Some people call it the Romantic Zone, and some call it the Zona Romántica, but let’s be clear: they are all the same amazing place.
It is the historic heart of the city.
When you walk through these streets, you feel the real Mexico.
The cobblestones are uneven, the buildings are bright white with red-tiled roofs, and there is a sense of energy that you just don't get in the newer parts of town.
For us, a vacation here is not just about a beach; it is about the feeling of being in a real neighborhood.

Why Amapas is the Best Place to Rent
While Old Town is great, we always tell our friends that Amapas is the absolute best place to stay.
It is tucked just slightly into the hills, right at the edge of the Romantic Zone.
You get the best of both worlds.
You are a five-minute walk from the sand and the bars, but you are high enough up to get those incredible views of Banderas Bay.
The breeze is better up there too.
Whenever we help people look for condo rentals, we always point them toward the hills of Amapas.
It feels more private and a bit more relaxed than being right on the noisy main drag.
We LOVE sitting on a balcony in Amapas with a morning coffee.
Watching the city wake up from that height is AMAZING.
The Soul of the Streets
Walking around Old Town is an experience for all your senses.
You smell the street tacos being grilled on the corners.
You hear the bells of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.
You see the colorful papel picado banners waving in the wind across the streets.
It is a very walkable area.
You can start your morning at the Malecon, which is the big oceanfront boardwalk.
It is about 2,500 feet of pure fun.
There are sculptures everywhere, and we always stop to take a photo of the "Boy on the Seahorse."
It is a classic.

You want a kitchen where you can keep your drinks cold and maybe whip up some guacamole after a trip to the local market.
We really prefer the feeling of coming "home" at the end of a beach day.

A municipal band plays, and you can watch people dancing the "danzón."

The Food Scene
Let's talk about the food, because it is incredible.
In Old Town, you can find everything.
You can have a five-course meal at a fancy spot or the best taco of your life on a street corner for almost nothing.
We love the street food.
There is a lady who sells tamales near the church that are just… WOW.
Having your own kitchen in a condo is great, but honestly, with so many good restaurants nearby, we usually only use our kitchen for breakfast and snacks.
The kitchens in these condos are usually fully equipped, which is super convenient for making a quick snack before heading out to dinner.
We always make sure to stock the fridge with local fruit and plenty of cold water.
Why We Love the Condo Life
Staying in a condo gives you a level of privacy you just can't get elsewhere.
You don't have to deal with crowded lobbies or noisy hallways.
In the Romantic Zone, most condo buildings are smaller and more intimate.
You get to know the security guards and the neighbors.
It makes you feel like you actually live there, even if it is just for a week.
We find the spaces are much brighter and airier too.
Having a big living room where you can just hang out and watch the sunset through the window is so relaxing.
Most of the places we recommend have great air conditioning too, which is a must during the warmer months.
Final Thoughts on Old Town
If you want a vacation that is full of culture, great food, and beautiful views, Old Town is the place to be.
It is the heart of the city for a reason.
Stay in Amapas for the best views, walk the Malecon every night, and eat as many tacos as you can find.
We have been coming here for years and we still find new things to love every single time.
The people are friendly, the weather is almost always perfect, and the vibe is unlike anywhere else in the world.
Puerto Vallarta is a special place, and the Romantic Zone is the best part of it.
