Since we first moved to this beautiful corner of Mexico, our mornings have completely transformed. Back home, breakfast was usually a rushed cup of coffee and maybe a piece of toast if I was lucky. But in Puerto Vallarta, morning is the most important part of the day.
We LOVE waking up early here! There is something so special about watching the city come to life before the heat really sets in. If you are staying in the Amapas area or Old Town (which locals also call the Zona Romantica), you are right in the heart of the best morning food scene in the world.
Getting out of your condo and hitting the sidewalk is the best way to start your day. The smells of toasted corn, spicy birria, and fresh coffee are everywhere. It’s impossible to resist!
The Magic of the Amapas Morning
If you are looking for the absolute best experience, we always tell our friends that Amapas is the best place to rent. It sits just above Old Town, giving you incredible views and a bit of peace and quiet while still being a five-minute walk to all the action.
We usually start our walk from our place in Amapas and head down toward the cobblestones of the Zona Romantica. If you haven’t booked your stay yet, you should definitely check out the puerto vallarta rentals by owner available in this area. It makes such a difference when you have a local host who can tell you exactly where the hidden taco carts are hiding that morning!

Our Favorite Chilaquiles Secret
One of my first stops is often a tiny, unassuming spot on Lázaro Cárdenas. You might walk right past it if you aren’t looking, but the line of locals usually gives it away.
La Chilaquería operates in the mornings inside the Pancho’s Takos space. It’s simple, fast, and SOOO delicious. They serve red or green chilaquiles that are honestly the best we’ve ever had.
I usually get mine with a fried egg on top and plenty of crema. The crunch of the chips with the spicy salsa is the ultimate wake-up call. It’s a very casual vibe, which we love. You just grab a stool, order your plate, and soak in the energy of the neighborhood.
Searching for the Perfect Birria
If you are a solo traveller or part of a hungry couple, you HAVE to find the birria stands. Birria is a traditional slow-cooked meat stew that is a breakfast staple here.
In Old Town, you can usually find a great cart near the Farmacia Guadalajara. The smell will lead you there before you even see the steam rising from the pots. They serve the meat in tacos with a small cup of consomé (the broth) on the side for dipping.
But best of all, the people running these stands are some of the friendliest you will ever meet. We always make sure to express our gratitude because they work so hard to get these stalls set up before most of us are even out of bed.
The Tamale Lady and Fresh Juice
Some mornings, we don't want a heavy sit-down meal. That's when we look for the tamale vendors. They are usually perched on street corners with big silver pots.
The tamales here are amazing, fluffy corn masa filled with chicken, pork, or even sweet pineapple. We highly recommend trying a "rajas" tamale, which has strips of poblano pepper and cheese.
Pair your tamale with a fresh juice from one of the many stands nearby. You can get a "jugo verde" (green juice) with cactus, pineapple, and celery that makes you feel totally refreshed and ready for a day at the beach.

Why We Choose Apartments Over Hotels
We’ve stayed in many different places over the years, but we’ve found that staying in puerto vallarta apartments is the only way to go. Having your own kitchen means you can bring some of those fresh market finds back to your place.
Sometimes we grab a bag of fresh tortillas and some salsas from the street stands and have a second breakfast on our balcony. If you want to know more about how we plan our trips, you can read our guide to Market Mornings for more tips on local shopping.

The Breakfast Route through the Market
If you keep walking toward the river, you’ll find the municipal market area. This is truly a foodies paradise near your condo and a must-visit for anyone who loves authentic Mexican flavors.
The market has several "fondas" (small kitchen stalls) on the second floor where you can get a full breakfast of huevos rancheros or machaca. It’s loud, it’s busy, and it’s completely wonderful.
We love the cultural elements here, the bright colors of the fruit stalls, the sound of the tortilla machines, and the general buzz of a community that loves food as much as we do. It’s the real Puerto Vallarta.

Final Thoughts on Morning Rituals
Whether you are staying in a sleek condo in Amapas or a cozy spot in the heart of Old Town, make sure you don't sleep through the breakfast hour. The street stands are where the heart of this city lives.
Finding your favorite stand is like a treasure hunt. Sometimes the best ones don't even have a name; they just have a great cook and a loyal following.
Our best advice? Wear comfortable shoes, bring some pesos, and follow your nose. You will find something incredible every single time. We highly recommend taking a morning to just wander and eat!
