I have spent so much time exploring every corner of Puerto Vallarta, and I finally found the spot that has my whole heart.
It is a neighborhood called Amapas, and let me tell you, it is absolutely AMAZING!!!!
If you are looking for that perfect mix of tropical jungle vibes and beach proximity, this is the place to be.
I remember the first time I walked up the winding cobblestone streets of Amapas and just stopped in my tracks.
The views of Banderas Bay from the hillside are so BEAUTIFUL they don't even look real.
Why Amapas is My Favorite Neighborhood
You might have heard of Old Town or the Zona Romantica, which are actually the same wonderful area.
I LOVE the energy of Old Town with its street tacos and busy bars, but Amapas is just a tiny bit south and feels like a whole different world.
It is tucked away on the hillside, so you get all the charm of the Zona Romantica but with a lot more peace and quiet.
In my opinion, Amapas is truly the best place to rent because you get the absolute best of both worlds.
You are just a five-minute walk from the best restaurants and nightlife, but you sleep in a quiet, lush paradise.
We always tell our friends that if they want to feel like they are living in a tropical dream, they have to stay here.
The Magic of Playa Amapas
One of the biggest secrets of this neighborhood is a tiny beach called Playa Amapas.
Most people stay at the main beach, Los Muertos, which is fun but can get very crowded and loud.
But if you know where to look, you can find a much more private escape.
At the very south end of Los Muertos, there is a giant rock formation called El Púlpito.
I found a set of stone stairs that lead right over the rocks and down into a hidden cove.
That cove is Playa Amapas, and it is so peaceful and secluded!
I spent an entire afternoon there just listening to the waves and watching the pelicans dive into the water.
It is definitely one of the hidden gems near your rental that you cannot miss.
The water there is clear and emerald green, and because it is protected by the rocks, it is usually much calmer for swimming.
Life on the Hillside
Living in Amapas means you are surrounded by lush green jungle and blooming flowers everywhere.
I LOVE walking out onto the balcony in the morning and hearing the tropical birds singing in the trees.
The architecture here is so colorful and traditional, with those classic red tile roofs and white walls.
Every time I walk down the hill toward the beach, I find a new little path or a beautiful garden to admire.
It feels very safe and welcoming, like a small village tucked into the mountains.
I have walked these streets at night many times and always felt completely comfortable.
If you are worried about the hills, don't be!
They are great exercise and the reward is always a stunning view of the ocean.
However, if you aren't feeling like a hike, taxis and Ubers are everywhere and very easy to use.
But really, walking through the neighborhood is part of the fun because you see so much more detail.
Planning Your Stay
When you are looking for Puerto Vallarta condo rentals, Amapas should be at the top of your list.
There are so many wonderful options that give you that authentic Mexican feel with all the modern comforts.
We stayed in a place recently that had floor-to-ceiling windows, and we could see the whales jumping in the bay right from our sofa!
It was SOOO cool to see them without even leaving the house.
One thing I have learned is that you really want to book early because the best spots in Amapas go fast.
People who discover this neighborhood once usually come back every single year.
It is also important to be aware of some common mistakes with condo rentals before you book your trip.
For example, always check to make sure your unit has good air conditioning, because even with the ocean breeze, it can get quite warm!
But once you are settled in, you will never want to leave your little piece of paradise.
Sunsets You Will Never Forget
The best part of every day in Amapas is definitely the sunset.
Since the neighborhood is built on a hill, almost every balcony has a front-row seat to the best show in town.
I like to grab a cold drink, sit outside, and watch the sky turn from bright blue to deep oranges and pinks.
It is so romantic and peaceful, and it's the perfect way to end a day of exploring.
The way the light hits the water in Banderas Bay is just breathtaking every single time.
I have taken hundreds of photos, but honestly, nothing compares to being there in person.
It makes all the travel and planning so worth it when you are sitting there watching the sun dip below the horizon.
Final Thoughts on Amapas
If you are a solo traveler or a couple looking for a getaway, Amapas is the place for you.
It has all the culture and excitement of Puerto Vallarta right at its doorstep but feels like a secret sanctuary.
I cannot recommend this neighborhood enough to anyone who wants a truly special vacation.
The people are friendly, the food nearby is delicious, and the views are the best in the whole city.
