I have a bit of a confession to make: I am absolutely obsessed with Mexican textiles.
Every time I walk into a local market or a small artisan shop in Old Town, I find myself trailing my fingers over the intricate weaves of the rugs and wall hangings.
There is something so deeply grounding about owning a piece of art that was made entirely by hand, using techniques that have been passed down through generations.
Our condos in Puerto Vallarta are full of these treasures because they bring so much warmth and soul to a modern space.
If you have ever wondered why these rugs are so special, or how to pick the perfect one for your own home, let me tell you what I’ve learned from the incredible weavers I’ve met.
The Magic of the Pedal Loom
Most of the hand-woven rugs you see in this part of Mexico come from the Zapotec tradition, specifically from the village of Teotitlán del Valle in Oaxaca.
I remember the first time I saw a master weaver working on a massive wooden pedal loom.
It was like watching a complex dance.
The rhythm of the shuttle flying back and forth and the heavy thud of the foot pedals is something you never forget.

But the process starts long before the loom even begins to move.
The artisans start with raw wool, which they clean, card, and spin into yarn by hand.
But best of all, the colors they use are almost always from natural sources.
I was AMAZED to learn that the vibrant reds come from cochineal: a tiny insect that lives on nopal cacti!
They use indigo for those deep, moody blues and marigolds for the bright, sunny yellows.
It is a slow, beautiful process that makes every single rug completely unique.
Symbols That Tell a Story
When you look at a Zapotec rug, you aren't just looking at a pattern; you are looking at a story.
I used to just see pretty triangles and squares, but once a local weaver explained the meanings to me, I saw them in a whole new light.
The "greca" or stepped spiral is one of the most common symbols, and it represents the cycle of life: birth, youth, adulthood, and wisdom.

Then there is the "Ojo de Dios" or Eye of God, which is meant to offer protection and the power to see the unseen.
We love having these symbols in our living spaces because they add a layer of meaning that you just don't get with mass-produced decor.
If you are a solo traveler looking for a meaningful souvenir, a small rug with a protective symbol is the perfect choice!
How to Style Your Rug in a Modern Condo
A lot of people worry that a traditional Mexican rug will look too "cluttered" in a modern condo.
But I’ve found that the contrast between the organic, handmade texture and the sleek lines of modern furniture is actually BEAUTIFUL.
Here are a few tips from my own experience:
- Anchor the Space: Use a large rug to define your living area. Put the front legs of your sofa on the rug to tie everything together.
- Go Bold on the Walls: If you don't want to walk on your art, hang it! A vibrant rug makes an incredible statement piece above a bed or a sofa.
- Neutral Balance: If your rug is very colorful, keep your furniture and bedding neutral. A simple gray or white sofa lets the rug be the star of the show.

Why Amapas is the Best Place to Stay
I always tell my friends that if they want the best vacation experience, they should look at renting in Amapas.
Just so we are clear, Old Town and the Zona Romantica are the same place, and Amapas is tucked right at the edge of it.
It is my FAVORITE area because it is quiet and peaceful, but still only a short walk from the best shops and restaurants.
The architecture in Amapas is very modern, which provides the perfect backdrop for traditional Mexican decor.
I stayed in a condo called Sueño recently and the way they used hand-woven textiles against the polished concrete floors was just SOOO cool.
If you are trying to find the apartaento de mi sueno for your next trip, definitely check out the options in Amapas first.
Making the Most of Your Visit
There is so much to see and do here beyond the beach.
If it happens to rain during your stay, don't worry!

I am so grateful for the artisans who keep these traditions alive.
Every time I walk across my favorite rug, I am reminded of the hands that made it and the history it carries.
I highly recommend taking the time to visit a weaving workshop if you can.
It will change the way you look at your home decor forever!
