We absolutely LOVE Puerto Vallarta. My friends always ask us where the real magic is hidden. They want to know where we go when we want to escape the usual tourist traps.
It is so easy to just stay on the Malecon all day. But there is so much more to see! We found the best spots by just walking and getting lost in the beautiful streets.
If you are a solo traveler or a couple looking for adventure, you need to dig deeper. You have to go where the locals go. We spent years exploring every corner of this city to find the true heart of Mexico.
Our favorite thing to do is wake up early. The city feels different before the crowds arrive. You can hear the birds and see the vendors setting up their stands.
We want to share our favorite secrets with you today. These are the places that make us smile every single time we visit.
The Magic of Old Town and the Zona Romantica
Old Town and the Zona Romantica are the same wonderful place. Some people call it one thing, and some call it the other. We just call it home.
The cobblestone streets here are so charming! We love the way the colorful flags dance in the wind above the roads. It feels like a movie set, but it is real life.
One of our favorite secrets is the Isla Cuale. It is a tiny island in the middle of the river. Most people walk right past the stairs that lead down to it.

We spent many afternoons walking under the giant trees there. It is much cooler and quieter than the beach. You can find local artists painting and selling their work.
There is even a small museum and a cat sanctuary! The cats are SOOO cute and well-loved by the community. We always stop to say hello to them.
If you want to stay in the middle of all this action, you should rent apartments puerto vallarta right in the heart of the neighborhood. It makes everything so much easier when you can just walk to your favorite coffee shop.
Walking through the Zona Romantica at night is AMAZING!! The lights from the restaurants spill onto the streets. You can hear music coming from every doorway.
Why Amapas is Actually the Best Place to Stay
We have stayed in many neighborhoods over the years. But we have a clear favorite. Amapas is definitely the best place to rent a condo!
It sits just above the Zona Romantica on the hillside. This means you get the most incredible views of the ocean. We love watching the boats come into the bay from our balcony.

Amapas is quieter than the lower streets. It feels more private and relaxed. You are still only a five-minute walk from the beach and the bars.
We found that the air feels fresher up there too. The hillside breeze is a lifesaver on hot afternoons. We often just sit and read while looking at the jungle trees.
If you are looking for the perfect spot, we suggest checking out puerto vallarta rentals by owner in this area. You get a much more personal experience than a big hotel.
The walk up the hill can be a little steep. But we think it is great exercise! It makes the view at the top feel even more earned.
You can find some of the most beautiful hidden gems of Amapas if you just explore the winding stairs between the buildings. Every turn reveals a new flowering vine or a glimpse of the blue water.
Our Top Food Secrets for Real Flavors
You cannot come to Puerto Vallarta and only eat at the big beach clubs. The real flavor is in the small stands and family-run spots!
We have a "taco rule" in our house. If there is a line of locals at a stand, we stop and eat there. This is how we found the best al pastor in the city.

The street food here is SOOO good and very safe to eat. We love the taco stands that open up late at night in Old Town. There is nothing better than a fresh taco after a night of dancing.
We also love the local bakeries. We wake up early just to get the warm pan dulce before it sells out. The smell of fresh bread on a cool morning is just AMAZING!!
One secret we tell everyone is to go to the Saturday Market. It is held at Lazaro Cardenas Park. You can find homemade salsas, organic coffee, and even artisanal jewelry.
We usually grab a fresh coconut and just wander through the stalls. It is the best way to spend a Saturday morning. You really get to experience Puerto Vallarta like a local when you shop where the residents shop.
Don't be afraid to try the fruit cups from the vendors on the street. They put lime and chili on everything! It is the perfect spicy and sweet snack for a hot day.
Hidden Views and Local Rituals
Everyone goes to the Los Muertos Pier for sunset. It is beautiful, but it gets very crowded. We prefer the secret viewpoints further up the hill.
We discovered the Faro de Matamoros lighthouse by accident. It is a bit of a hike, but the view is the best in the whole bay! We like to bring a couple of cold drinks and sit there as the sun goes down.

The sky turns incredible shades of pink and orange. It is so quiet up there. You can hear the bells of the Guadalupe Church ringing in the distance.
Another ritual we love is watching the fireworks. They happen almost every night from the Marigalante pirate ship. You don't need a ticket; you can see them from almost anywhere in the Zona Romantica.
We also enjoy the "Art Walk" on Wednesday nights. Many galleries open their doors and offer a glass of wine. It is a great way to meet local artists and see how creative this city really is.
The culture here is so vibrant and welcoming. We are always so grateful for the kindness of the people who live here. They make us feel like part of the family.
Planning Your Secret Getaway
If you are planning your first trip, keep it simple. Don't try to see everything in one day. Puerto Vallarta is a place where you should slow down.
We recommend staying for at least a week. This gives you time to find your own favorite taco stand or secret beach. We found that the longer we stay, the more we fall in love with the little details.
Make sure you bring comfortable walking shoes. The cobblestones are beautiful, but they can be tricky! We learned that the hard way during our first visit.
We are so happy we decided to start sharing these tips. This city has given us so many wonderful memories. We want you to have the same AMAZING experience that we have every single year.
Whether you are lounging in Amapas or eating tacos in the street, you are going to have a great time. Just remember to look beyond the main tourist spots. The real Puerto Vallarta is waiting for you just around the corner.
We highly recommend taking the time to explore the backstreets. You never know what hidden garden or tiny cafe you might find. It is those small discoveries that make a vacation truly special.
We would love to see your photos from your trip!
