There is something absolutely magical about Puerto Vallarta when the sun starts to dip below the horizon. The heat of the day softens into a warm breeze, and the whole city seems to take a collective breath before waking up for the evening. For us, there is no better place to be during this transition than the Plaza de Armas, the main square right in the heart of the city.
We love walking down from our favorite hillside spots to join the local families and fellow travelers who gather here. The atmosphere is always buzzing, but in a relaxed, joyful way that makes you feel like you belong. But if we are being honest, while we love the music and the people-watching, we are really there for the snacks. Specifically, the churros and the street corn.
If you have never experienced the simple joy of standing in a historic plaza with a warm bag of churros in one hand and a cup of spicy corn in the other, you are missing out on one of the best parts of being here. It is a sensory experience that defines our evenings in PV, and it is something we highly recommend to anyone visiting.
The Heart of the City: Plaza de Armas
Before we get into the food (and believe me, there is a lot to say), we have to talk about the setting. Plaza de Armas is the soul of Old Town. Since Old Town and Zona Romantica are the same beautiful neighborhood, this square serves as the central meeting point for everyone.
The square is flanked by the stunning Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe with its iconic crown, and the municipal building. In the center sits a beautiful kiosk where musicians often play. As the lights come on, the square fills with children running around, couples dancing, and the irresistible aroma of street food.

We usually start our walk by just soaking it all in. There is a sense of community here that is hard to find anywhere else. But eventually, the smell of frying dough and toasted corn becomes impossible to ignore. That is when our real mission begins.
The Sweetest Crunch: Fresh Churros
You might think you know churros, but until you have had them fresh from a street cart in Mexico, you haven't really lived. The churro vendors in the main square are masters of their craft. You can hear the sizzle of the dough hitting the hot oil from a block away.
We always look for the cart with the longest line, that is how you know they are being made to order. Watching the vendor pipe the star-shaped dough into the bubbling oil is mesmerizing. They cook in seconds, turning a perfect golden brown before being tossed immediately into a large bin of cinnamon and sugar.

The first bite is always the best. It is incredibly crispy on the outside, but the inside remains light and almost airy. The sugar crunch is perfect, and the warmth of the cinnamon just makes you feel good inside. We usually get a large bag because, let’s be real, a small bag is never enough.
If you are a solo traveler or exploring with friends, these are the ultimate social snack. There is something about sharing a bag of warm churros that just sparks conversation and smiles. We’ve met so many interesting people just standing in line for these sweet treats!
The Savory Staple: Elotes and Esquites
Once we’ve had our sugar fix, it’s time for something savory. This is where the street corn comes in. In the square, you will see vendors selling two main types: Elotes and Esquites.
Elotes are the classic corn on the cob. They are usually boiled or grilled until tender and then skewered on a stick. But it’s the toppings that make them legendary. The vendor will slather the corn in a thick layer of creamy mayonnaise or Mexican crema, roll it in a mountain of crumbled cotija cheese, and then ask the most important question: "Chile?"
We always say yes! They usually have a few different levels of spice, from a mild powder to a fiery sauce. Add a squeeze of fresh lime, and you have a flavor explosion that is sweet, salty, creamy, and spicy all at once.

If you prefer something a little less messy, Esquites are the way to go. This is the same delicious corn, but cut off the cob and served in a cup. It is often simmered with butter, onions, and a traditional herb called epazote, which gives it a unique, earthy flavor.
We personally LOVE the esquites because you can get a bit of every topping in every single spoonful. It’s like a warm, savory corn salad that you can eat while you walk. It is sooooo satisfying and the perfect way to end a night of exploring.
Making the Most of Your Stay
After a night of indulging in the best street food the city has to offer, nothing beats a short walk back to a comfortable place to rest. While we love the energy of the main square, we always recommend staying a little bit further south in the Amapas area.
In our experience, Amapas is the best place to rent because you get the absolute best of both worlds. You are high enough on the hillside to get incredible views of the bay and the city lights, but you are still just a short, easy walk away from the Plaza de Armas and all the action of the Zona Romantica.
The condos in Amapas tend to be a bit quieter and offer that modern, stylish feel that we really appreciate. It’s nice to have a peaceful retreat after spending the evening in the bustling center of town. Plus, the walk back up the hill helps burn off at least a couple of those churros!
If you are looking for a place that feels like a true home away from home, we highly suggest checking out some of the apartaento de mi sueno. We have found that these properties often have a more personal touch and authentic Mexican decor that we just adore.
One of our absolute favorites for a romantic getaway or a small group trip is the Puerto Vallarta condos for rent by owner. It is exactly what it sounds like, a dream apartment that makes you feel like you are truly living the PV lifestyle.

We have spent so many hours on our balcony there, watching the fireworks over the church after our nightly snack run. It is those moments that make us fall in love with this city over and over again.
