If you have been following my journey for a while, you know that we absolutely LOVE the food in Puerto Vallarta.
But as a digital nomad, eating out for every single meal can get a bit much for the belly and the focus.
We have spent months living in various neighborhoods here, and my absolute favorite part of the day is heading to the local markets.
There is something so grounding about picking out your own ingredients and bringing them back to a beautiful kitchen.
If you are a solo traveler or a couple working remotely, cooking at home is the best way to feel like a real local.
The flavors here are unlike anything I have ever experienced back home!
The Magic of the Local Markets
When we first started looking at zona romantica puerto vallarta rentals, I knew I needed to be close to the action.
The Municipal Market, or Mercado Municipal Rio Cuale, is basically my second home.
It is located right where the river meets the ocean, and it is a total sensory overload in the BEST way possible.
You walk in and the smell of dried chiles and fresh cilantro just hits you.
It is AMAZING!!!!

We also spend a lot of time at the Emiliano Zapata market.
It feels a bit more "neighborhood" and less "touristy" than some of the other spots.
The vendors are so friendly and patient, even when my Spanish is a little bit rusty.
I am so grateful for the ladies who show me which tomatoes are the ripest for my morning salsa.
They really take the time to help you find exactly what you need.
Finding Your Flavor: The Spice Rack
If you really want to cook like a local, you have to get comfortable with the spices.
Mexican cuisine is so much more than just "spicy."
It is about depth, smoke, and a little bit of sweetness.
We always make sure to stock up on Achiote.
It comes in a little paste or as seeds, and it gives everything this gorgeous earthy, red color.
We use it on chicken and fish all the time, and it is SOOO good.
And don't even get me started on the cinnamon.
Mexican cinnamon, or canela, is softer and more delicate than the stuff you usually find in the States.
We put it in our coffee every single morning while we are getting our work done.
It makes the whole condo smell like a dream.
Why Amapas is the Best for Foodies
While we love the hustle of the Old Town (which is exactly the same as the Zona Romantica, by the way!), we always tell people that Amapas is the absolute best place to rent.
It is just a tiny bit up the hill, which means you get more space and much better kitchens.
When we are looking for rental properties in puerto vallarta, we prioritize a modern kitchen with a view.
There is nothing quite like chopping fresh mangoes while looking out over the mountains.

The condos in Amapas tend to have more updated appliances than the older spots in the center of town.
This is a game-changer if you are staying for a month or more.
You want a stove that actually works and a fridge that can hold all your market finds!
Plus, you are still only a five-minute walk from all the markets in the Zona Romantica.
It really is the best of both worlds.
Shopping Like a Local
If you are a digital nomad, you probably have a routine.
My routine always involves a morning walk to the market before I open my laptop.
Going early is the secret to getting the best seafood and the freshest herbs.
I highly recommend talking to the vendors!
Ask them how they use a specific pepper or what they recommend for a simple ceviche.
They are the real experts, and they LOVE sharing their culture with you.

One thing I learned early on is to bring my own reusable bags.
The markets are trying to reduce plastic, and it is just easier to carry everything back up to Amapas in a sturdy tote.
Also, always keep some small pesos on you.
While some bigger stalls might take cards, the spice vendors and the small produce stands are usually cash-only.
My Simple "Market to Table" Routine
We usually start with some fresh tortillas from the tortilleria on the corner.
Then we grab some avocados, a few different types of dried chiles, and some fresh white cheese.
Back at the condo, we toast the chiles on the comal (a flat griddle) until they are fragrant.
It fills the air with this smoky, spicy aroma that just screams "Mexico!"
Then we blend them up with some roasted garlic and tomatoes.
It is the best salsa you will ever have, I promise!

Embracing the Flavors of Vallarta
Living and working here has totally changed how I think about food.
It isn't just fuel anymore; it is an experience.
The colors, the smells, and the people at the markets make every day feel special.

If you are on the fence about staying in a condo versus a hotel, the kitchen alone makes the condo the winner.
Having the freedom to explore the local flavors on your own terms is priceless.
Puerto Vallarta has a way of getting under your skin, and the food is a huge part of that.
We are so lucky to call this place our part-time home.
Whether you are here for a week or a year, please go to the markets!
It is the heart and soul of this city.
I hope you have the most AMAZING time exploring and cooking in paradise!
