The Best Place to Call Home
If you are looking to truly settle in, you have to choose the right spot. We always tell our friends that Amapas is the absolute BEST place to rent!
Amapas sits just above the hustle and bustle. You get these incredible views of the jungle and the ocean, but you are still just a short walk from everything.
It feels more private and quiet than the center of town. Plus, the condos there are modern and super comfortable.
When we stay in Amapas, we feel like we have our own little slice of paradise. It is the perfect balance of being close to the action but having a peaceful retreat to come home to.

People use the names interchangeably, so don't worry about which one you are in. It is the heart of the city and where most of the culture lives.
We LOVE wandering the cobblestone streets here. Every corner has a story, and every building is painted a different bright color.
But while Old Town is great for dinner and drinks, we still think sleeping in Amapas is the way to go. You get the best of both worlds that way!

Eating Like a Local
If you want to eat like a resident, you have to leave the Malecón behind for a bit. Don't get me wrong, the Malecón is fun, but the real food is where the locals go.
We highly recommend heading to the Rio Cuale market. It has been around since the 1950s and is packed with authentic flavors.
Go to the second floor and find the small food stalls called fondas. You can get a massive plate of food for a great price, and it tastes just like a home-cooked meal!
Our personal favorite is the street food in the Cinco de Diciembre neighborhood. Look for the busy taco stands where people are standing around eating.
If there is a line, it is usually AMAZING! Try the tacos al pastor or a shrimp burger. Your taste buds will thank you!
Another secret spot is the Versalles neighborhood. It is becoming a huge foodie hub. It isn't on the beach, so it stays much more local and quiet.
We go there when we want a break from the crowds and a really high-quality meal at a neighborhood price.
Master the Daily Routine
Residents don't rush. We start our mornings with a good coffee at a local cafe like Crema Vallarta.
It is the best way to wake up and watch the neighborhood come to life. You’ll see the shop owners sweeping their doorsteps and neighbors chatting.
We also walk almost everywhere. Puerto Vallarta is a very walkable city if you stay in the right areas.
If we need to go further, we hop on the local bus. It is cheap and gives you a real look at the city that you won't see from a taxi window!
Living here is all about the small rituals. Like watching the sunset every night. It never gets old, and every single one is different.

Hidden Gems and Activities
One of our favorite things to do on Wednesday nights is the Art Walk in Old Town. From October to June, the galleries stay open late.
It is such a cool community event. You can wander from gallery to gallery, meet the artists, and enjoy a glass of wine.
It feels so much more personal than a standard tour. You get to see the creative side of the city that most people miss.
We also suggest visiting the Malecon at night. It is vibrant and full of energy!
There are street performers, artists, and families out for a stroll. It is the best people-watching in the world, hands down!
If you want to get out of the city for a day, look into the hot springs at Nuevo Ixtlán. It is about an hour away and feels like a secret local paradise.
It is nothing like the big commercial water parks. It is just natural stone pools in the middle of the forest. SOOO relaxing!
Final Thoughts
We honestly believe that Puerto Vallarta is one of the most welcoming places on earth. If you treat it like your home, it will treat you like family.
Stick to the local spots, rent a great place in Amapas, and don't be afraid to try new things.
We highly recommend skipping the big resorts and finding a modern condo that lets you live the real PV life.
