I have spent plenty of time exploring Puerto Vallarta’s cafés, galleries, and hillside neighborhoods, and I keep coming back to Amapas for one simple reason: it makes a coffee break feel like part of the adventure.
For couples and digital nomads, Amapas offers a great mix of quiet streets, colorful artwork, walkable cafés, and comfortable places to return to between outings. You can start with coffee, browse local art, answer a few emails, and still have time to wander through Zona Romantica.

Amapas sits on the hillside just south of Old Town. Old Town and Zona Romantica are the same area, so staying in Amapas keeps you close to the restaurants, galleries, beach access, and small shops that make this part of the city so enjoyable.
The neighborhood feels calmer than the busiest streets below. We can enjoy a slow coffee, talk without rushing, and then walk downhill into the heart of the action.
The streets are hilly, so comfortable shoes matter. I usually plan to walk down and take a taxi back up if we have spent several hours exploring. That small bit of planning makes the day much easier.

One of my favorite ways to begin an art-filled day is with a café that has more personality than a standard coffee counter.

If you are working remotely, I suggest treating this as a short focus session rather than a full workday. Answer a few messages, review your schedule, or write down your plans for the afternoon. Then close the laptop and enjoy the neighborhood together.
A café is much more enjoyable when one person is not buried in work for two hours.

Amapas and the surrounding streets are full of small visual discoveries.
You may see hand-painted tiles around a doorway, bright walls, carved wooden details, ceramic pieces outside a gallery, or a mural tucked behind a café counter. These details are easy to miss if you are rushing from one destination to another.

When we return to Amapas, I like having a kitchen where we can make another coffee, refill our water bottles, and prepare something simple. We can sit at a table, review photos, and decide whether we want to continue exploring or stay in for a while.

The Vallarta ArtWalk generally takes place on Wednesday evenings during the main art season, with galleries in Centro opening for visitors. The South Side Shuffle usually takes place on alternating Friday evenings during the busier months and focuses on galleries, jewelry shops, and boutiques around Zona Romantica.
If your visit falls outside the main season, do not assume the art scene disappears. Many galleries still operate during daytime hours, but individual opening times vary.
I recommend checking the current schedule on the day you plan to visit. It is also smart to carry a phone, water, and a small bag that leaves your hands free for browsing.
Give digital work a clear beginning and end
A coffee break can easily turn into a work session if you are traveling with a laptop.
We avoid that by deciding in advance what the break is for. If we need to work, we choose one short task, set a finish time, and stop when it is done.
For example, I may answer urgent messages while my partner looks through books or photographs nearby. After that, the laptop goes away and we continue the walk together.
If you need a longer work block, the rental is usually a better choice than a busy café. You have more control over the chair, temperature, noise, and internet connection.

When we have extra energy, we continue north toward Centro and the Malecón.
The walk brings more galleries, historic streets, public sculptures, and small shops into the day. The Malecón works especially well as an open-air art stop because the sculptures are easy to see while you walk at your own pace.
You do not have to visit every gallery. Choose the ones that catch your attention and give yourselves time to look properly.
I find that couples remember the places where they stopped to talk, not necessarily the number of galleries they visited.
Simple tips for a better coffee break

- Wear shoes with good grip for cobblestones and hills.
- Carry water, especially when moving between cafés and galleries.

For me, the ideal Amapas coffee break is not just about finding the perfect drink.
It is about the whole rhythm: walking through colorful streets, noticing local artwork, sharing a table, putting the laptop away, and having somewhere comfortable to return to afterward.
