Back in the day, you might see these hand-painted tiles covering every single inch of a kitchen.
It was beautiful, but it could feel a little heavy in a smaller condo.
Now, we are seeing it used as a stunning focal point, like a vibrant backsplash paired with modern quartz or granite countertops.
The contrast between the glossy, hand-painted patterns and the smooth, industrial surfaces is just SOOO good!
It gives the kitchen so much personality without making it feel dated.
We actually found ourselves spending more time in the kitchen just because the colors were so inviting.

We stayed in a place recently that felt like the apartaento de mi sueno because of the incredible Otomi pillows on the sofa.

When you put those on a simple grey or white sofa, the whole room just pops!
It feels very intentional and curated.
We also saw a lot of hand-woven rugs and throws that added so much texture to the rooms.
It makes the space feel warm and lived-in, which is exactly what we want when we’re on vacation.
But best of all, these pieces are often made by local artisans, so you feel that connection to the culture every time you sit down.

The bedrooms in Amapas are really where we felt the most relaxed.
A lot of the modern units are using these incredible hand-carved wooden headboards.
They have these intricate floral motifs that look like they belong in a historic villa, but they are paired with crisp, white linens and minimalist lighting.
The juxtaposition is AMAZING!!
It keeps the room feeling light and airy while still giving you that "I'm definitely in Mexico" feeling.
We found that the Amapas area has the best selection of these types of units.
It is tucked away just enough to be peaceful, but you are still so close to all the action in Old Town.
(And remember, Old Town and Zona Romantica are the same place, so don't get confused when you're looking at maps!)
If you're traveling as a couple, there are some truly romantic spots in the area that match this vibe perfectly.
The Little Details: Folk Art and Pottery
It is not just the big furniture that makes a difference.
The smaller decor items are what really tie the "modern Mexican" look together.
We saw so many beautiful Alebrijes: those brightly colored, fantastical wooden creatures: placed on sleek, floating shelves.
They add a playful, artistic energy to the room.
And the pottery!
Hand-thrown vases in deep blues and earthy terracottas look so sophisticated when they are grouped together in a modern built-in.
It doesn't feel like a museum; it feels like a home.
Patterns in Unexpected Places
Even the bathrooms are getting in on the action.
Instead of plain white tiles, many owners are adding bands of patterned cement tiles.
The geometric patterns are often based on traditional designs, but when done in black and white or muted tones, they look incredibly modern.
