I've been living in Puerto Vallarta for years now, and I've learned so many things that tourists just don't know about.
These aren't your typical "top 10 things to do" lists you see everywhere. These are real secrets that make my life here amazing: and they'll transform your vacation too.
1. Wednesday is Market Day in Old Town
Every Wednesday morning, a massive local market sets up near the church in Old Town. This is where locals actually shop.
You'll find fresh produce, handmade crafts, and street food for a fraction of what you'd pay in tourist areas. I go every single week.
2. The Best Breakfast Spot Opens at 7 AM
There's a tiny café called Cassandra's Café near Olas Altas that serves THE best chilaquiles and coffee in town.
Get there early. Locals pack this place by 8:30 AM, and they only have about 10 tables.
3. Amapas Has the Best Views: Period
I always tell people to look for rental property in puerto vallarta mexico up in Amapas if they want jaw-dropping ocean views.
This hillside neighborhood sits above Old Town and Zona Romantica. You get the best of both worlds: privacy and proximity to everything.
4. Skip the Touristy Beach Clubs
Instead, head to Playa Conchas Chinas just south of Los Muertos Beach.
Bring your own cooler and snacks. The rocky coves are perfect for snorkeling, and you won't be surrounded by loud music and overpriced margaritas.
5. The Malecon is Better at Sunrise
Everyone walks the Malecon at sunset, but I walk it at sunrise.
It's peaceful. The light is incredible for photos. And you'll see locals doing yoga and tai chi along the boardwalk.
6. Tuesday Night Jazz at La Bodeguita
Every Tuesday night, there's live jazz at La Bodeguita del Medio on the Malecon.
No cover charge. Just buy a drink and enjoy world-class music. It's one of my favorite weekly traditions.
7. The Bus System is Actually Great
Don't waste money on taxis everywhere. The local buses run constantly and cost about 10 pesos.
Just flag them down on the street. They'll take you anywhere in town, and it's a fun way to experience local life.
8. Mornings at Playa de los Muertos are Magic
This beach gets crowded by noon, but if you arrive by 8 AM, it's completely different.
The sand is pristine. The vendors aren't pushy yet. And you can actually find a good spot without fighting for it.
9. Hidden Beach Access Points Exist
There are secret staircases throughout Amapas and Conchas Chinas that lead directly down to secluded beach coves.
I'm not going to tell you exactly where they all are: that ruins the fun. But if you're staying in luxury condo rentals in these neighborhoods, ask your host. They'll know.
10. Street Tacos After 10 PM are the Best
The taco stands that set up late at night are where locals eat after going out.
My favorite is the one on Basilio Badillo near Mundo de Azulejos. The al pastor tacos are INSANE, and they're open until 3 AM.
11. Farmer's Market Saturdays in Old Town
Another market day: but this one's all organic produce and artisan goods.
It sets up in Lazaro Cardenas Park every Saturday morning. Perfect for stocking your puerto vallarta condo rental kitchen with fresh ingredients.
12. Free Salsa Lessons on Thursdays
Several bars in Zona Romantica offer free salsa lessons on Thursday nights.
They're actually good instruction too: not just a gimmick to sell drinks. Though the drinks are pretty good as well.
13. The South Side is Quieter
Everyone flocks to the north beaches, but the south side of PV (Conchas Chinas, Amapas, Mismaloya) is way more peaceful.
You still get gorgeous beaches and great restaurants, but without the massive cruise ship crowds.
14. Coffee at Página en Blanco
This bookshop café in Zona Romantica serves the best coffee in town: and I'm picky about my coffee.
They also have a great book selection in English and Spanish. I spend hours here writing and people-watching.
15. Sunset Timing Matters
Sunset is around 7:30-8:00 PM most of the year here.
But here's the secret: the best colors happen 15-20 minutes AFTER the sun goes down. That's when the sky turns pink and purple. Stay a little longer than everyone else.
16. Wednesday Night Art Walk
Every Wednesday evening from October through May, galleries in Zona Romantica and Old Town open their doors for free.
Free wine, free snacks, and you get to meet local artists. It's one of the coolest cultural experiences in PV.
17. Los Muertos Pier at Night
The pier gets all the attention during the day, but walking it at night is completely different.
The lights reflect on the water. It's romantic and peaceful. And there are usually street musicians playing.
18. Bring a Reusable Water Bottle
The tap water isn't drinkable, but most luxury condo rentals have filtered water dispensers.
Fill up a reusable bottle and take it with you everywhere. You'll save money and reduce plastic waste.
19. Restaurant Week Happens Twice a Year
In May and November, dozens of top restaurants offer prix fixe menus at huge discounts.
You can eat at places that normally cost $100+ per person for like $35. Mark your calendar.
20. The Real Magic is Slowing Down
This is my biggest secret: don't try to do everything.
Pick a neighborhood like Amapas where you can really settle in. Have lazy mornings with coffee on your balcony. Walk to the beach. Find your favorite taco stand.
That's when you fall in love with Puerto Vallarta.
