I have spent so much time wandering the cobblestone streets of this city.
Every time I think I have seen it all, Puerto Vallarta surprises me with something new.
If you are a solo traveler or even coming down with your favorite person, you probably already know about the famous Malecón.
But there is so much more to this place than the big tourist statues and the main beach.
I want to share some of my personal favorites with you.
These are the spots that make me fall in love with the city over and over again.
When you look for puerto vallarta condo rentals, you want to be close to the magic.
And trust me, the magic is everywhere if you know where to look.
1. The Island in the Middle: Isla Cuale
Most people walk right over the bridges without thinking twice.
But underneath the busy streets of Old Town (which is the same thing as the Zona Romantica, by the way), there is a whole different world.
Isla Cuale is a literal island sitting in the middle of the Cuale River.
It is shaded by massive, ancient trees that keep things nice and cool even on the hottest days.
I love walking through here in the mornings.
You can find local artisans selling handmade crafts that aren't the usual mass-produced stuff.
There are even some quiet cafes where you can sit and watch the river flow by.
It feels like a secret garden right in the heart of the city.
It is one of Puerto Vallarta’s Best Kept Secrets: Where the Locals Actually Go and I highly recommend spending an hour just getting lost there.
2. The Hike to Colomitos
If you want to feel like an explorer, you have to do the hike to Colomitos.
You start in a little fishing village called Boca de Tomatlán.
From there, you follow a trail that hugs the coastline through the jungle.
It is not a super hard hike, but it makes you feel like you are a million miles away from everything.
The reward at the end is Colomitos beach.
It is a tiny, perfect cove with clear emerald water.
I usually bring a mask and snorkel because the fish there are SOOO colorful!!
It is the smallest beach in Mexico, and it is absolutely AMAZING.
Just make sure you go early to beat the small crowds.
Bringing a few snacks and a big bottle of water is a must.

3. Why Amapas is the Best Neighborhood
Everyone talks about staying in the center of town.
But if you want the best views and a little bit of peace, Amapas is the place to be.
In my experience, Amapas is the best place to rent in the whole city.
It sits just above the main hustle and bustle.
You get these incredible views of the bay that you just can't get anywhere else.
Plus, it is still just a short walk down the hill to all the action.
When searching for puerto vallarta old town condo rentals, I always tell my friends to look at Amapas first.
The air feels fresher up there, and the sunsets are just on another level.
I LOVE sitting on a balcony in Amapas with a cold drink as the sun goes down.
It is the perfect balance of being close to the fun but far enough away to actually relax.
If you want a truly great stay, Amapas is highly recommended.
4. Real Food at Mercado Municipal
I am a big believer that you haven't really visited a place until you eat where the locals eat.
The Mercado Municipal is located right at the edge of the Cuale River.
The bottom floor has all the souvenirs, but the top floor is where the magic happens.
There are rows of small kitchens called "fondas."
You can get a massive plate of authentic Mexican food for very little money.
I’m talking about fresh ceviche, spicy mole, and the best fish tacos you’ve ever had.
It is loud, it is busy, and it smells INCREDIBLE.
If you are looking for a Local Discovery: 5 Hidden Taco Stands, you should start your journey here.
The people working there are so friendly and always have a smile for you.
I always leave there feeling full and very happy.

5. The Heart of the City: Plaza de Armas
Most tourists stick to the beach side of the Malecón.
But if you turn inland just across from the arches, you’ll find Plaza de Armas.
This is the main square, and it is the heartbeat of the city.
On weekend nights, it turns into a huge party for the local families.
There is often live music, and you can see people of all ages out dancing.
It is so wholesome and fun to watch.
I love grabbing a churro from one of the nearby carts and just sitting on a bench.
You get to see the real Puerto Vallarta here.
The kids are running around, the old timers are gossiping, and the music is always playing.
It makes me feel so grateful to be part of this community.
Finding Your Own Secret Spot
The best part about Puerto Vallarta is that there is always something hidden around the corner.
Whether it is a tiny art gallery or a small beach you have to climb over rocks to reach.
Staying in a great spot makes a huge difference.
When you book one of our puerto vallarta condo rentals, you get a home base that feels comfortable and safe.
We take a lot of pride in making sure everything is clean and ready for you.
My favorite thing is walking into a place and seeing that view for the first time.
It never gets old!

The kitchens in these places are great too if you want to bring back some fresh ingredients from the market.
Having a slow morning with coffee while looking at the ocean is the BEST way to start the day.
If you are planning your next trip, don't just stay in a generic hotel.
Get into the neighborhoods and see what makes this city so special.
Old Town and Amapas are waiting for you!
I promise you will have the most AMAZING time.
Puerto Vallarta has a way of staying in your heart long after you leave.
I can't wait for you to experience it for yourself.

It is truly a special place with so much soul.
See you down here soon!
