We spent a few afternoons just wandering through the shops in Old Town, which some people call Zona Romantica. Whatever name you use, it is the center of the city’s creative energy.

We got to see the potters and painters at work. Seeing an artisan carefully hand-paint a delicate pattern onto a raw piece of clay is truly AMAZING.

If you want to take your backsplash to the next level, I highly recommend looking into the work of local ceramic artists like Patricia Gawle.

We also took a lot of inspiration from the Tile Park (Parque de Azulejos) designed by Natasha Moraga. Her mosaic work is world-famous for a reason.

Installing the backsplash was a labor of love. We worked with a local contractor who understood how to handle handmade tiles.
Handmade tiles aren't perfectly square, which is exactly what makes them so beautiful. You need someone who appreciates the "wabi-sabi" of the material.
The final result was better than we ever imagined. The kitchen is now the brightest part of our home.
Every time we look at it, we remember the afternoon spent in the workshop and the friendly faces of the people who helped us create it.
