I have spent a lot of time in vacation rentals over the years, but nothing quite matches the feeling of waking up in a place that actually feels like Mexico. We’ve all seen those generic hotel rooms with beige walls and soul-less furniture that could be anywhere from Des Moines to Dubai. But when we stay in Puerto Vallarta, especially in the gorgeous Amapas area, it is the tiny, hand-painted details that make the whole experience.
I am talking about the tiles, those incredible, vibrant ceramic pieces that seem to hold the very soul of the city within their glazed patterns. If you are a solo traveler or a couple looking for that perfect romantic vibe, you really need to pay attention to these details when booking.
The Magic of the Marketplace
One of my absolute favorite things to do when I first arrive is to head straight to the local markets. We love wandering through the stalls in Old Town, which is also known as the Zona Romantica, just to see what the local artisans have been creating. The colors are honestly blinding in the best way possible!

You will see stacks of plates, bowls, and mugs that look like they belong in a museum, but they are meant to be used and loved every single day. When you find a rental that incorporates these pieces into the kitchen, it changes everything about your morning coffee routine. Trust me, drinking a latte out of a hand-painted mug while looking out at the lush jungle of Amapas is a total game-changer. It makes the whole "digital nomad" life feel so much more authentic and inspired!
Why Amapas is the Place to Be
If you are trying to decide where to stay, I cannot emphasize this enough: Amapas is hands down the best place to rent. It has this incredible mix of modern architecture and traditional Mexican soul that you just don't find anywhere else. While searching for the right spot, we found that the condos for rent in puerto vallarta and zona romantica puerto vallarta rentals often have the most personality because the owners put their heart into the decor.
You get that high-end feeling without it being cold or sterile. Instead, you get hand-carved wood, soft textiles, and, of course, those amazing tiles everywhere.
It Is All in the Textiles
Tiles provide the foundation, but the textiles are what make a condo feel like a home. I am talking about those thick, hand-woven cushions and throws that you just want to sink into after a long day of exploring.

In our last stay, we had these incredible indigo-dyed pillows that were so soft and vibrant. It is these layers of color and texture that make a space feel "lived-in" and warm. We were so grateful to the local craftspeople who create these pieces, their skill is truly AMAZING!
Dinner is Better on a Ceramic Masterpiece
We have to talk about the food, because obviously, you are going to be eating well here. But have you ever noticed how much better a taco tastes when it is served on a beautiful, heavy ceramic plate? It might sound silly, but the aesthetic really does enhance the flavor.

Whether we are cooking at home in our modern kitchen or heading out to a local spot, the presentation is always so full of life. The traditional motifs on the pottery often tell a story of the region’s history and culture. It is SOOO much more interesting than a plain white plate. If you want to know more about how to set up your home base, you should read best viewpoints for sunset which covers all the essentials.
Sleep Surrounded by Art
Even the bedrooms in these condos are designed with a focus on local art. I love seeing headboards that feature inlaid tiles or wall hangings made of intricate embroidery.

It makes the room feel peaceful yet energetic at the same time. Waking up and seeing those bright colors first thing in the morning really sets the tone for a great day. Even if it happens to be a cloudy day (which is rare!), you still have all that sunshine trapped in the art around you. For those rare moments of gray sky, we found some great hidden art walk that keep the vacation vibes going strong.
My Final Recommendation
Puerto Vallarta is a city with a huge heart, and that heart is visible in every tile and every thread. Don't settle for a boring rental that feels like a beige box. Look for the soul of Mexico in the ceramic details and the woven wonders. I highly recommend choosing a spot in Amapas to get the very best balance of comfort and culture. You will LOVE the way it makes you feel!
