Planning a trip to Puerto Vallarta for 2026 is such an exciting feeling. I’ve been spending so much time in the bay lately, and I can tell you that the energy for the upcoming year is already building up. Everyone is asking me the same question: should I book a hotel or look into puerto vallarta condo rentals?
It’s a big decision because where you sleep really sets the tone for your entire vacation. We’ve stayed in both over the years, and while hotels have their place, things are changing in PV. For 2026, the way we travel is shifting more toward wanting a "home base" rather than just a room.
If you are a solo traveler or coming down with your partner, you want to feel like you actually live here, even if it’s just for a week.
We’ve also put together two quick reads that help a ton when you’re choosing your base: Finding Your Perfect Vacation Home in Zona Romantica and Puerto Vallarta Digital Nomad 101.
The Space to Actually Breathe
The first thing I notice every time I walk into one of our condos is the space. You know that feeling when you check into a hotel and you have to play Tetris with your suitcases just to walk to the bathroom? I hate that.
In a condo, you get a real living room. You get a kitchen. You get a balcony that feels like an extra room. It makes such a difference when you aren’t sitting on your bed to watch TV or eat a snack.

I LOVE being able to spread out. We stayed in a place recently that had this amazing open kitchen with a colorful tiled backsplash and even a cool mural of the Vallarta church on the wall. It felt like a home, not a sterile box.
When you choose a condo rental in Puerto Vallarta, you’re getting a layout that lets us relax. We can have someone napping in the bedroom while someone else is making coffee in the kitchen without tripping over each other.
The Magic of the Kitchen
Let’s talk about food. I’m a huge fan of the PV food scene, but eating every single meal at a restaurant gets exhausting (and expensive) by day four.
In a hotel, you’re stuck with a tiny minibar that fits maybe two waters and a beer. In a condo, you have a full-sized fridge. We love hitting the local markets in the morning to grab fresh mangoes, avocados, and some local coffee.
Making breakfast and sitting on the balcony is my favorite part of the day. You can stay in your pajamas, listen to the birds, and watch the town wake up. You just can’t do that in a hotel lobby or a crowded breakfast buffet.
Plus, having a blender for fresh margaritas is a total game changer.
Why Amapas is the Absolute Best
When people ask me where to stay, I always tell them to look at the south side. Specifically, Amapas.
Amapas is nestled right above the main part of town. It is, in my opinion, the best place to rent in all of Puerto Vallarta. You are literally a five-minute walk from the beach and all the best restaurants, but you are tucked away enough that it’s quiet at night.

The views from the hills in Amapas are UNREAL. You get to see the whole curve of Banderas Bay. Most hotels are located in the Hotel Zone or the Marina, which are fine, but they feel like they could be anywhere in the world.
When you stay in Amapas or Old Town (Zona Romantica), you feel the soul of Mexico. You hear the bells of the church and see the orange tile roofs. It’s so much more authentic.
Privacy and Personal Touches
Hotels can feel a bit like a factory. You are just room number 402. In a condo, you usually deal with a host or a smaller management team that actually cares if you’re having a good time.
I really appreciate the little details you find in condos. I’ve seen wall clocks made from local driftwood and beautiful handmade furniture that tells a story.

The privacy is another huge win. You aren’t sharing an elevator with 20 people every time you want to go outside. You don't have to worry about a maid knocking on your door at 8:00 AM if you want to sleep in. It’s your space, on your terms.
What to Expect in 2026
For 2026, Puerto Vallarta is modernizing fast. Most of the condos now have blazing-fast fiber optic internet, which is great if you need to check a few emails or stream a movie.
We’ve also noticed that security is top-notch. Most buildings in Amapas and Old Town have 24/7 security guards who are incredibly friendly and helpful. They’ll help you call a taxi or give you directions to the best taco stand nearby.
One thing to keep in mind is the new tourist tax and local regulations that have kicked in. Staying in a managed condo means all that stuff is usually handled for you, so you don't have to worry about the paperwork.
The Cost Factor
While we aren't talking specific numbers today, the value you get from a condo is almost always better. When you factor in the ability to cook some meals, the extra bedrooms if you're traveling with friends, and the lack of "resort fees," your budget goes a lot further.
Hotels love to tack on extra charges for everything: bottled water, Wi-Fi, even using the gym. In a condo, what you see is usually what you get.
If you want a real “home base” in Amapas, Sueño and The Nest are both places we keep coming back to for that easy, lived-in feeling.
I’d start by checking Sueño if you want a calm setup that still keeps you close to everything.
And if you want something that feels cozy and private (but still walkable to the beach and restaurants), take a look at condo and apartment rentals puerto vallarta for The Nest.

I’ve found that even the "smaller" studios in the Amapas area feel sooo much nicer than a standard hotel suite because of the high ceilings and the massive windows that let all that beautiful Mexican sunlight in.
Making the Right Choice
If you want the "all-inclusive" experience where you never leave the property, a hotel is fine. But if you actually want to experience Puerto Vallarta, see the sights, eat the food, and feel the breeze on your own private balcony, then a condo is the only way to go.
We have spent so many nights sitting on a sofa, looking out at the ocean through floor-to-ceiling windows, and thinking, "I never want to leave." That’s a feeling you rarely get in a hotel room.
I highly recommend looking into condos in Amapas for your 2026 trip. It’s the best way to ensure your vacation feels like a true escape.
Make sure to book early, especially if you’re looking at the Amapas area. It fills up fast because it’s the sweet spot of the city. We are so grateful to everyone who has visited us and shared their love for this beautiful town. We can't wait to see you here in 2026!
