I have spent a lot of time walking through Puerto Vallarta’s neighborhoods, browsing local shops, and looking for the small details that make a trip feel personal. For couples and digital nomads staying in Amapas, handmade finds are one of the best ways to connect with the city.
Amapas is the best place to rent when you want quiet streets, tropical greenery, and quick access to the galleries, markets, and boutiques of Old Town. Old Town and Zona Romantica are the same area, and both are just downhill from the Amapas hillside.
What I love most is that shopping here does not feel like a rushed checklist. We can walk slowly, stop for coffee, talk with shop owners, and choose pieces that remind us of the trip long after we return home.
Start With the Textures Around You
The first thing we notice in Amapas is texture.
There are colorful walls, rough stone, patterned tile, woven chairs, carved wood, and leafy plants growing around traditional Mexican architecture. Even a short walk downhill feels visually rich.
For couples, I recommend taking your time instead of planning too many stops. Choose one or two streets, keep your bags light, and allow space for a shop or gallery that catches your eye.
For digital nomads, this is also a nice way to step away from a screen. A morning of focused work can easily become an afternoon of browsing handmade objects and photographing details for design inspiration.

Make the Saturday Market Part of Your Plans
If your visit lines up with market season, set aside a Saturday for the artisan markets around Lázaro Cárdenas Park and the Olas Altas area.
The market atmosphere is colorful and relaxed. We have seen embroidered clothing, handmade bags, jewelry, ceramics, artwork, and small decorative pieces. It is a good place to browse several types of local work in one walk.
The park itself adds to the experience. Its mosaic surfaces create a strong visual backdrop, and the surrounding streets make it easy to continue exploring after you finish at the stalls.
I suggest arriving late in the morning, before the warmest part of the day. Wear comfortable shoes, bring a reusable tote, and keep one hand free for anything you may want to carry.
Market schedules can change during the year, so I always recommend checking locally once you arrive.
Look for Hand-Painted Tile
Ceramic tile is one of my favorite souvenirs from Puerto Vallarta because it is colorful, useful, and easy to display.
Mundo de Azulejos in Zona Romantica is a practical stop for couples who like Mexican patterns. You can browse hand-painted designs for a small decorative piece, a coaster, a house number, or a future home project.
The best part is choosing together. One person may prefer bold blue and yellow patterns, while the other may like softer green, white, or terracotta tones. That small conversation often becomes part of the memory.
Before buying, check the back of the tile and ask how it was made. If you plan to place it in a kitchen or bathroom, ask about care and sealing. If it is only for decoration, wrapping it carefully in clothing can help protect it during the trip home.
Browse Talavera and Other Ceramics
Talavera Etc is another worthwhile stop for couples who appreciate pottery with a traditional Mexican feel. The selection includes decorative pieces and larger ceramics, so it is a good place to browse even if you are not ready to buy anything.
We like to look for details that show the hand of the maker: small variations in brushwork, uneven edges, and patterns that do not look exactly factory-made.
For a more varied experience, Mundo de Cristal offers glass and pottery in a setting that feels closer to a collection than a quick souvenir shop. It is a beautiful place to slow down and compare shapes, colors, and finishes.
If you are working remotely, take a photo of the pieces you like and note the shop name. That gives you time to think before committing, especially when you are trying to keep your luggage simple.
Find Wearable Textiles
Handmade textiles are practical gifts because they can become part of your everyday life.
At the Olas Altas markets, look for embroidered tops, woven bags, scarves, and other soft goods. Faith Colectiva on Basilio Badillo is another option for couples who prefer contemporary clothing and accessories from Mexican designers.
I always check the stitching, fabric weight, and care instructions. A textile should feel comfortable in your hands, not just look attractive on a display table.
For digital nomads, a woven pouch or small fabric bag can be especially useful. It can hold charging cables, a passport, or the small items that tend to disappear inside a work bag.
Ask before photographing a maker or a stall. A friendly “¿Puedo tomar una foto?” is a simple way to show respect, and many vendors appreciate the courtesy.

Visit Galleries for More Meaningful Pieces
Amapas and nearby Zona Romantica have many small galleries, which makes an afternoon gallery walk easy to plan.
La Colección is a good stop if you want to see handmade pieces alongside paintings. You may find ceramics, wood, papier-mâché, and other objects with more artistic character than a typical souvenir.
Galeria Olinala Folk Art is another place to explore traditional Mexican work in a gallery setting. For couples, it can be fun to choose one piece together and learn about the region, technique, or story behind it.
If you want to travel a little farther downhill, Tierra Huichol is known for colorful beadwork and yarn paintings. These pieces often contain detailed patterns and symbolism, so take time to ask questions rather than treating them as simple decoration.
Galeria Colectika and WATAKAME Flores Artesanías are also good options if indigenous art, carved figures, beadwork, and strong colors interest you.
Plan a Comfortable Shopping Walk
Amapas is hilly, so our best shopping days start with a realistic plan.
Walk downhill while you are fresh, and use a taxi or rideshare for the return if your bags become awkward. Comfortable shoes make a huge difference on cobblestones and sloped streets.
A simple route could look like this:
- Start in Amapas with coffee and a slow walk through the hillside streets.
- Continue downhill toward Basilio Badillo.
- Browse Faith Colectiva and nearby boutiques.
- Stop at a tile or pottery shop.
- Have lunch in Zona Romantica.
- Continue toward Lázaro Cárdenas Park or the Olas Altas area.
- Return to your condo before carrying delicate pieces any farther.
This pace works well for digital nomads because it leaves room for a work session before or after the outing. It also keeps the day enjoyable instead of turning it into a race between addresses.
Choose a Condo That Supports Your Finds
A comfortable place to stay makes these shopping days much easier. We appreciate having a kitchen, a table for sorting purchases, and enough space to let handmade textiles air out after being packed.
Amapas works especially well for couples because it gives us a calm place to return to while keeping the markets, galleries, restaurants, and beach within easy reach.
Hummingbird is a good option to review if you want a modern base for two adults. Vizcarra 1 is another property worth considering when you want to stay close to the Amapas experience while planning work and neighborhood walks around your own schedule.

Pack Handmade Items With Care
Before you leave a shop, ask the seller to wrap fragile pieces well. For ceramics, I prefer carrying them in the center of my luggage with clothing around every side.
Keep textiles dry and avoid placing heavy objects on top of them. If you buy a larger artwork, ask whether the gallery can arrange professional packing or shipping.
It also helps to measure the open space in your luggage before shopping. A beautiful piece is not very useful if it cannot travel safely.
When we bring something home, we like to keep the receipt and the maker’s information together. That small detail helps us remember where the object came from and makes it easier to find the artist again.
Why These Finds Feel Different
The best handmade purchases are not always the biggest or most expensive pieces. Sometimes it is a little bowl, a woven pouch, a painted tile, or a small ornament that brings back the feeling of walking through Amapas.
For couples, choosing an object together creates a shared memory. For digital nomads, it can also make a temporary condo feel more like home.
That is why I recommend looking beyond generic souvenirs. Pay attention to color, texture, workmanship, and the story behind the item. Talk with the maker when you can, and choose something that feels connected to the place.
