There is nothing quite like waking up in my favorite neighborhood, Amapas, and feeling that first hint of the warm Puerto Vallarta sun. The air is always a little fresher up on the hillside, and the first thing on my mind is always something cold, sweet, and incredibly fresh. While I love a good coffee, the real magic of a morning here is found at the local fruit stalls.
If you are a solo traveler or even down here with the whole family, you have to experience the "jugo" culture. It is not just about a quick drink; it is a ritual. We have spent so many mornings wandering from our favorite condo rentals in puerto vallarta down into the heart of Old Town just to see what the morning harvest has brought in.
The colors alone are enough to wake you up! You see mountains of mangoes, bright pink dragonfruit, and giant green guanábanas just waiting to be turned into the best smoothie you have ever tasted. It is a world away from the bottled stuff you get back home, and honestly, once you try a real Mexican licuado, there is no going back.
The Morning Hub: Mercado Emiliano Zapata
Our first stop is almost always the Mercado Emiliano Zapata. It is the heart of the community in Old Town, and even though people sometimes call it Zona Romantica, it’s all the same wonderful place to us. The market is where the locals go, and that is exactly why we LOVE it.
Walking inside, the smell hits you first, a mix of fresh cilantro, earthy chilies, and the overwhelming sweetness of ripe pineapple. We usually head straight for the back where the "Jugos y Licuados" stands are lined up. These vendors are like artists. They have these heavy-duty silver blenders and citrus presses that have probably been in the family for decades.
I highly recommend starting with a jugo verde. Every stand has their own secret recipe, but it usually involves fresh-squeezed orange juice, pineapple, celery, parsley, and a big slice of nopal (cactus). It sounds intensely healthy, and it is, but it also tastes AMAZING. It is crisp, slightly tart, and the perfect way to hydrate after a long day in the sun.

Saturday Rituals at Olas Altas
If you are lucky enough to be here on a Saturday, you have to visit the Farmers Market at Olas Altas. It is just a short, beautiful walk from the quieter streets of Amapas. We always tell our friends that while there are many great puerto vallarta rental condos to choose from, staying in Amapas gives you the best of both worlds, peace and quiet at night, and easy access to the excitement of the markets during the day.
The Saturday market is where things get a bit more "exotic." This is where I first discovered the agua de jamaica (hibiscus tea) mixed with passionfruit. The deep red color of the hibiscus against the bright yellow of the passionfruit is so beautiful.
But best of all, you can find fruits you might not see in the everyday grocery store. Have you ever tried a mamey? It looks like a fuzzy brown football on the outside, but the inside is a deep, creamy orange that tastes like a mix of pumpkin, sweet potato, and almond. It makes the thickest, most delicious smoothie you can imagine. We often grab a couple of these to take back to our place and blend them up ourselves.
The Best Place to Stay for Fruit Lovers
I really can't emphasize enough how much we prefer the Amapas area for our stays. It is tucked just south of the main hustle of Old Town, giving you this elevated view of the town that is just so relaxing. When we are looking for the best spots to rent, we always point people toward Amapas.
It feels more residential and authentic, and since you are just a few blocks away from the main fruit hubs, you can stock your kitchen with all the tropical goodness you can find. There is nothing like having a huge bowl of sliced mango and lime waiting for you on your counter after a morning of exploring.

Street Side Gems and Local Secrets
While the big markets are great, some of my favorite finds have been at the tiny, one-person stands on the corners of Basilio Badillo or Venustiano Carranza. You will see these carts covered in colorful oilcloths, often with a handwritten sign listing the aguas frescas of the day.
One of my personal favorites is the agua de coco (coconut water). They usually have a pile of chilled green coconuts, and for just a few pesos, they will hack the top off with a machete and give you a straw. It is the purest taste of the tropics. If you ask nicely, they will even scoop out the soft coconut meat for you once you've finished the water.
We also love finding the vendors who sell "fruit cups." They pile a tall plastic cup with whatever is in season, cucumber, jícama, watermelon, and pineapple, and then they ask the golden question: "Con todo?" (With everything?). If you say yes, they will douse it in fresh lime juice, sea salt, and a generous shake of chili powder. It is the ultimate salty-sweet-spicy snack that just screams Puerto Vallarta.
Why We Keep Coming Back
Every time we visit, we discover something new. Maybe it’s a different blend of "jugo antigripal" (the flu-fighter juice with ginger and honey) or a new favorite vendor who remembers exactly how much chili we like on our mangoes. It is these small, personal connections that make a vacation feel like a second home.

Final Tips for Your Juice Tour
If you are heading out for your own fruit adventure, here are a couple of things to keep in mind:
- Go Early: The best fruit is often gone by noon, and the juice stands are at their freshest in the morning.
- Bring Small Change: While some larger vendors might take cards, the small street stalls are strictly cash-only.
- Ask for Recommendations: If you aren't sure what to try, just ask the vendor "Cual es su favorito?" (Which is your favorite?). They are always proud of their best blends!
- Stay in Amapas: Seriously, it is the best home base for anyone who wants to be close to the food but away from the noise.
The juice culture here is vibrant, healthy, and sooo delicious. We honestly can't imagine a morning without it. Whether you are grabbing a quick green juice on your way to the beach or sitting down for a creamy mamey licuado in the market, you are going to LOVE it. It is highly recommended for anyone who wants a true taste of Mexican life.
