I will tell you a little secret, they are actually the same exact place!
It is the heart of the city where the cobblestones meet the sand.
We absolutely LOVE the energy here.
You can walk out of your door and find a taco stand in two minutes.
But if you really want to know my favorite place in the whole world, it is Amapas.
Amapas is just a tiny bit south, tucked into the hills.
In my opinion, it is the best place to rent because you get the quiet and the views, but you can still walk down into the action whenever you want.
Why We Always Choose Amapas

I remember the first time we stayed in Amapas.
The view from the balcony was sooooo beautiful it didn't even look real.
We sat there for hours just watching the birds fly over the jungle trees.
The peace you get up there is unmatched.
It is far enough away from the late-night music of the bars, but close enough that we never felt like we were missing out.
Plus, the condos in Amapas are just incredible.
They are usually very spacious and have huge windows that let in all that bright Mexican sun.

The Magic of Old Town (Zona Romantica)
Now, don't get me wrong, staying right in Old Town is a blast too.
The buildings are so colorful!
I love the pink flowers hanging off the balconies and the sound of the ocean just a block away.
Everything is so close.
We spent one morning just walking from our condo to a little bakery, then to the beach, and then back home for a nap.
It was so easy and stress-free.
When you rent directly from an owner in this area, you often get a place that is decorated with so much love.
Think hand-painted tiles and bright colors that make you smile the moment you wake up.
Specific Details That Matter
When I am looking for a place, I am very picky about three things: location, cleanliness, and safety.
The condos we have stayed in lately have been sparkling clean.
I’m talking about floors you could eat off of!
It makes such a big difference when you know the owner takes pride in their property.
Safety is also huge for me.
Most of these condos have great security or are in very friendly, well-lit areas.
I always feel totally comfortable walking back home after dinner.
And then there are the essential amenities to look for that really make the stay perfect.
For me, it’s a good kitchen and a comfortable bed.
Let's Talk About the Kitchen
One of the best things about renting a condo instead of a hotel is having a kitchen.
I am not saying you should cook every meal, you are on vacation!
But having a place to keep your beer cold and your fruit fresh is AMAZING.
We love going to the local market and buying giant mangoes and pineapples.
Cutting them up in your own kitchen while looking out at the ocean is such a vibe.
Most of these owners stock their kitchens with everything you need.
We found one place that even had a high-quality blender for making our own margaritas.
But best of all, you can make your coffee exactly how you like it in the morning.
A Bedroom with a View
There is nothing quite like waking up in a room that feels like a sanctuary.
In Amapas, we stayed in a bedroom where the whole wall was basically glass.
I woke up to the sun hitting the green leaves of the jungle outside.
The linens were so soft and high-quality.
I think I had the best sleep of my entire life there!
If you are a solo traveler, having a safe and cozy "home base" like this makes you feel so much more relaxed.
You aren't just a room number.
You are in a space that someone actually cares about.
Why This is Better Than a Hotel
I used to be a hotel person, but I am totally converted now.
In a condo, you have room to breathe.
You don't have to listen to people running down the hallway at 6 AM.
You have your own private balcony where you can just BE.
I love that I can leave my sandy flip-flops by the door and not worry about anyone moving them.
It is just more personal.
Owners often leave a little book with their favorite local restaurants and "secret" spots.
We followed a recommendation from one owner for a tiny taco place three blocks away, and it was the BEST meal of the trip!
Final Thoughts and Recommendations
If you are planning a trip, please do yourself a favor and look at these neighborhoods.
Old Town (also called Zona Romantica) is perfect if you want to be in the middle of everything.
But if you want that extra bit of magic, Amapas is where you want to be.
It is truly my favorite corner of the world.
The views, the quiet, and the beautiful condos make it so special.
I cannot wait to go back.
The people are so friendly, the food is incredible, and the feeling of having your own home in paradise is just unbeatable.

It makes every trip feel like a homecoming.
Finding a place to stay shouldn't be stressful.
Just look for those personal touches, a great view, and a location that makes you happy.
