesday ceviche and aguachile market is a fun date with plenty of variety.
The market usually takes place on Andador Francisca Rodríguez from noon into the afternoon. Instead of ordering one large meal, we share several small portions and compare the flavors.
One dish may be bright with lime, another may have more chile, and a third may feature a different style of seafood altogether. It gives you something to talk about while you eat, and sharing makes the date feel more relaxed.
I recommend arriving earlier rather than waiting until the last hour. Bring water, use sunscreen, and carry a small amount of cash for independent vendors. After lunch, we like wandering through the nearby streets before stopping for coffee or a cold drink.
This is a particularly good date for remote-working couples because it fits naturally between meetings. You can finish your morning work, enjoy lunch together, and return to Amapas for a quiet afternoon.
4. Choose a Handmade Souvenir Together
Amapas and the streets below it are full of color, texture, and small creative details.
We enjoy looking for hand-painted ceramics, woven bags, local jewelry, textiles, and decorative pieces. The goal is not to shop quickly. Instead, we ask vendors about the materials, colors, and techniques behind the work.
A handmade item feels more meaningful when you know something about the person who created it. We once spent nearly half an hour discussing a ceramic piece before deciding where it would fit in our home.
If you are staying in Amapas, choose something practical for your space. A serving dish, textile runner, or small wall piece can become part of your daily routine after the trip.
Remember to wrap fragile items carefully and leave room in your luggage. A reusable bag is much easier to carry than several small paper bags while walking uphill.
5. Take a Work Break for a Beach Walk
Los Muertos Beach is close enough for a spontaneous afternoon date.
From Amapas, the walk downhill usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes, depending on your starting point and how many stairs you take. The route back is steeper, so we often walk down and use a taxi for the return when the heat is strong.
At the beach, we keep things simple. We walk beside the water, share fresh fruit or a cold drink, and sit for a while without checking our phones. You can also choose a beach club or a casual restaurant nearby if you want a longer stop.
For remote workers, this is a wonderful way to divide the day. Finish a focused work block, change into comfortable clothes, and head out before the afternoon disappears.
Bring sandals with a secure strap, sunscreen, drinking water, and a light cover-up. The sun can feel intense, and the hillside walk makes hydration especially important.
6. Cook a Market Dinner at Your Condo
A market date does not have to end when you return home.
We love picking up fresh ingredients and preparing a simple dinner together. Even an easy meal of tortillas, avocado, grilled seafood, tomatoes, fruit, and salsa feels special when we bought everything during the day.
Choose a rental with a useful kitchen, enough counter space, and a comfortable dining area. A private terrace or balcony also gives you a pleasant place to eat outdoors, as long as you check the building rules and weather conditions.
Cooking together works well for couples who want a quieter evening. One person can prepare the ingredients while the other handles drinks or music. It feels personal without requiring a complicated recipe.
This is also where Amapas stands out as the best place to rent. You get easy access to local food and beaches, while your condo gives you space to slow down afterward.
7. Add a Local Art Walk to Your Afternoon
Amapas is a good neighborhood for couples who enjoy art but do not want to spend the entire day inside a large museum.
We like looking for colorful murals, small galleries, ceramics, and Mexican design details while walking through the hillside streets. The experience feels casual. You can stop when something catches your eye and continue whenever you are ready.
Take photos of the colors and patterns, but also leave time to look closely. Some murals include small details that are easy to miss when you hurry.
Wear supportive shoes because the streets are uneven in places. If you are carrying art or ceramics, consider taking a taxi back rather than balancing everything on the uphill walk.
8. Build a Simple Amapas Date Plan
If you only have one full day, this is the schedule I would choose:
- Morning: Coffee and breakfast at a café near Olas Altas.
- Late morning: Browse the local market or artisan stalls.
- Lunch: Share ceviche, aguachile, tacos, or market snacks.
- Afternoon: Walk toward Los Muertos Beach and spend time by the water.
- Early evening: Return to Amapas by taxi, pick up ingredients, and cook together.
The plan works because it leaves room for conversation. You are not rushing from one attraction to another, and every part of the day includes something local.
Before booking, check the walking distance from the condo to the main road, ask about Wi-Fi speed if you work online, and confirm how many stairs lead to the unit.
