If I'm being totally honest, November and April are the sweet spots.
November kicks off the dry season. Temperatures sit in the mid-80s, and the rain has basically stopped. The tourist rush hasn't hit full force yet, so you're getting great weather without the insane crowds.
April is even better in some ways. It's the driest month of the entire year. Like, zero rain. Temperatures hit the high 80s, and the ocean is warm and calm.
Both months give you lower prices on flights and accommodations. You're not sacrificing anything weather-wise, but you're saving serious money compared to December through February.
I always tell my friends to aim for these months if they can swing it.
Peak Season (December–March): Is It Worth It?
Look, I get why people come during winter. The weather is consistently beautiful. Temperatures hover around 70–80°F, and you're basically guaranteed sunshine every day.
This is also prime whale-watching season. If you've never seen humpback whales breaching in Banderas Bay, it's absolutely worth experiencing at least once.
But here's the thing: everyone knows this is the best weather window. That means flights cost more, hotels fill up fast, and every restaurant in the Zona Romantica has a wait.
If you don't mind paying premium prices and navigating crowds, then go for it. The weather really is perfect.
Summer (June–August): For the Brave and Budget-Conscious
Summer is when it gets interesting.
August and September are the cheapest months to visit. Like, significantly cheaper. But there's a reason: it's hot, humid, and rainy.
Temperatures hit around 90°F with high humidity. Rain comes almost daily, but here's the secret, it's usually just quick afternoon storms. Mornings are often clear and gorgeous.

Fall (September–October): Quietest Time of Year
Late summer through October is when Puerto Vallarta feels like a secret local hideaway.
Tourist numbers drop significantly. You can walk down the Malecon without dodging crowds. Restaurants don't have waits. Beach chairs are always available.
The tradeoff? Heat and humidity are still intense, and you'll see rain most afternoons.
But if you want to experience PV without feeling like you're sharing it with thousands of other visitors, this is your window.
I actually love going out during this time because the whole vibe shifts. Everything feels more authentic and less performative.

You want to experience local life? September or October when tourists are scarce.

Where to Stay No Matter When You Visit
Regardless of when you come, stay in Old Town, Zona Romantica, or Amapas.
Amapas is my top recommendation. It's on the hillside just south of downtown, so you get incredible views and ocean breezes. You're close enough to walk to restaurants and beaches, but far enough away to avoid noise and chaos.
Old Town and Zona Romantica (same area, different names) are perfect if you want to be in the center of everything. Walkable to restaurants, bars, shops, and the beach.

But if you can only come in August? Great. December? Also great. May? Still great.
