We absolutely LOVE waking up early in Puerto Vallarta and heading straight to where the action is! If you are a solo traveler or even if you are here with your whole family, there is one place you just cannot miss. It is the Mercado Municipal Río Cuale, also known as the Municipal Market.
This place is the heartbeat of the city. We have spent so many mornings wandering through the aisles, and every single time, we find something new that makes us smile. It is so vibrant and full of life!
When you stay in one of our rentals, you are right in the middle of all this magic. Whether you are staying in Old Town or the Zona Romantica (which are actually the same wonderful neighborhood!), you are just a short walk away from the market.
Finding Your Way Like a Resident
The best way to get to the market is to take the scenic route. We always recommend walking through Isla Cuale. It is a little island in the middle of the river that separates downtown from the south side.
Walking across the hanging bridges and under the giant rubber trees makes you feel like you are in a hidden jungle. It is SOOO peaceful!
Once you cross the bridge, you will see the large, two-story building that houses the market. It is big, colorful, and smells like a mix of fresh spices and grilled food. It is AMAZING!
The Colors and Scents of the Ground Floor
The ground floor is where you will find the most incredible produce. We are talking about mangoes so sweet they taste like candy and avocados the size of your head! We always grab a bag of fresh fruit to take back to our condo.

But the real secret for locals is the spice section. You will see rows and rows of burlap sacks filled with dried chilies, cinnamon sticks, and hibiscus flowers (jamaica). The colors are so deep and beautiful.
We always buy a big bag of the dried hibiscus flowers to make fresh agua de jamaica at home. It is the most refreshing drink for a hot afternoon. Shopping for Authentic Treasures
If you keep walking, you will find the section with textiles and handicrafts. This is where you can find those beautiful hand-embroidered dresses and shirts. We LOVE the bright floral patterns!

You will also see rows of leather sandals, which we call huaraches. They are handmade and very comfortable for walking on the cobblestone streets. Just a little tip: if you see something you like, don't be afraid to talk to the vendors!
They are some of the friendliest people we have ever met. A simple "Buenos días" goes a long way. While they are happy to chat, remember that these are local artisans working hard, so we always treat them with the utmost respect.
The Secret Food Scene Upstairs
Now, here is the BEST part. Most people stay on the ground floor, but we are telling you right now: GO UPSTAIRS!
The second floor is home to the "fondas." These are small, family-run eateries that serve the most authentic food in the city. You will see locals, shop owners, and families sitting together on long benches.

You have to try the pozole or the fresh grilled fish. It is simple, hot, and so delicious. We usually look for the stall that has the most locals sitting at it, that is always a sign of the best quality!
Sitting upstairs also gives you a great view of the river and the trees. It is a much more relaxed vibe than the busy streets outside. We are so grateful for the hard-working women who run these kitchens; they make the best food in Puerto Vallarta!
Why Amapas is the Place to Be
After a long morning of exploring the market, nothing beats heading back to a beautiful, quiet space. While we love the energy of Old Town and the Zona Romantica, we honestly think Amapas is the best place to rent.
Amapas is just up the hill, so you get these incredible views of the lush green mountains. It is quiet, safe, and feels very exclusive while still being close to everything. Our condos there are designed with a modern aesthetic that makes you feel right at home.

If you are looking for your own apartaento de mi sueno [https://thepvgirl.com/opportunity], you should definitely look at our Amapas listings. We have worked hard to make sure every condo has everything you need for a perfect stay.
Choosing the right base for your vacation makes all the difference. When you look for Puerto Vallarta condos for rent by owner [https://thepvgirl.com/sueno], you are getting a personal touch that you just won't find anywhere else. We take pride in making sure our guests have the BEST time!
Practical Tips for Your Visit
Before you head out to the Municipal Market, here are a few things we have learned from our many visits:
- Cash is King: Most vendors do not take cards. Make sure you have plenty of pesos in small bills.
- Go Early: The market opens around 9 AM. It is much cooler and less crowded if you get there before 11 AM.
- Avoid Cruise Ship Days: If you can, check the cruise schedule. The market gets very busy when the big ships are in town.
- Take Your Time: Don't just rush through. Stop and look at the details, smell the spices, and enjoy the atmosphere.
We highly recommend spending at least one full morning at the Municipal Market during your trip. It is such a special experience that truly connects you with the local culture. You will leave with a full belly, some beautiful souvenirs, and a big smile on your face!
We can't wait to see you here in paradise. Puerto Vallarta is waiting for you!
