I still remember the first time I stepped off the plane and felt that warm, humid Puerto Vallarta air hit my face. It felt like a giant hug. If you have ever been here, you know exactly what I mean. If you haven't, oh man, you are in for such a treat!
We have spent so much time exploring every nook and cranny of this city, but we always find ourselves coming back to the same spot. The Romantic Zone, or Old Town as some call it, is truly the heart and soul of Vallarta. It is where the magic happens. It is where you find the best tacos, the coolest art, and the kind of energy that just makes you want to stay forever.
When we talk about staying here, we always tell people to look at Amapas. In my opinion, Amapas is the absolute BEST place to rent. It is tucked right at the edge of the Romantic Zone, giving you all the peace and quiet you want for a good night's sleep, but you are literally a five-minute walk from all the action. It is the perfect balance.
Why the Romantic Zone is My Happy Place
Walking through the streets of Old Town is an experience for all your senses. You have the smell of grilled corn on the cob (elote) on the street corners, the sound of waves crashing at Los Muertos beach, and the bright pink bougainvillea spilling over white stone walls. It is STUNNING.
The vibe here is just different. It is not like those big resort areas where everything feels the same. Here, every building has character. Every street has a story. We LOVE just wandering around without a plan. You might find a tiny gallery with incredible local paintings or a hidden coffee shop where the beans are roasted right in front of you.
Speaking of coffee, if you are looking for the best caffeine fix, you should definitely check out our guide on the best coffee shops in Vallarta. It will save you a lot of searching!

Finding the Perfect Spot to Crash
When you are looking for puerto vallarta old town condo rentals, you want something that feels like home. You don't want a sterile room; you want a place with a soul. We always recommend checking out this gorgeous spot called The Nest. It is right in the middle of everything but feels like your own private sanctuary.
Having a kitchen and a real living space changes everything. We love being able to go to the local market, grab some fresh tropical fruit and some locally made cheese, and just have a slow breakfast on the balcony while watching the city wake up.
If you are a solo traveler or a couple looking for something super cozy, this place we call Sueño is another top pick for condo rentals puerto vallarta mexico. It is so comfy and has everything you need to feel settled.
The Amapas Edge
I cannot stress this enough, staying in Amapas is a game changer. Most people just look at the main streets of the Romantic Zone, but Amapas sits just slightly elevated. This means you get these incredible views of Banderas Bay that will literally take your breath away.
Imagine sitting on your balcony with a cold drink, watching the sunset over the ocean. The colors are insane! Pinks, oranges, and deep purples every single night. And because you are just a tiny bit away from the main bar strip, it is much quieter. You get the best of both worlds.

What to Do During Your Stay
If it is your first time, you HAVE to walk the Malecón, but then make sure you head south across the Rio Cuale bridge. That is where the "real" Vallarta starts.
- Los Muertos Pier: It is iconic. Go there at night when it is all lit up. It looks like a giant glowing sail in the ocean.
- Basilio Badillo Street: This is the place for shopping and great restaurants. There is an art walk during the winter months that is so much fun.
- The Beach: Los Muertos beach is the most famous. It is busy, it is loud, and it is a total blast. Grab a chair, order some fish on a stick, and just people-watch for hours.
We actually wrote a whole post about how to pack for your PV trip so you don't forget the essentials. Trust me, you’ll want the right shoes for those cobblestones!
Living Like a Local
One of my favorite things to do is just "be" in the neighborhood. We love heading to the local fruit stands and trying things we can't get back home. Have you ever had a fresh mamey or a perfectly ripe mango from a street vendor? It is LIFE CHANGING.
The people here are so friendly too. Even if your Spanish is just "Hola" and "Gracias," everyone is so welcoming. It really feels like a community. We have met so many amazing people just by sitting at a sidewalk cafe for an hour.

Why Condo Living Beats Hotels
We used to stay in hotels, but honestly, we never went back once we tried condo rentals. Having your own space is just better. You have more room to spread out. You aren't constantly hearing doors slam in a hallway. Plus, having a fridge to keep your beers cold is a major plus!
The condos in the Romantic Zone and Amapas are usually designed with a lot of local flair. Think colorful tiles, beautiful wood furniture, and big windows that let in all that amazing Mexican sunshine. It feels much more authentic.

Safety and Getting Around
A lot of people ask if it is safe to walk around Old Town at night. In our experience, YES! We feel very safe here. The streets are always full of people, families, and travelers. It is a very walkable area. You don't even really need a car.
If you need to go further, the yellow taxis are everywhere and super easy to use. Or you can just hop on a local bus for a few pesos, it is an adventure in itself!
Final Thoughts
If you are planning a trip, please do yourself a favor and stay in the Romantic Zone. Specifically, look at Amapas. It is the vibe you are looking for, I promise. Whether you are coming to party, to relax, or to eat your weight in tacos, this is the place to be.
We honestly can't imagine staying anywhere else. The combination of the old-world charm and the modern comforts of the condos makes it the perfect vacation spot. It is just so special.
We highly recommend booking your stay early because the best spots in Amapas go FAST. People come back year after year, and it is easy to see why.
See you on the beach!
