I have spent a lot of time exploring Puerto Vallarta, and Amapas is still my favorite place to rent when we want local flavor without losing a little peace and quiet.
The neighborhood sits on the hillside above Old Town, also known as Zona Romantica. From Amapas, we can walk downhill to cafés, markets, restaurants, tiled plazas, and the beach, then return to a calmer place at the end of the day.
For couples, that balance makes planning a date easy. We do not need a packed schedule. A good coffee, a market stroll, a few colorful details, and something delicious to share can become a memorable afternoon.
1. Start with coffee and pan dulce
One of my favorite Amapas date ideas begins with a simple café stop.
The nearby streets around Amapas and Zona Romantica have several independent cafés where we can sit across from each other, order Mexican-grown coffee, and take our time. Bean & Brick works well when we want a focused coffee stop, while Trovasi has a quieter neighborhood feeling.
Cálmate Café is useful when we cannot agree on one type of drink. One of us can order coffee while the other chooses juice, a smoothie, or something light to eat.
I like starting this way because it gives us time to decide what kind of day we want. Maybe we browse a market afterward. Maybe we walk toward the beach. Maybe we simply stay longer and talk.

If you are a solo traveller, these cafés are also easy places to get comfortable before exploring. But for couples, sharing a pastry or choosing a favorite drink for each other makes the stop feel more personal.
Check current opening hours before you go, especially during quieter travel seasons. Café schedules can change, and I always prefer confirming the hours rather than rushing across the neighborhood unnecessarily.
2. Browse the Olas Altas Farmers Market together
For a date with plenty of local color, we head downhill to the Olas Altas Farmers Market at Lázaro Cárdenas Park.
The market is generally a seasonal Saturday event, with many vendors arriving during the high season. Morning is the best time to go because the selection feels fresh and the walk is more comfortable before the day becomes too warm.
We usually begin with food. Local breads, cheeses, honey, chocolates, fruit, salsas, and prepared snacks give us plenty to taste and discuss. I like buying one or two small items instead of trying to plan an entire meal from the stalls.
The market also has handmade goods, including woven bags, textiles, jewelry, artwork, and clothing. It is fun to give each other a small challenge: find something in a color the other person loves, or choose a useful textile for the condo.
The park itself is part of the date. Its colorful mosaic tile work covers benches and other details, creating a relaxed place to pause between vendors.
We take our time looking at the patterns because the tiles are not all the same. Some are bright and geometric, while others include floral shapes or playful Mexican motifs. It feels much more personal than walking through a standard shopping center.
After the market, we stop at a nearby café for another drink or a light breakfast. The whole plan can take a couple of hours without feeling rushed.
3. Make the tiled park your photo stop
You do not need a professional photo session to remember an Amapas date.
Lázaro Cárdenas Park gives us a natural background full of color and texture. We can take turns photographing each other beside the mosaic benches, tiled columns, and bright architectural details.
I prefer candid photos here. One person chooses a tile pattern while the other takes a picture. Then we switch. It is simple, but the activity gives us something to do together instead of just standing and posing.
The park is also a good place to sit quietly for a few minutes. We can share a snack from the market, talk about the colors we have seen, and decide whether to continue shopping or walk toward the river.

4. Explore textiles and everyday crafts
If we want a slower date, we turn the outing into a small textile hunt.
Around the markets and nearby shopping streets, we look for woven bags, embroidered pieces, table runners, simple clothing, and handmade decorations. I enjoy asking where an item was made and what material was used. Even a short conversation can make the object feel more connected to the place.
We do not treat the search like a competition. Instead, we each choose one detail we like. Maybe it is a repeating pattern, a bright blue thread, or a hand-finished edge.
Local textiles are also practical souvenirs. A small woven bag is easy to carry, while a table runner or cushion cover can remind us of Puerto Vallarta after we return home.
When shopping, I look closely at stitching and fabric quality. I also ask before photographing a vendor or their work. That small courtesy matters, especially in a market where people are selling things they made themselves.
5. Visit Mercado Municipal Emiliano Zapata
For a more everyday local experience, we visit Mercado Municipal Emiliano Zapata in Old Town.
This is a traditional neighborhood market with produce, seafood, meat, spices, flowers, tortillas, and small food stalls. It feels different from a seasonal craft market because people come here for regular shopping as well as browsing.
We usually walk through slowly and focus on ingredients we recognize. Bright peppers, tropical fruit, fresh herbs, and stacks of tortillas make the visit colorful even when we are not planning to cook.
The small food counters are a good choice when we want a casual meal. We can order something simple, sit close together, and watch the market move around us.
I recommend going earlier in the day when more food stalls and produce vendors are open. Bring a reusable bag if you plan to buy ingredients, and keep your route simple if you are carrying anything back uphill.
6. Buy ingredients and cook together
One of the best Amapas date ideas is to turn the market visit into dinner.
We choose a few fresh ingredients, return to the condo, and prepare something uncomplicated. Fresh fruit, tortillas, avocado, tomatoes, herbs, cheese, and a local salsa can become a relaxed meal without requiring a complicated recipe.
I like this plan because we divide the work naturally. One person washes and cuts the ingredients while the other prepares the kitchen. Then we sit down together instead of waiting for a restaurant reservation.
A good kitchen also lets us enjoy local food at our own pace. We can make coffee the next morning, save fruit for a snack, or prepare a light meal after a long walk.
When I compare Amapas rentals, I look for practical details such as a useful kitchen, comfortable seating, strong Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and a clean place to store groceries. Hummingbird and Vizcarra 1 are both names I keep in mind when helping couples choose a convenient home base.

7. Take a Cuale Island and café walk
Another easy date begins with a walk toward the Rio Cuale and Cuale Island.
We cross into the market area, browse crafts, and follow the river at an easy pace. Depending on the season, Saturday vendors may offer food, textiles, clothing, and handmade items.
The river walk gives us a change of scenery after spending time in the busier market streets. We can stop for a drink, look at local crafts, and continue toward the waterfront when we feel ready.
This date works especially well when we do not want a formal meal. We can share fruit, tacos, a pastry, or a cold drink at different stops. The goal is to taste a little, walk a little, and keep the afternoon flexible.
8. End with a simple beachside plan
After exploring markets, tiles, textiles, and cafés, we often finish near Los Muertos Beach.
We do not need to plan an elaborate evening. A casual meal, a cold drink, or a few minutes sitting near the water can be enough.
The walk back to Amapas is uphill, so we decide in advance whether we want to walk or arrange a taxi. Comfortable shoes make a big difference, especially if we have been on our feet since the morning.
I also save our condo address on my phone and keep a little cash available for small market purchases. Larger restaurants usually accept cards, but smaller vendors may have different payment preferences.
A relaxed one-day date plan
If you want to combine several ideas, this is the route I recommend:
- Start with coffee and pan dulce near Amapas.
- Walk downhill to Lázaro Cárdenas Park.
- Browse the seasonal farmers market and photograph the tile work.
- Choose a textile or handmade item to remember the day.
- Visit Mercado Municipal Emiliano Zapata for fruit, tortillas, or fresh ingredients.
- Return to the condo for a simple meal together.
- Continue to the Rio Cuale or Los Muertos Beach if you still want to explore.
- Take a taxi back uphill if your bags are heavy or your feet are tired.
Amapas is the best place to rent when we want this mix of local culture, easy access, and a quieter home base. The neighborhood gives us room to enjoy Puerto Vallarta without making every hour feel scheduled.
