I have spent plenty of time in Puerto Vallarta as both a traveler and a digital nomad, and I have learned that the best afternoons are not always the busiest ones. When my partner and I stay in Amapas, we like to put our phones away, close our laptops, and enjoy a few hours that belong only to us.
Amapas is the best place to rent in Puerto Vallarta for this kind of break. It gives us quiet hillside streets, tropical views, and easy access to Old Town, also known as Zona Romantica, when we want more energy.
The key is to plan a little before going offline. We save the basic route, bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and agree that we will not keep checking messages every few minutes.
Start by creating a simple offline plan
Before we leave the condo, we decide what kind of afternoon we want.
Sometimes we want the beach. Other days, we prefer a slow walk through the neighborhood, a café stop, and time to talk. We do not try to fit everything into one outing. The whole point is to move slowly.
Our usual plan takes about three to four hours:
- Walk through the quieter Amapas lanes.
- Head down toward Las Amapas Beach or Playa Los Muertos.
- Stop for a drink or a light meal.
- Browse a bookstore, gallery, or local shop.
- Walk back to our condo before we feel tired.
A paper note with the condo address, a little cash, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle make the afternoon much easier. If you are a digital nomad, finish urgent work before leaving and let your out-of-office message do its job.

Walk the hillside without rushing
Amapas is made for slow wandering.
The streets and stairways can be steep, so we do not treat the walk like a workout challenge. We stop when we want, notice the colorful walls, and look for small details such as hand-painted tiles, old wooden doors, iron balconies, and plants growing over garden walls.
This is one of my favorite ways to experience Puerto Vallarta because the neighborhood feels lived-in rather than staged. We often hear birds, passing conversations, and the sound of someone preparing food nearby.
Wear shoes with a good grip. Sandals may be fine on a flat street, but the hillside paths can include uneven stones and steps. I also recommend bringing water even if you plan to stay out for only an hour.
The best conversations often happen during this part of the afternoon. Without a screen between us, we talk about the food we want to try, the places we would return to, and what we have noticed during the trip.
Choose a beach with a slower pace
When we want to be near the water, we walk downhill toward Las Amapas Beach or continue toward Playa Los Muertos.
Las Amapas Beach feels smaller and quieter, with fewer formal services. It is a good choice if we want to sit together, read a few pages of a book, or listen to the water without turning the visit into a full activity.
Playa Los Muertos gives us more room to walk and people-watch. We usually leave our phones in the condo, but we bring a small bag with towels, water, and sunscreen. If we swim, we keep our belongings simple and stay aware of our surroundings.
I love that the beach does not require much planning. We can walk, sit, talk, and leave whenever we feel ready.
For couples who work online, this is also a useful boundary. A beach walk gives both people a clear break from emails and meetings. Even thirty minutes outside can make the rest of the day feel completely different.

Make a café stop without opening a laptop
A café can still be part of a screen-free afternoon. The difference is that we go there to enjoy the coffee and the atmosphere, not to work.
We like choosing a table where we can sit comfortably and talk. One person may bring a paperback while the other writes in a small notebook. Sometimes we simply share something cold to drink and watch the street.
A Page in the Sun is a natural stop if you enjoy books and a relaxed neighborhood setting. Puerto Café is another good option when you want to focus on the flavor and presentation of the coffee itself.
I always try to remember that cafés are working businesses, so we order something and avoid occupying a small table for too long during busy periods. A little courtesy goes a long way, and we are grateful to the local staff who make these places feel welcoming.
If you are traveling as a couple and one person still needs to check in with work, decide on a short window before you leave. For example, one person can take ten minutes to send an important message while the other enjoys a drink. Then both devices go away again.
Turn the afternoon into a small art walk
Puerto Vallarta has plenty of visual details to enjoy without a guide on your phone.
As we walk between Amapas and Old Town, we look for murals, sculptures, painted doors, ceramic details, and small galleries. We do not need to visit every shop. We simply browse the places that catch our attention.
Lázaro Cárdenas Park is a pleasant place to pause and look at its colorful mosaic work. Isla Cuale is another good option if we want greenery, craft stalls, and a change of scenery.
Our rule is simple: we choose one or two places and give them our full attention. That feels much better than rushing through a long list of attractions while taking photos of everything.
Sometimes we buy a small handmade item. Other times, we leave with nothing except a story about a piece we liked. Both outcomes are fine.
Share a small meal
By the middle of the afternoon, we are usually ready for something light.
A simple meal gives us another reason to sit together and slow down. We may share tacos, seafood, fruit, or a plate from a neighborhood café. Tuna Azul is a useful name to remember if seafood sounds good, while Basilio Badillo has many choices within walking distance of Amapas.
We prefer meals that do not require a long decision process. One person chooses the main dish, the other chooses the drink, and we try something we have not ordered before.
This is also when we talk about the rest of the trip. What did we enjoy? What felt rushed? What should we repeat tomorrow?
Those conversations are easy to miss when we are both looking at screens.
Make your condo part of the experience
A screen-free afternoon does not have to end when we return home.
A comfortable condo gives us a quiet place to continue the break. We might open the balcony doors, prepare fruit or a snack, and play cards at the table. Sometimes we sit on the sofa with a book and listen to the neighborhood.
Hummingbird has the kind of setting that makes it easy to pause after a walk. Vizcarra 1 is another option to consider when you want a comfortable base in Amapas while staying close to the beach and Old Town.

For digital nomads, I recommend making the boundary clear. Put the laptop inside a drawer or bag instead of leaving it open on the dining table. Turn off work notifications before you leave. If you need to work later, choose a specific time to begin again.
That small act helps the condo feel like a home rather than an office.
What we bring for a screen-free afternoon
Our short checklist is practical:
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Reusable water bottles
- Sunscreen and sunglasses
- A small towel for the beach
- A paperback or notebook
- A pen
- A paper note with the condo address
- A little room in the schedule
I also suggest telling your partner what you want from the afternoon. Maybe one of you wants quiet reading time while the other wants to walk. Knowing that in advance avoids frustration.
The best screen-free afternoons are not perfectly planned. They have enough structure to feel easy, but enough space for an unexpected café, a colorful doorway, or a conversation that lasts longer than expected.
My honest recommendation
Amapas gives couples a rare balance. We can walk downhill to the beach, browse the streets of Old Town, enjoy local food, and still return to a peaceful condo when we want quiet.
For digital nomads, that balance matters even more. Work can easily fill every open hour of a trip, but a few screen-free afternoons help us remember why we traveled in the first place.
If you want a calm, walkable base with modern comfort, local character, and easy access to the best parts of Puerto Vallarta, Amapas is highly recommended.
