I have spent plenty of time working remotely from Puerto Vallarta, and I have learned that the right condo can make or break a workcation. A beautiful view is nice, but reliable Wi-Fi, a comfortable chair, and good air conditioning matter much more when you have meetings on your calendar.
For couples and digital nomads, Amapas is the best place to rent when you want a peaceful home base close to cafés, restaurants, local markets, and the energy of Zona Romántica. The neighborhood is hillside, green, and residential, so choosing the right amenities is especially important.
Here is exactly what I look for before booking.
1. Start with dependable Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is the first amenity I check. I do not rely on a listing simply saying “high-speed internet.” Before booking, I ask for the most recent speed-test results and confirm both download and upload speeds.
Download speed affects browsing, file transfers, and streaming. Upload speed matters just as much for video calls, sending large files, and backing up work.
I also ask where the router is located. A single router tucked behind a television may not provide a strong signal in the bedroom, kitchen, and outdoor seating area. A modern condo with good coverage throughout the unit is much easier to share when one person is on a video call and the other is working nearby.
If your work is important, ask these simple questions:
- What are the usual download and upload speeds?
- Is the connection fiber, cable, or another service?
- Does the Wi-Fi reach the bedroom and balcony?
- Is there a backup plan for a brief outage?
- Can the host help if the router needs to be restarted?
I also travel with a hotspot and a small power bank. I have not always needed them, but having a backup keeps a short interruption from becoming a stressful afternoon.

2. Look for a real workspace
A kitchen counter can work for an hour, but it is not my favorite place for a full workday. A proper desk gives me better posture, more room for notebooks, and a clear separation between work time and relaxation.
For a couple, two useful work areas are even better. One person may have a video meeting while the other answers emails, reads, or takes a call from another room.
When I look at listing photos, I check for:
- A desk with enough depth for a laptop and accessories
- A chair with back support
- A nearby power outlet
- Good lighting without glare on the screen
- Enough distance from the television and main living area
- A door or quiet corner for important calls
A desk beside a window can be pleasant, but direct light can make a screen difficult to read. Curtains or blinds are helpful, especially during bright parts of the day.
I also like an open living area with a comfortable sofa nearby. It lets one person work at the desk while the other takes a break without feeling boxed into a tiny room.
3. Choose a kitchen you will actually use
A full kitchen changes the rhythm of a workcation. I can make coffee before my first call, prepare a quick lunch between meetings, and keep snacks available without leaving the condo every few hours.
For two people, I look for more than a refrigerator and microwave. The most useful kitchen includes:
- A stove and oven
- A full-size refrigerator
- A coffee maker
- Basic cookware and sharp knives
- Plates, glasses, mugs, and utensils for two
- Enough counter space to prepare food
- A comfortable place to sit and eat
A breakfast bar can serve as a backup workspace, but I do not want it to be the only option. It is much better when the condo has both a dining area and a dedicated desk.
A kitchen also makes it easier to enjoy local ingredients. We can pick up fruit, vegetables, tortillas, coffee, and other essentials at nearby shops or markets, then prepare something simple at home. That saves time on busy workdays and gives us a more comfortable routine.

4. Treat air conditioning as essential
Puerto Vallarta can be hot and humid, so air conditioning is not an optional extra for me. It affects sleep, concentration, and how comfortable the condo feels during the middle of the day.
I check whether the unit has air conditioning in the main living area and bedroom. A ceiling fan is useful, but it does not replace effective cooling when the weather is warm.
I also look for information about the type of system. A mini-split unit can cool a room quickly, while a poorly placed unit may leave part of the condo warm. If the listing is unclear, I ask the host where the air conditioners are located and whether they are working properly.
Good curtains are another practical feature. They help control heat and glare while allowing the condo to stay bright when I want natural light.
For a workcation, quiet matters too. Air conditioning allows us to keep the windows closed during meetings when there is neighborhood activity outside. A condo that is comfortable and calm helps us finish work sooner and enjoy the rest of the day.
5. Do not overlook outdoor seating
A private balcony or terrace gives the workday a much-needed reset. I like to step outside with coffee, take a few minutes away from the screen, or read while my partner finishes a call.
The best outdoor space has two comfortable chairs and a small table. That sounds simple, but it makes a big difference. One chair is not enough for a couple, and a narrow ledge is not a real place to relax.
I look for:
- Two supportive chairs
- A small table for drinks or a laptop
- Shade during the brightest part of the day
- A usable floor area
- A door that closes securely
- Enough separation from neighboring units
I usually keep work equipment indoors unless the outdoor table is stable and shaded. Humidity, glare, and sudden weather can be hard on electronics.
Still, outdoor seating is one of my favorite amenities because it helps the condo feel larger. After a long call, sitting outside for ten minutes can make the day feel like a vacation again.

6. Check the location, not just the map
Amapas is close to many of the places we want to visit, but it is a hillside neighborhood. I always check the exact walking route, not just the distance shown on a map.
Ask yourself:
- Is the condo close to cafés and restaurants?
- How steep is the walk back home?
- Are there stairs inside the building?
- Is grocery shopping convenient?
- Can a taxi or rideshare reach the entrance?
- Is the bedroom away from the noisiest street?
- Will the location work for your daily routine?
For me, Amapas offers the right balance: a quieter residential setting with easy access to Zona Romántica, local food, galleries, cafés, and the beach area. It is close enough to enjoy the city but calm enough to focus.
If you plan to work several days in a row, I recommend choosing a condo where you can complete most daily tasks without arranging transportation every time. A nearby café is useful for a change of scenery, but your condo should still function as your main office.

My final Amapas workcation checklist
Before I book, I confirm these six details:
- Recent Wi-Fi speed information
- A proper desk and supportive chair
- A full, usable kitchen
- Air conditioning in the living and sleeping areas
- Two comfortable outdoor seats
- A practical location near everyday essentials
I also ask about stairs, noise, check-in support, and anything not clearly shown in the photos. A few questions before arrival can prevent many problems later.
For me, the best condo is not the one with the longest amenity list. It is the one that makes work easy, meals simple, sleep comfortable, and breaks enjoyable.
Amapas is highly recommended for couples and digital nomads who want a peaceful, well-connected base in Puerto Vallarta. Focus on the amenities you will use every day, and your workcation will feel much more relaxed.
